Spiderhead (2022)
Excellent movie - Chris H is not miscast.- Throwback to 80's.
No idea how this is only 5.5 the movie is way better than that. At times brutal and dark and others hilarious. So yes it is essentially a dark comedy. Hence why i think that Chris is not miscast at all, he plays the evil but funny narcassistic villain to perfection. He's not supposed to be some super serious Bond villain.
Seems to be alot of 80's movie influence in this as well which i loved (not just in the soundtrack but wit various character cliche's and in particular the ending. The fight scenes and the hilarious demise of one of the characters. The riding off into the sunset thing is there too all played out with some sensual Saxophone!
It makes me wonder what kind of person finds this movie confusing. Perhaps it is too orginal for them? So unwilling to use their brain, anything other than the 500th Marvel movie is just straight up rocket science.
Only downside for me is the final third seemed a bit rushed. Could have squeezed another half hour in the middle for sure.
Case 39 (2009)
Complete rip off done hundreds of times before but far better.
When you realize the entire plot of the film within the first five minutes it's not a good sign. I watched it to the end, desperately hoping there would be something original, a twist or something.
Nothing. It's awful. Far worse than any of the evil child horrors before it. Nothing scary about it whatsoever. Script is non existent and basically piggybacks off the past success of previous horro movies they rip off. It's the shallowest movie i've watched in a decade, and the scariest bit {the bathroom scene} is a straight rip off of Candyman.
Absolute unoriginal rip off cash in. Cannot believe they got such a good cast for this when it's pure trash. Will get loads of fake votes though because IMDB is also trash now.
It Chapter Two (2019)
So bad you even ruined the original
It lacks literally everything good about the original. These people have turned a classic into one of the worst movies i've ever watched. They should never make a movie again.
There are some good actors in here but the vision from the directors is an insult to the original IT. It was never supposed to be a horror with super duper fx and camera trickery and risers every two seconds. The only reason these guys saturate the film with it is because they never understood the appeal of IT in the first place. It;s so disrespectful and forever tarnishes the original films. Do NOT give these amateurs another classic film to ruin.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Rubbish
The worst Di Caprio movie i've ever watched. Jonah Hill's sarcascm is out of place .. Jennifer Lawrence acts ok but nobody cares because ultimately the storyline is ish. 7.3 ? Those are fake reviews. The film is garbage and 2 hours too long. Don't waste your time.
The Prince (2021)
The lowest of the low
This is one of the most vindictive, sickest thngs i've ever watched. It's not satire, it's not comedy. This is what real hatred spawned by jealously looks like This will without doubt scar that 8 year old child for life. He will have to endure endless abuse from this. Then they disrespect not only our queen who was running a country long before they were even born, but also mocking her recently deceased husband. It's sick. The people involved should never work in tv again.
El inocente (2021)
Wow. Awesome film.
Just randomly saw this on Netflix and It's an absolute gem .
Story has plenty of depth and twists to keep the audience hooked. Solid acting all round. Only thing i would say is you have to persevere as the begining can be a tad slow . Once you get to the heart of the story though it's brilliant.
Definitely watch it, feels more like a proper movie rather than a 'series' that's only purpose is to give you a cliffhanger for the next episode.
The Little Things (2021)
Half Hearted, Lazy and rushed
I'm a big fan of all the actors involved, especially Denzel. I love everything he's been in but this movie is awful. Everything about this production seems rushed, actors not performing to their usual standard, sounds like the composer was given a week to create all the music (and it's not even mixed). The worst thing is the editing. the constant chopping of shots . You can't get into the movie it just feels like you are in the editing room. The scene on the bridge roughly an hour in sums it up. It's supposed to be a Serial Killer Thriller along the lines of Seven and yet the actors are just smirking throughout like that was the best take they got?. Same thing soon after with Jared in the interview room when the shot changes a million times. It feels like nobody took it seriously which is a massive shame because it had potential on paper.
The Vanished (2020)
It all fell into place.
Really enjoyed it. Like others I thought the acting was a bit off and at certain points it felt a bit like a B movie. And i thought the pacing if anything was a tad rushed. Buuut. Wow that ending. I did not see that coming. As per my title it made the whole film fall into place and justifies their erratic acting. It's well worth a watch and it will be like a new experience watching it for a second time.
There's one thing i thought was left unresolved and that's the meth kid. We were led to believe he knew something and was the key to finding the girl. There were two scenes where he was battling his conscience on whether to ring the police. What did he want to tell them? How much did he or did he not know? What did he know? The last scene when he finds the jumper suggests he didn't know anything. But the fact he was intrigued by the clothing suggests he was suspicious of something.
Greyhound (2020)
WHERE WAS WILSON?
A pretty blatant rip off of the Dunkirk formula. It feels like a cash in. I admire the attempt to publicise the lesser known battles of the World War and their unsung heroes but you still need an actual story to engage the audience. What we were given was 30 seconds of Elizabath Shue giving TH a toy boat for his birthday and then 80 minutes of TH giving the same orders over and over again every five minutes over some dramatic music (which was excellent for what it was btw.) The problem with that formula is that all the sugar coating doesn't make it a good film at heart, rather it would be better placed as cutscenes in a Battleships PC game or something. Think of any great war movie - Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, Saving Private Ryan, Bridge over River Kwai etc, i'd even put Forest Gump in there,. They are excellent because first and foremost they focus on character development and make them relatable to the audience. You made me fall in love with a football called Wilson Tom, and yet i can't recall anyone from this film 20 minutes after watching it.
Don't Let Go (2019)
Excellent Film
What a gem of a film. Ignore the current low rating (5.8) . When the masses discover this it should easily climb to 7.5 +. The acting and cinematography was fantastic. Oyelowo, Reid, Williamson and Molina all deliver excellent performances. The story is clever and keeps you engaged till the end. If you like the time travel/parallel universe concept you'll really enjoy this film.
Mom and Dad (2017)
Good film... but...
I loved this film, the acting was great, the editing was amazing, the soundtrack original. Funnier than most comedies i've watched in the last few years and scarier than most serious horrors/
but the ending almost ruined the entire thing for me personally. I understand why it ended how it did although i was hoping the adults would become normal again and then the film ends with that sense of something else is going to happen (with a sequel in mind - )
All in all though very entertaining film. Cage in a role that suits him down to a T and the rest of the cast were flawless. The younger guys and girls did brilliantly as well.
Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
Great film
Judging from the trailer i went into this thinking i wasn't going to like it. Vince Vaughn is comedy wth is he doing in this? .....
Well i was totally wrong. This film is awesome and Vince Vaughn plays the lead perfectly. The story is highly entertaining and despite the film being over two hours long the pacing is so spot on the film flies by. I actually wouldn't have minded an additional half an hour. The violence, music, and ending of the film reminded me a lot of Tarantino.
Vince Vaughn has just opened himself up to a host of film genres with that great performance imo. I look forward to the other film he is doing with Zahler.
Gerald's Game (2017)
Fantastic Surprise
I didn't see this one coming. Absolutely awesome movie which holds your attention the whole way through. The acting was great, the script spot on and the ending is perfect. I had to look it up after the film and low and behold it was made by one of my favourite directors, Mike Flanagan. I would love to see him do more King adaptations.
MUST WATCH.
It (2017)
1990 version was better
The old TV movie from 1990 is better and portrays a bleaker derry that is truer to the book. It portrayed more mystery, suspense and in general was much more eerie.
The new version isn't scary AT ALL and the costume design for IT himself reminds me more of Beetlejuice or someone out of Alice In Wonderland whilst the other mutations just make you laugh.
The casting is excellent and the acting is pretty good, in parts, but most of the kids are really bad at acting genuinely scared which makes the 'supposed to be' scary moments essentially emotionless.
The worst thing for me is the directors 'decision' to omit the adult portion of the story to make a... you guessed it... another separate movie. Quite ridiculous when one of the best bits about the book is how King interweaves the two timelines.
Maybe worth a watch if you like Stranger Things (which imo is scarier), but if you like the book or want a truer portrayal of IT watch the 1990 version.
The Ottoman Lieutenant (2017)
Should have been much much better
This is one of the most unexpectedly disappointing films i've seen in a long time especially given the people involved and the glowing reviews. I loved Joseph Ruben's previous films in the 90s and Ben Kingsley is in my top five actors of all time.
Unfortunately the Casting is wrong and, although the acting is OK, the fake accents are horrific. The worst thing though is the pace of the shots / editing / scene changes etc because it's so rushed you couldn't care less about the characters or whatever is happening in the film, It's like watching something in fast forward.
The composer ticks all the right boxes with the score but it feels futile because i have absolutely no interest in the characters.
Watch this after watching something like Hacksaw Ridge, Braveheart, Titanic and you will understand what im saying.
Get Out (2017)
A Horror Classic
There are some films which you never want to end. There are some films that have a lifetime lasting impact on you. There are some films that once the credits roll you gasp in awe and stop for a minute and think Holy Ssshhh that was a work of genius.
If you can't tell I think Get Out is one such film. In fact I think it might be the best Horror film i've seen since the Shining. And i don't say that lightly.
Massive respect to Jordan Peels for writing and directing this masterpiece. Please keep the Horrors coming, the genre needs you.
The casting was spot on and the acting was top notch as was the MUSIC composition.
Deserves a couple of Oscars for sure.
Poker Night (2014)
Felt Nostalgic and I don't know why
I found this film very entertaining. It seems to take various styles of 90's films and roll them up into one, it feels old school but at the same time it remains original and fresh. The blend of genres, its fast moving pace, the surreal flashbacks and the way it's narrated make it feel like it could be based on a graphic novel/comic book.
The acting is top notch by everyone and the directing/editing was flawless.
63pc is a good score on here but i would personally say it's a 6.9 verging into the early 7's. The RT and Metacritic scores are definitely too low.
Watch it, it is fun and at the same time oddly quite disturbing!
I'll be keeping an eye out for more of Greg Francis' stuff for sure.
Wish I Was Here (2014)
Great film
This was going to be my comment to the 'looks boring' thread but I decided to make it a review.
Wish I Was Here is a very good film with excellent acting from the whole cast, literally i couldn't fault one person. I was particularly impressed with the two kids who had some difficult roles to pull off considering the films adult themes.
Some of the younger audience may well find it boring/dull, that's likely because they cannot relate yet. It focuses very much on a particular stage of one's life : new family - parents departing - work and new stresses you didn't have when you were young etc etc.
I am 31 and can relate to everything Braff goes through. His relationship with his brother/wife/dad/kids, it feels so close to home, so 'real life' that it can make you think it's based on you! There's one bit towards the end that made me shed a tear (when at the beginning i was laughing out loud). This one upsetting scene was so close to how i and my family experienced the scenario it is uncanny. Yet that just shows how well thought out the script was and how good a job the actors did.
Funny 'a la Scrubs' at times, and sad at others. It's accurate to real life and will strike a chord with many people. It's the kind of film that by the end of it, reminds you of what's important in life.
All in all It's a more mature film than what I was expecting. It also highlights just how diverse an actor Braff is. The Braff bros did an excellent job with the writing and directing. The music fit perfectly, and it was shot well.
I felt it may have been 15 minutes or so too long, but honestly that doesn't take anything away from the film.
Really good work, well done to all involved.
Transcendence (2014)
Blends of Inception, The Fountain, Lawnmower Man etc
Im lucky to have even watched this as I was initially put off by the horrible trailers, then i kept reading all over the internet that the film was .... ridiculous.
But thats what pushed me to watch it, I hate it when people say a film is bad because it's 'ridiculous'. Check the scores her on IMDb for inception or The Fountain. Transcendence is like a blend of those two films, yet it is actually far more level grounded than the both of them.
The Roster of actors here is perfect. Depp (love anything he does), Hall (only saw her in The Awakening and she was brilliant), Bettany, Murphy, Mara, Freeman (again love most things they are in).
None of them could have done any better performance wise. Herein lies the problem - The two major flaws is that the film is too short, it could and should have been 3 hours, and because its so short, the script doesn't allow the characters to develop, which with such an abundance of brilliant actors is tragic.
Everything is squeezed into a 1hr 50m timeframe, and it feels rushed.
But ultimately there are positives from that, i wanted more and i was left wanting more. I would love a sequel although i doubt that's going to happen.
On a side note the original score is BRILLIANT. Mychael Danna blew me away with it. But i really didn't think that country song fit in at all.
Overall, it gets 10 out of 10 from me, because i want more of it, and i want these actors doing more films like it.
Man of Steel (2013)
Not Inception.but Deception
If ever there was a cash in....
I can't believe i fell for the hype, i wondered why the trailers were more teasers than actual plot reveals, now i know why, there is literally no story.
As many have said, it starts out with potential. Crowe and Shannon are awesome on screen together (somebody like Ridley Scott needs to cast these two together in a decent sci fi). You are for a minute fooled into thinking there is going to be an epic and complex re imagining of the Superman story.
Oh boy no! 10 minutes in and we meet Clarke on earth. Alas it begins - Constant flicking between time periods. Humans hate Clarke but he loves to help people - you know the score. Dad dies after a whole two minutes of screen time. Superman saves Lois Lane. They are like long lost friends on their second meeting. Cue Zod appearing and from then on in its pure fighting and explosions. Then you think you are watching war of the worlds. Then the film ends.
Its like those youtube videos that sum up a film in 10 seconds.
THE CASTING IS GOOD (Cavill and Adams do make a good Clarke and Lois)... THE ACTING CANNOT BE FAULTED... CINEMATOGRAPHY IS VERY NICE... THE MUSIC IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT... THE DIRECTING AND WRITING IS PURE GARBAGE AND AN INSULT TO THE COMPLEX STORY THAT SUPERMAN, ITS FANS AND THE GREAT ACTING ROSTER INVOLVED DESERVES.
Watch Smallville or the Christopher Reeves versions instead. Whilst these are far from perfect they are leagues ahead and at least attempt to go into some detail.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Better score than Truman Show? IMDb is now a joke.
Seriously, in the words of Public Enemy. Don't believe the hype. Especially don't believe the top reviews on IMDb calling this film "stunning...magnificent....most original horror since scream". These Marketing/PR firms are really spoiling what used to be a reliable catalogue for good films.
For starters this is not a horror film, its not even a cliché filled bad attempt to be a horror film like the trailer led me to believe. Its in no way original, a blatant rip off of the Truman Show.
I really like Joss Whedon and most of his films, especially Serenity, but I agree with the other 1 star reviewers, this is quite possibly the worst film i have or will ever watch. To give it one star is being nice. Watch the Truman Show or Friday the 13th instead.
