Mothers of Bedford (2011)
a hard look at mothering from prison
this is a provocative look at how many mothers there are in American prisons and their reality of parenting while incarcerated. this documentary focuses on several mothers and their children without pandering or placating. it is a truly objective commentary of the plight of convicted women and the trials and tribulations they face as mothers, and the issues their extended family experiences as caretakers of those children. it is both depressing and inspiring, and educates the audience about how the prison system works, especially how it handles inmates' responsibilities to their children. this is a film that is not only informative, but has altered the approach to supporting and educating mothers who are serving time.
one walks away from this film with more questions than answers.
