Luck (2022)
Good fun for kids
While it's a bit light for adults, it has a good heart, and is clever. Aimed squarely at kids who might feel luck goes their way or not, it has decent characters and mythologizes a theme. I can see this sticking with younger viewers. Great voice acting, including the return of John Ratzenberger to animation.
The Godfather Part III (1990)
Coda better than theatrical release
The Coda director's cut is definitely better than I remember the theatrical release being. A few more minutes could have been cut, but it's a solid, exciting film with good tension. The acting excellent, apart from the miscast Sofia Coppola. She's an excellent director, but way out of her league amongst the power hitters around her. The big set pieces are solid, and the intimate moments, such as the confessional scene are beautiful. Well worth a rewatch.
Chauffeur (2018)
Funny, Dark Ride through San Francisco
Guillaume is a French driver stranded in San Francisco. Amy & Mike are a couple trying to feel their way through their 20s, unsure if they have a future together. Their paths cross, and the three stumble forward trying to figure out their lives.
In turns sweet, unsettling, dark, and hilarious. Directed with a slow, delicate touch by first-timer Derek DeRoche, and featuring honest, light performances. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Defending Your Life (1991)
One of my favorite movies
Amazingly sweet, thought provoking and funny. Albert Brooks plays an average person being judged in the afterlife. Should he be moved upwards or not? Being average, he's right at the cusp. The problem is, you can only go back to the world so many times before the universe says it's not worth it, and discards you—and he's almost out of lives. He meets the amazing Julia, played by Meryl Streep, and against all odds they fall in love. How will this affect his judgement?
This is one of my favorite films, and only after a dozen watchings do I wish there was more. Streep's character could be better rounded—she's a bit more icon than person. But you can't go wrong with this film.
