Why do we find murder mysteries so uniquely relaxing? This is one of the age-old questions about human nature, up there with ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘why do we keep eating mouldy cheese and fish eggs like it’s a good thing?’ Because, despite the grief and blood and mountains of paperwork that a gruesome murder causes, we simply can’t get enough of curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a cosy crime drama to keep us blissfully entertained all the way through to bedtime.
This isn’t a new thing, either: while modern series like Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway are the current champions of cosy crime TV, back in the eighties and nineties classics like Murder She Wrote and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates taught us how it’s done. So whether you’re after the latest in the cosy crime genre or some more nostalgic viewing,...

This show has been a fixture of UK television for a long time and, despite any fluctuations in the ratings, it's not going anywhere. We know it won't be cancelled right now since we already know that Russell T Davies has been hired as showrunner for season 14. Is Doctor Who sure to be renewed beyond next season? Stay tuned.
A BBC America science-fiction drama, the 13th season of the Doctor Who revival stars Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, an alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. The Doctor travels through time and space in the Tardis, which appears to be a British police box on the outside, with traveling companions Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill) and Dan Lewis (John Bishop). Jacob Anderson recurs. Guest stars in season 13 include Robert Bathurst, Thaddea Graham, Blake Harrison, Kevin McNally,...

When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.
As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

The Mezzotint is the latest instalment of the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas. The original series from 1971 to 1978 is justifiably considered a highlight of televised horror and its influence on later works is covered extensively in Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror. Since then, there have been sporadic attempts to revive the tradition, most recently by writer/director Mark Gatiss who has delivered seasonal shudders in 2013, 2018 and 2019, as well as this year.
Edward Williams is the curator of the Cambridge University Museum. He receives a mezzotint from a London art dealer as a potential addition to the Museum’s collection. He’s not impressed, deeming it a very ordinary picture of an estate house. But he becomes interested when a friend points out some features he somehow failed to notice,...

"You cannot play poker with a gangster without having some cards up one sleeve." Netflix has released an official trailer for Munich - The Edge of War, a German thriller shot mostly in English from filmmaker Christian Schwochow (who also directed the return-of-fascism film Je Suis Karl last year). This premiered at the 2021 London Film Festival this fall, but hasn't shown up anywhere else yet. In Autumn 1938, a British civil servant and a German diplomat cross paths in Munich and conspire to prevent war in Europe. The film's cast includes George MacKay as Legat, Jannis Niewöhner as Hartman, Jessica Brown Findlay, Robert Bathurst, August Diehl, Alex Jennings, Sandra Hüller, and Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons. “Watchmen” actor Jeremy Irons is headlining Netflix original film “Munich,” an adaptation of the bestselling 2017 novel by Robert Harris (“Fatherland”).
The film is set in the fall of 1938 when Europe stands on the brink of war. Adolf Hitler is preparing to invade Czechoslovakia and Neville Chamberlain’s government desperately seeks a peaceful solution. With the pressure building, British civil servant Hugh Legat and Paul von Hartmann, a German diplomat, travel to Munich for the emergency conference. As negotiations begin, the two old friends find themselves at the centre of a web of political subterfuge and very real danger.
Irons plays Chamberlain, while “1917” actor George McKay portrays Legat. The cast also includes Jannis Niehwöhner (“The Turncoat”), Liv Lisa Fries (“Babylon Berlin”), Erin Doherty (“The Crown”), Sandra Hüller (“Toni Erdmann”), August Diehl (“A Hidden Life”), Robert Bathurst (“Downton Abbey”), and Marc Limpach (“Bad Banks”). "I can solve anything in the world!" Atlas has revealed a new Us trailer for the upcoming American release of a comedy film titled Absolutely Anything. This film was originally released in Europe back in 2015, and has been waiting to get released in the Us until now. One way they're marketing it: this film features the "final" performance by Robin Williams, who voices a talking dog. Absolutely Anything is about a goofy school teacher who is granted the superpowered ability to make any wish or desire come true. Simon Pegg stars, with Kate Beckinsale, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Rob Riggle, Robert Bathurst, Eddie Izzard, and Joanna Lumley. This looks pretty bad, but the only redeeming side is that it's directed by Monty Python's Terry Jones. Maybe there's some good humor? It looks like this was lost in the 90s and only recently found. Here's the first official Us trailer (+ poster) for Terry Jones' Absolutely Anything,...

With the question of who's playing James Bond in James Bond 25 unresolved, we look back at the casting conundrums 007 has faced before.
Since 1962, fewer men have played James Bond than have walked on the moon. Despite the relatively long turnaround of the role, the subject of who might follow in the footsteps of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in the future has fuelled many column inches and tabloid splashes.
It feels as if speculation about the seventh 007 in Eon Productions' long-lived spy franchise has been at fever pitch since this time last year, when Craig was doing the promotional rounds for Spectre and commented that he would rather “slash [his] wrists” than play Bond again. It's only after a year of constant reports on the subject that his far more optimistic comments at last weekend's New Yorker Festival...

There is something very likable about Matt Berry, and it’s not just his awesome voice. The fact that we see him in many British comedies shows just how talented he is, and with Toast of London: Series Three we see him at his best.
It would be easy to believe that Steven Toast is Matt Berry, the character feels like the ones we’ve seen him play before. In Toast of London though we see him sending up the stereotypical “Luvvies” acting community that we usually see haunting the streets of London looking for their next job.
Each episode of the show typically sees Toast being given a job by his “old school” agent Jane Plough (Doon Mackichan) and given some bad advice by his housemate Ed Howzer-Black (Robert Bathurst). What makes Toast of London interesting though is not only the outlandish characters that we meet, but also...

James Nesbitt, Robert Bathurst, Hermione Norris, John Thomson, and Fay Ripley will return for more episodes of Cold Feet next year…
Here’s an unexpected one. ITV is bringing back its BAFTA-winning Cold Feet. New episodes will go into production in January 2016.
Series creator Mike Bullen has conceived the new episodes, and will write and executive produce for the new series. Stars James Nesbitt, Robert Bathurst, Hermione Norris, John Thomson, and Fay Ripley are all reuniting on the screen.
Here’s a synopsis, from the official press bumf:
“It’s been 13 years since Rachel’s untimely death. How has Adam coped without his soulmate, raising their son on his own? Do Pete and Jenny still spend their evenings on the sofa, except now they watch Endeavour instead of Morse? And what of David and Karen? They’d split up, but with three children between them, are the ties that bind still strong?...

The rumours weren't greatly exaggerated - Cold Feet will return to our screens in 2016.
Fay Ripley has confirmed a new series of the ITV comedy-drama, which followed the lives of three couples going through the highs and lows of romance and friendship.
Cold Feet: Where are the cast of ITV's hit series now?
"I think we're off and away, I think we can say that," Ripley told The Mirror. "My only hesitation is that one hopes it's not going to be rubbish."
Back in August, rumours increased about a potential return for the show as stars James Nesbitt, Hermione Norris and John Thomson were thought to be in talks.
Ripley admits to having no idea where the new series will find the characters, but joked that she hopes it hasn't been written that her character has "got very thin".
"Ten years have passed, anything could have happened," she explained.

Is ITV really going to bring back Cold Feet?
That's the rumour, with the broadcaster apparently looking to plug the Downton-shaped hole in its schedule with a revival of the popular comedy-drama.
If it's true, they'll have a job bringing the cast back together - some have gone on to be huge telly and film stars, while others have stepped out of the spotlight entirely...

Nesbitt's carefree lothario Adam Williams met his match in Helen Baxendale's Rachel - the couple overcame infidelity and infertility but were denied lasting happiness when Rachel was killed in a traffic accident.
Since Cold Feet wrapped, Nesbitt has become one of British television's most in-demand leading men.
He fronted BBC One's gritty cop series Murphy's Law from 2003-07, led Steven Moffat's supernatural thriller Jekyll - also in 2007 - and played the title character in ITV's short-lived medical drama Monroe (2011-12).

It's been more than 10 years since Cold Feet left our screens, but ITV could be about to revive the show for a new series.
The cast of the hit comedy drama, including James Nesbitt, Hermione Norris and John Thomson, are all thought to be in talks with the channel about reprising their roles.
Fay Ripley and Robert Bathurst are also tipped to return should the revival be given the green light, according to The Mirror.
Rumours of a potential reunion series surfaced in July, but it is now looking ever more likely that ITV will bring the series back in its traditional Sunday night slot, filling the void that will be left when Downton Abbey concludes later this year.
However, if the show does return, fans shouldn't expect to see it on screens before autumn 2016.

Here's some cheering news for comedy fans: Matt Berry's ace, critically acclaimed sitcom Toast Of London is returning to Channel 4 for a third run.
The series, which has been an awards magnet since its one-off debut episode arrived as part of Channel 4's Funny Fortnight in 2012, follows the adventures of actor Stephen Toast (Berry) and co-stars Doon Mackichan, Robert Bathurst, Tracy-Ann Oberman and Harry Peacock.
Toast Of London recently concluded its second series on Channel 4, with its first episode having drawn a consolidated audience of 582k, rising to over 1 milllion with the addition of the Friday night repeat. Those numbers and a heap of goodwill obviously made Channel 4's decision for them, and hooray for that.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

Sky1 has debuted the first trailer for its Christmas drama Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death.
Ashley Jensen leads the cast of the special, which also features Hermione Norris, Mathew Horne, Robert Bathurst, Katy Wix and Jamie Glover.
Agatha Raisin is described as "contemporary and quirky", and is based on the Mc Beaton novel series.
It follows Agatha (Jensen), a PR whizz who gives up her life in London to move to the seemingly tranquil village of Carsley, but soon finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery.
She inadvertently becomes a suspect in the murder case when she enters the village's annual quiche-making competition. She sets out to clear her name and solve the murder mystery once and for all.
Describing her character, Jensen said: "Agatha Raisin is a strong, forthright, independent, driven, successful woman, who is both funny and flawed - a real woman of our time."...

Should you be watching Matt Berry comedy show Toast Of London on Channel 4? In the words of Stephen Toast... Yes!
Did you know that musical star Michael Ball has double the amount of blood in his body as that of the average human? It's what allows him to belt out those big notes.
If you watched Series 1 of Toast Of London then you'll already know that's true.
But if you didn't know and didn't watch, then that's entirely not your fault. After a strong pilot, Channel 4 took the first series of Matt Berry and Arthur Matthews' comedy about failing actor Steven Toast (Berry) and buried it in the late hour soil of Sunday nights, in a time slot so obscure you'd need a TV guide, compass, shovel, and remote to find it.
Fortunately the Rose D'Or committee still managed to unearth it on 4Od - no doubt...

Toast of London
The brainchild of Matt Berry and Father Ted co-creator Arthur Matthews, Toast of London largely flew under the radar when it aired on Channel 4 last autumn. With the second series soon upon us, there's no better time than now to take a look back at the funniest sitcom you've probably never heard of.
Berry, a veteran of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and The It Crowd, takes on the lead role of Steven Toast, a British thespian whose best days are long behind him. A vain and egotistical actor, he's at rock bottom thanks to a divorce (Amanda Donohue crops up as his ex-wife) and a starring role in a play that's so offensive the public want to see him dead.

Despite our best efforts, we just never warmed up to NBC's adaptation of "Dracula" starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and apparently neither did the network's decision-makers because it was announced earlier today that it will not be returning for a second season.
Along with Meyers, the show's other cast members, all of whom fared a bit better in their roles, included Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Jonathan Harker, Jessica De Gouw as Mina Murray/Ilona, Thomas Kretschmann as Abraham Van Helsing, Katie McGrath as Lucy Westenra, Nonso Anozie as R.M. Renfield, Victoria Smurfit as Lady Jayne Wetherby, Ben Miles as Mr. Browning, and Robert Bathurst as Lord Thomas Davenport.
With the announcement that "Constantine" received a series order just a few days ago, we wouldn't be surprised to see it fill Drac's coffin... er... time slot. Stay tuned for an announcement of NBC's full schedule soon.

There's been no official word yet as to whether or not the show is getting a second season, but from the series' creators' comments, they definitely have some ideas of where to take the story. We'll keep you posted.

"Dracula" won't be home for the holidays; instead we have to wait until the new year for a new episode. So in the meantime let's "unearth" last night's Ep. 1.06, "Of Monsters and Men," and take a peek at the promo for January's Ep. 1.07, "Servant to Two Masters."
Per usual, in the "Unearthed" video the cast and creators take us behind the scenes, and below that is a bonus highlight: "Here Comes the Sun," in which Grayson utilizes Van Helsing's experimental sunlight serum to throw suspicious enemies off his path, but the serum's effects are only temporary.
