Dan Wallin, the music scoring engineer who recorded such classic film scores as “Spartacus,” “Bullitt,” “The Wild Bunch” and “Out of Africa,” died early Wednesday in Hawaii. He was 97.
Twice Oscar-nominated for best sound (1970’s “Woodstock” and 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), he won a 2009 Emmy for sound mixing on the Academy Awards telecast and received two additional Emmy nominations in the sound mixing category.
But it was Wallin’s skill behind the console, recording and mixing musical scores for movies and TV, that won him legions of fans among nearly all of Hollywood’s top composers and ensured steady employment for more than half a century.
He recorded the music for an estimated 500 films, including those for “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “Finian’s Rainbow” in the 1960s; “The Way We Were,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Nashville,” “King Kong” and “Saturday Night Fever” in the 1970s; “Somewhere in Time,” “The Right Stuff...

In fact, Bassett feels her connection with Boseman went a lot deeper than what was seen on the big screens. As she recently shared during an interview, not only did working alongside the late legend mean an incredible lot to her, but she even felt that she was perhaps destined to play Boseman’s mother, almost as if it was all already written in the stars. Here’s why.

Michael Beach was in his late twenties and primed for a breakout performance when he landed the role of Pluto in Carl Franklin's "One False Move." This was not supposed to be that performance. It was a low-budget crime flick from a couple of unknown screenwriters named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson that was intended to go straight to video. But when L.A. Weekly journo Anne Thompson caught an early screening, she spread the word to her critic colleagues. Once the Los Angeles Times' Sheila Benson and the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert began raving about the film, the distributor, I.R.S. Releasing, opted for a small theatrical release. The movie wound up on multiple year-end top 10 lists and earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations (with Franklin beating out newcomer Quentin Tarantino for Best Director).

“Barbenheimer” weekend was an unmitigated success for the theatrical industry, powering the fourth-biggest overall weekend ever for domestic theaters. “Barbie” passed $200 million in five days following a $162 million Friday-through-Sunday launch. Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” soared past $100 million on its fifth day of release following a jaw-dropping $82 million debut.
“‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ both rolled the dice on two auteur-driven films, non-sequel, non-franchise, non-superhero [movies] and the results paid off in a big way,” Comscore senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian told TheWrap.
If Hollywood takes the wrong lessons from this unusual success, we’ll probably see more grim biopics and more movies based on toys. Drawing the right lessons from these movies’ outsized performance requires a little more digging.

“How Stella Got Her Groove Back” star Angela Bassett and director Kevin Rodney Sullivan didn’t hold back Saturday night at a Tribeca Festival screening and talkback celebrating the movie’s 25th anniversary. Going long in a lively discussion moderated by Torell Shavone Taylor at the Sva theater in New York City, the two got candid about choreographing Stella’s sex scenes, casting at 20-something Taye Diggs to “fulfill the fantasy” and trusting an Oscar-winning scene partner like Whoopi Goldberg to hold the film together.
The beloved romantic comedy from 1998 stars Bassett as Stella Payne, a 40-year-old businesswoman who takes a well-needed vacation in Jamaica, only to fall for a handsome man half her age, Winston Shakespeare (Diggs). Twenty years ago, Alisa Lynn Valdés released her first novel, "The Dirty Girls Social Club." It was a runaway success, and the writer published 12 more books in its wake. Then she took a 10-year break, coming back with "Hollow Beasts," a suspenseful murder mystery that is out now as an e-book and hitting bookshelves on Apr. 1. The novel introduces us to a new protagonist - rookie game warden and former poetry professor Jodi Luna.
I catch up with Valdés while we hike out to the spot where she originally dreamed up her new novel. Looking back, Valdés isn't sure if writing "The Dirty Girls Social Club" was selling out or not. She styled that first book after what she heard the publishing industry wanted - a Latina Terry McMillan (who wrote beloved titles like "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back").

Chicago – It’s Oscar Week, as the 95th Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 12th, 2023, on ABC-tv. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress is Angela Bassett for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” her second nomination after “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” in 1994.
After earning her Masters Degree at the Yale School of Drama in the 1980s, Bassett took to the New York stage, most notably in two of August Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle” plays. She expanded with parts in film and TV, including “Boyz in the Hood” (1991). Breakthrough recognition would come in the next couple of years, as Bassett co-starred with Denzel Washington in “Malcolm X” (as Malcolm’s wife Betty Shabazz) and her Oscar nominated role as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993).

Twenty-nine years ago, Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne were celebrating their Academy Award nominations for portraying Tina Turner and Ike Turner in 1993’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” This year, Bassett is nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar for her commanding performance as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and her longtime collaborator couldn’t be more thrilled.
Calling in between interviews for “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Fishburne tells Variety, “It’s what’s in my heart that I’d like to talk about more than what’s on my mind. I’m just really, really happy about all of the accolades that have been coming Angela’s way for this performance.”
Fishburne sought out “Wakanda Forever” early in its theatrical run, interested to see what the Marvel sequel had in store.
“I was just blown away by a couple of things,” he says, recounting the experience.

She also won best actress in a drama series for her work in the Fox series "911."

Filmmaker and producer Ryan Coogler introduced Angela Bassett at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where she won the Montecito Award for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
For almost 15 minutes, Coogler explained how Bassett was influential to him when he was just a five-year-old boy watching “Boyz n the Hood” with his father in 1991. From that movie to Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” to “What’s Love Got To Do With It” to “Waiting to Exhale” – Coogler said watching Bassett in those movies helped him grow an appreciation for the arts.
“I didn’t understand it then, I didn’t know I wanted to be a filmmaker,” Coogler said. “But Angela was representing something. What was it? The truth.”
Coogler added, “The truth is the well that we pull from as artists, as communicators, as people. Science tells us that life started on the continent of Africa. I like to think we...

“That representation that I longed for when I was a young actor coming up? Heading into the 2023 Grammy Awards Sunday night, Beyoncé was our odds-on favorite to win Album of the Year for her critically acclaimed disc “Renaissance.” The evening’s host, Trevor Noah, even gushed over her awards supremacy throughout the evening, at some points making Queen B herself look a bit uncomfortable. She did take home four trophies, making her the biggest Grammy winner of all time with 33, but lost the night’s biggest prize to Harry Styles‘ “Harry’s House.”
It was a ceremony filled with surprises — Lizzo took down Adele and Styles to win Record of the Year for her smash “About Damn Time.” Perhaps nobody was more shocked on the night than Bonnie Raitt, who won Song of the Year for “Just Like That.” Had Beyoncé won Album of the Year, she would have become just the fourth Black woman to achieve this feat, and the first in 24 years.

If you’ve lurked on the internet in recent months, you might’ve noticed Celine Dion’s name more often than usual. First was the singer’s saddening news about an illness she’s been facing. Second was the discourse around Rolling Stone’s Greatest Vocalists of All Time list, which weirdly omitted Dion. Dion’s exclusion left many angry at the publication, especially given how storied her career has been. Throughout the decades, she has cemented herself as one of the biggest voices of her generation and has earned countless accolades. Perhaps the biggest of those was her Grammy win for Album of the Year in 1997 for her classic record “Falling into You.”

Angela Bassett is now one of the most revered and respected actresses in Hollywood after multiple decades in the business. There were only two years between her breakthrough role in "Boyz n the Hood," to her Oscar-nominated role as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It." Bassett not winning that year has long been considered one of the worst snubs in Oscar history. Despite Bassett's deserved stature in the industry, being tasked with finding substantial roles in 12 good movies was harder than anticipated. This goes to show that however talented and skilled a Black actress is, she will not necessarily get the opportunities for leading roles that she should rightfully have.
Despite this, Bassett has still worked with a wide range of filmmakers, including John Sayles, Wes Craven, John Singleton, Forest Whitaker, and Spike Lee, and has taken on a wide range of roles. She has worked with Laurence Fishburne three times,...

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards are set to be telecast live, February 5, on CBS, with Beyonce leading the way with nine nominations for her critically acclaimed album, “Renaissance.” While many consider Queen B the clear frontrunner to take the evening’s top prize, Album of the Year, it is worth examining the terrible track record the Grammy Awards have had with women of color.
As main album artists, Black women make up around 10 percent of all Album of the Year nominees in the 64-year history of music’s most prestigious event. Of those nominees, only three women were able to pull off a win (less than five-percent of all winners). So while Beyonce may be leading on our Gold Derby racetrack, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll see a repeat of her 2017 loss for “Lemonade,” where she was heavily favored but still lost to Adele (“25”).

One reason that makes Angela Bassett‘s Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” so unique is that it’s the first-ever such notice for a Marvel Cinematic Universe performance. Another reason is that it marks exactly 29 years since Bassett last contended at the 1994 Academy Awards. Talk about a long time coming.
Three decades ago, Bassett was nominated in Best Actress for her performance as Tina Turner in the biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” a role that won her a Golden Globe. I Wanna Dance with Somebody review: The first authorised biopic turns Whitney Houston into a product
When Whitney Houston died in 2012, in a drug-related accidental drowning at age 48, the search for an explanation took on a desperate edge. Tell-all memoirs were published by her inner circle. Documentaries – 2017’s Whitney: Can I Be Me and 2018’s Whitney among them – functioned more like space probes. A Lifetime series directed by Houston’s Waiting to Exhale co-star, Angela Bassett, came across as earnest but slight. Most of these positioned Houston as an Icarus plummeting back down to Earth, with an outsized focus on her latter years of addiction, her fading vocal range, and her tabloid domination.
She’d become one of the many, cautionary tales that haunt pop culture’s margins, all at the expense of that miraculous talent that once earned her the nickname “The Voice”. So, it’s hard to fault Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the first biopic authorised by her estate, for its attempt to recentre her legacy.

Directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Anthony McCarten, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody is the new biopic on the singer’s life. Her history is full of dense material and naturally some things have to be left out for the sake of time, but 2.5 hours isn’t enough to do the story justice. The movie stars Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Nafessa Williams, and Ashton Sanders.
The film starts with Whitney (Naomi Ackie) singing in the church choir run by her mother Cissy (Tamara Tunie), who also has a small band she performs with where Whitney sings back up. While chilling in the park listening to music the young singer meets Robyn (Nafessa Williams), a young girl from her neighborhood who she befriends. A friend of the family brings Arista Records CEO Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) to a show where Cissy is supposed to lead, but she pushes...

If being the most decorated female singer of all time and being dubbed “The Voice” aren’t honorific enough, Whitney Houston is now getting the biopic treatment. Now, the first trailer for I Wanna Dance With Somebody has dropped, showcasing Houston in all of her glory.
The trailer for I Wanna Dance with Somebody opens with Whitney Houston being forced to take the stage after her mother can’t perform. With famed record producer Clive Davis in the audience, Houston is soon in the spotlight. Guided by early single “How Will I Know”, various clips show Houston as both a commanding presence and the target of scrutiny for not making “black enough” music. Another key highlight is her performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl Xxv, one of the most iconic renditions of the song.

Forest Whitaker has shed new plot details about Francis Ford Coppola’s mystery project “Megalopolis,” which is set to start shooting in August.
