The 8G Band will be playing its last tunes on Late Night With Seth Meyers this summer.
NBC-imposed budget cuts to the show mean that the house band — keyboard player Eli Janney, guitarist Seth Jabour and bassist Syd Butler — will be going away when Late Night begins its new season in the fall. The trio have been part of the show since its debut in 2014; Fred Armisen was the bandleader for much of that time but has been more of a guest performer in the past few years.
“Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker, the showrunner, brought us in in person to talk about it. They expressed their regret and frustration about it,” Janney said in an interview with Vulture. “They had been trying to work it out for months, but in the end NBC was adamant about where they wanted the budget to go. “Late Night with Seth Meyers” will no longer feature a live band, which doesn’t bode well for “It’s Time to Ask Fred (Armisen) a Question.”
Meyers’ version of “Late Night” succeeded Jimmy Fallon’s back in 2014. Fallon’s house band The Roots followed him to “The Tonight Show,” so Meyers assembled the 8G Band, led by fellow “SNL” alum Fred Armisen. At first, Armisen was the regular drummer; he later only appeared for a week here and there due to his own busy schedule. The 8G Band’s guitarist Seth Jabour, bassist Syd Butler, and keyboardist Eli Janney were nightly staples. Armisen is still technically the bandleader.
IndieWire has confirmed that come Season 12, debuting in September 2024, the 8G Band will no longer be part of the show. The band is exiting due to budgetary reasons.
Vulture first reported the news in an interview published with “Late Night” associate musical director and keyboardist Janney.

NBC last month renewed Late Night With Seth Meyers and re-upped its host through 2028. But when Late Night returns next fall for its 12th season with Meyers, it will be without a house band for the first time in the show’s 44 year history.
The 8G Band, led by Saturday Night Live alum Fred Armisen, has been laid off as live music will no longer be a permanent feature on the show going forward, Deadline has confirmed. The decision, believed to be a cost-saving measure, was revealed by band member Eli Janney — who is also the associate musical director on the show — in an interview with Vulture.
“Sadly, it’s the reality of broadcast and a shrinking market — streaming eating into this, and YouTube eating into that,” he said. “Streaming is not making money, either. So budgets everywhere have been cut and cut and cut. I liken it to a Spotify moment in music,...

NBC isn’t cutting “Late Night” off the network’s regular schedule, but it is going to cut the show’s budget.
The 8G Band, a signature element of the Seth Meyers-led program since it launched in 2014, will stop appearing on the after-hours NBC show, commencing in the fall. Eli Janney, the combo’s keyboardist, told Vulture Tuesday that the trio was informed in recent weeks that the band would cease to be a regular part of the program due to budget cuts.
“In the end, NBC was adamant about where they wanted the budget to go,” Janney told the entertainment-news site. “It’s not just the band; there’s a whole crew that works with the band, so there’s a lot of people employed. I think this was an easy way for them to cut the budget. Easy is not the right word.”

Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang have had very different “Saturday Night Live” trajectories. And yet, they both have made history. Thompson, who joined the show in 2003, is the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history. When Yang joined, first as a writer in 2018 then moving to the cast the following year, he became the first Chinese American “SNL” player.
Despite joining the show 15 years apart, they adapted in a similar way: by listening.
Thirty years ago, Thompson was on the premiere of “All That,” the kids’ version of “SNL” that aired on Nickelodeon in the 1990s. “To have Kenan be at the show now is only a sign that he has the foresight, fortitude and forbearance to just be a pure master at this,” says Yang. He turned to his co-star: “I don’t take it for granted that I sit next to you at read-through. I absorb so much just being in proximity.

Every parent knows there are generally two kinds of animated features: the ones that put in the extra work to appeal to an audience of all ages and the ones that don’t aspire to entertain anyone but the easy-to-please under-12 set. Thelma The Unicorn is, sadly, the latter.

As much as Will Smith wanted Chris Rock to keep his wife’s name out his f*ckin’ mouth, the comedian wanted to lay as low as possible after The Slap. That included turning down good friend Jerry Seinfeld’s offer to appear in Unfrosted — primarily because his cameo would have spoofed that infamous Oscar moment.
As Jerry Seinfeld revealed on the Fly on the Wall podcast, he reached out to Chris Rock to let him get some remote revenge. “The other thing I wanted to do, that I almost did, was Chris Rock was gonna be the emcee of the Bowl and Spoon Awards. We shot that right after the Will Smith slap, and I was gonna have somebody come up on the stage and have Chris punch them out…Chris wasn’t…he wasn’t up to perform. He was still a little shook from the event. But...

Maya Rudolph opened the Mother’s Day episode of “Saturday Night Live” with a tribute to mothers — in every sense of the term.
Hosting the sketch show’s penultimate episode of the season, Rudolph began her monologue by noting she’s a four-time mom herself. “But Maya, look — you’re not just a mom,” cast member Bowen Yang reminded her. “You’re mother,” invoking the term’s use in queer slang to describe powerful, aspirational women. “You were the first to slay the house down boots, queen!”
“Who me, mother?” Rudolph asked, feigning shock. “You’re right!” The host then launched into a propulsive dance number, strutting through Studio 8H — also known as “House of Rockefeller” — in a reflective bodysuit while delivering lyrics like “Oops, I made you dance / Remember in that movie when I pooped my pants?” Other lines played on the many meanings of “mother”: “Who’s...

A number of legendary Los Angeles punk rockers appeared on the Tuesday (May 7th) episode of the new Netflix show John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A. Members of Fear, X, Minutemen, Germs, and more were featured in an “Old Punks” focus group hosted by Fred Armisen.
The focus group included Minutemen members Mike Watt and George Hurley, Fear frontman Lee Ving, X’s Exene Cervenka and DJ Bonebreak, Germs drummer Don Bolles, Avengers leader Penelope Houston, Cramps/Gun Club guitarist Kid Congo Powers, Saccarine Trust’s Joe Baiza, the Plungers’ Trudie Arguelles-Barrett, and Johnny Ramone’s widow Linda Ramone.

Perhaps, like Jerry Seinfeld, you too have spent hours wondering: What’s the deal with Pop Tarts?! Is it a breakfast item or just undercover dessert? Plot: Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, Unfrosted stars Jerry Seinfeld in his directorial debut.
Review: It took nine years after the series finale of Seinfeld for Jerry Seinfeld’s big screen debut, Bee Movie. That surreal, animated adventure was a spot-on continuation of the stand-up comedian’s brand of observational humor told within the context of a strangely specific world. Unfrosted, which reunited Seinfeld with his team of writers from Bee Movie, is another glimpse into a surreal world that allows him to explore his distinct type of comedy with an all-star cast of talent playing real and fictional characters. Boasting glossy, retro visuals and capitalizing on Seinfeld’s well-known love of breakfast, Unfrosted looks like it was fun to make. I only wish it was as much fun to watch.

His name is Nasubi. He sits alone and naked in a small apartment for months on end, trying to win food and clothing as mail-in sweepstakes prizes. He doesn’t quite know it, but his strange predicament is being broadcast to 17 million people. It sounds like a work of fiction about a torturous psychopath — something out of a “Saw” film — but in 1998, it was the premise of a Japanese reality TV show, and is now now the subject of documentary Clair Titley’s wildly intriguing (if often imbalanced) “The Contestant.”
The British documentary, now available on Hulu, chronicles the inception of this cruel and unusual game through the eyes of not only its subject — wannabe comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu, a.k.a. Nasubi — as well as TV super-producer Toshio Tsuchiya, who created the bizarre challenge for comedy/prank reality series “Susunu! Denpa Shōnen.” Starting with six-minute segments of Nasubi’s life,...

The tagline of Clair Titley’s The Contestant is “The naked truth about the world’s first reality star.” The show referred to is Susunu! Denpa Shōnen, which aired in Japan from January 1998 to March 2002, and which saw participants––usually young people eager for fame––complete grueling challenges, such as hitch-hiking from South Africa to Norway or traveling from India to Indonesia by peddle boat. The star is Tomoaki Hamatsu, better known as “Nasubi”, who appeared on Denpa Shōnen’s now infamous program A Life in Prizes. The question that the show posed was simple: how long could someone survive on competition prizes alone?
To answer it, the show’s producer, Toshio Tsuchiya, had Nasubi blindfolded and taken to a secret location––a dreary one-room apartment somewhere in Tokyo––where he was asked to strip naked and was instructed to use a selection of magazines and a large stack of...
