Is it possible to go to prom these days without thinking about Carrie? Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel has become so ingrained in the zeitgeist that it’s nearly impossible to shop for a prom dress without a fleeting fear that it might become covered in blood. And perhaps that’s a good thing. Revolutionary at the time, the story concludes with a shocking act of righteous revenge, but mixed into the wreckage is a cautionary tale about bullying and religious abuse. Carrie may wield the fiery hand of justice in the film’s final act, but only after a lifetime of victimization at the hands of her classmates and mother. Maybe thinking about Carrie and the real life outcasts that share her...

Arrow Video’s January release is the 1970s horror masterwork Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek as a telekinetic title character. If you’ve got a taste for terror – make sure you grab Carrie on 4K Uhd from Arrow Video.
The release includes commentaries and visual essays, a wealth of interviews and archive featurettes, and comes in limited edition packaging, with a 40-page perfect bound book, a fold-out double-sided poster, six collector’s postcards!
In 1974, Stephen King published his first novel, the story of Carrie White, a troubled young girl, bullied by her peers and daughter to a fanatical fundamentalist mother, who discovers she has telekinetic powers. In 1976, it became the first of his works to be adapted for the big screen and, to this day, remains one of the very best.

There's a billion bits of "Star Wars" trivia out there, but one of my favorites is actually from before a single foot of film ran through the camera. You have to remember that, though "Star Wars" is a multi-billion dollar IP now, the original film barely got made. George Lucas had success with "American Graffiti," but this was a script that nobody in Hollywood understood, even Alan Ladd Jr., the Fox exec who gave the film a greenlight.
Lucas's world-building impressed most people, but they just didn't understand the technobabble jargon in a genre that was predominantly either super serious like "2001" or extra campy like "Barbarella." "Star Wars" existed somewhere between the two and that threw everybody, from studio execs to the actors auditioning for the movie, for a loop.
This was also an era pre-internet, so when Hamill went in to his first meeting for the role of Luke Skywalker...

Brian De Palma's "Carrie" was the film that defined a generation. Its blend of coming-of-age themes, fantastical magic, and slasher-style bloodshed makes it a genre-bending film that time just can't seem to forget.
The 1976 horror tells the story of a sheltered girl who lives under her obsessively religious mother's tyrannical rule, a dictatorship made all the worse by the onset of Carrie's period. Her mother's frenzy combined with a cruel prank at the prom pushes the shy young girl to a mental break, complete with telekinetic powers. The Stephen King adaptation launched some incredibly notable careers, including John Travolta, who plays high school bully Billy Nolan. Sadly, not all of the cast has lived to see the end of 2023, including Piper Laurie, whose performance as Carrie's mother earned her one of three Oscar nominations in her lifetime.

It took about ten minutes for me to realize that Pursuit was going to be an epic shitshow. That’s how long it takes to get to the first shootout. Between the overuse of slow motion, blood that looks like red paint and a pile of cash that explodes into the air for no apparent reason it’s more laughable than funny.
As it turns out Rick Calloway has just shot up an undercover police operation. Why? Because the same dealers the police were targeting apparently were involved in the disappearance of his wife. George Lucas' "Star Wars" (which eventually acquired the subtitle "Episode IV — A New Hope") transformed cinema in a myriad of ways when it blasted onto movie screens in the summer of 1977. The richly imagined tale of a young Tatooine farm boy who becomes the unlikely hero of a galactic rebellion sent kids staggering out of theaters with grandiose dreams of saving the universe. A mere two years after the end of the Vietnam War, America was hungry for a return to the righteousness of World War II flicks and John Wayne Westerns. "Star Wars," along with "Jaws" and "Rocky," spun that beautiful, aspirational lie. These characters — particularly the trinity of the naive hero, the strong-willed princess, and the charming rogue — were who we wanted to be.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

William Hopper, the actor who played the stalwart private detective Paul Drake on the hit 1957 legal drama "Perry Mason," was a notoriously prolific smoker, often seen with a cigarette hanging from his lips on camera. In 1970, Hopper suffered a stroke and succumbed to smoking-related health issues a month later. He was 55 years old.
As Paul Drake, Hopper was a cynic, a more grizzled presence built to balance Perry Mason's serious intellect. He was the Dr. McCoy to Perry Mason's Spock. For those unfamiliar with the series, "Perry Mason" was about a Los Angeles defense lawyer, played brilliantly by Raymond Burr, who was always careful to investigate the clients he was hired to defend. Typically, innocent people came to Mason, and he was always curious about the details of their case. Mason would always face off against the L.A. District Attorney Hamilton Burger (William Talman), who never won a case against him.

Erle Stanley Gardner’s brilliant and savvy criminal defense attorney Perry Mason has been on the case since 1933’s “The Case of the Velvet Claws.” The attorney describes himself in that first novel as a “lawyer who has specialized in trial work, and in a lot of criminal work…I’m a specialist on getting people out of trouble.”
Inspired by the famed Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Earl Rogers who only lost three of his 77 murder trials, Mason was featured in 82 novels and four short stories, six Warner Bros. murder mystery movies, a long-running radio series, the beloved 1957-66 CBS series starring Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale as his true-blue assistant Della Street, movies and a 1973-74 series with Monte Markham. Matthew Rhys (“The Americans” ) plays the latest incarnation in HBO’s stylish “Perry Mason” series, currently in its second season.

The Greatest American Hero is a show that’s much beloved by folks of a certain generation. If you grew up in the seventies or eighties, the theme song is instantly iconic. In fact, the track “Believe it or Not” by Joey Scarbury actually made it all the way to the number 2 spot on the Billboard Charts. It was actually a bigger hit than the show itself, which only ran for two and a half seasons before being cancelled with five unaired episodes in early 1983. Yet, it remains part of the pop culture, with talk of rebooting it every now and then.
A reboot would definitely make sense given how obsessed people are with superheroes, with the red and black suit the hero wears iconic in its own way. The show starred cult horror icon William Katt (House) as Ralph Hanley, a teacher who’s endowed with superhuman abilities by aliens,...

Haunted houses are a standard in horror for a reason. It’s not just the spectral invasion of our home that unnerves, but the unpredictability that comes with ghostly presences. A masked maniac can be stopped or temporarily subdued, but all bets are off in haunted houses.

Brian De Palma's "Carrie" is arguably more of an important, relevant horror film today than it was during its original release in 1976. The character arc of Carrie White is one of the most shocking and severe transformations in cinema, and it remains just as powerful today. Carrie represents the bullied outcasts and the quiet masses who never feel any level of acceptance whatsoever. In a decade of legendary performances, Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Carrie remains one of the most memorable acting accomplishments of the seventies. It's tragically poignant at times, and then, eerily triumphant when she enacts her psychic revenge during the bloody, fireball finale.
In early roles, John Travolta, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen and William Katt play high school bullies who have no idea what's in store for them. Those interactions with the other actors surely put Spacek in the right headspace to play the victim. But...

Ti West's new psychological horror film "Pearl" is out in theaters, and it's definitely worth a watch. It's about a sweet young woman named Pearl (Mia Goth) who wants to be a famous actress, and she'll stop at nothing to make that happen. If Pearl was growing up today she'd probably rise to fame as a chaotic TikTok star, but unfortunately she's stuck in 1918: There's still a pandemic going on, but there's not even any internet to help pass the time. Can you really blame her for going a little off the rails?
The obvious parallel that comes to mind with "Pearl" is the beloved classic "The Wizard of Oz." Not only did Ti West embrace the vibrant technicolor look of the old movie, but Pearl's motivations are remarkably similar to Dorothy's: She wants to get off this miserable old farm. Both movies also memorably feature a scarecrow,...

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" can't outrun the posse of remakes in Hollywood, where everything old is new again. The Oscar-winning 1969 Western, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, is in the National Film Registry, and the American Film Institute has recognized it as one of the 100 greatest American movies of all time. It's a bona fide classic, and at first glance, the idea of redoing it as a TV series seems as iffy as the scene in Robert Altman's industry satire "The Player," where a screenwriter pitches "The Graduate, Part II." But executive producers Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo who directed two of the top five highest-grossing films of all time ("Avengers: Endgame" and "Avengers: Infinity War"), are going to give it the old college try, anyway — and they're bringing Regé-Jean Page and Glen Powell along for the ride.

It’s time for a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1992 mess that’s known as House IV (get it Here). Unlike the previous sequels in the anthological House franchise, this one is a direct follow-up to the original House… but it’s one that left many fans wishing the filmmakers had just left House alone. To find out why, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Lewis Abernathy from a screenplay by Geof Miller and Deirdre Higgins (with R.J. Robertson and Jim Wynorski receiving story credit), House IV – which is also known as House IV: The Repossession and House IV: Home Deadly Home – has the following synopsis:
After Roger Cobb is killed in a car accident, his wife and young daughter move into an old house haunted by a Native American curse.

The Baby: "The HBO original eight-episode limited series The Baby, from creators Siân Robins-Grace and Lucy Gaymer, debuts on Sunday, April 24 (10:30-11:00 p.m. Et/Pt) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. A horror comedy co-production with Sky, and produced by Sister and Proverbial Pictures, The Baby presents a darkly funny, raw examination of motherhood, from the perspective of a woman who doesn’t want to be one.
Michelle De Swarte (“The Duchess”) stars as 38-year-old Natasha, who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies. But when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own, her life dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative, but incredibly cute, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a surreal horror show. As she discovers the true extent of the baby’s deadly nature, Natasha makes increasingly desperate attempts to get rid of it.

WillI ABC continue to develop a live-action TV series reboot of "The Greatest American Hero" (1981) starring Hannah Simone ("New Girl") as an 'empowered' woman, who is given an alien powered supersuit, or will they opt for a ‘ woke’ interpretation of the main character ?

Here are two questions I have never asked myself: (1) "Where is my wife?" (2) "Did my father have something to do with her disappearance?" When you are Emile Hirsch and your father is John Cusack, though, and you find yourself in a new trailer for a movie called Pursuit, those questions become entirely relevant. Jake Manley, Elizabeth Ludlow and William Katt also star; Brian Skiba directed. Per the official verbiage: "John Cusack (Grosse Pointe Blank) and Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) star in this action thriller about a tough cop's hunt for an even tougher criminal. "Detective Breslin crosses paths with Calloway (Hirsch), a ruthless hacker desperate to find his wife, who has been kidnapped by a drug cartel. When Calloway escapes police custody,...

"Keep me alive and I will give you names." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for an action film titled Pursuit, a new film from genre filmmaker Brian Skiba. Another of these forgettable direct-to-video looking action movies? Unfortunately. John Cusack and Emile Hirsch star in this action thriller about a troubled cop's hunt for a ruthless hacker, who’s committing savage violence as he searches for his kidnapped wife. But is Calloway's crime-boss father somehow involved in this explosive situation? Starring Jake Manley, Elizabeth Ludlow, William Katt, Andrew Stevens, and Graham Patrick Martin. This guy isn't the best director, he often makes action schlock, but these movies still do look fun in a beer & pizza movie night kind of way. I am also amazed they still totally overdo the hacker character in movies like this. Check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brian Skiba's Pursuit, direct from Lionsgate's...

Superhero shows may be omnipresent on television now, but that wasn’t the case in 1981. Believe it or not, The Greatest American Hero was the only live-action superhero show airing at the time! The show, a campy, tongue-in-cheek homage that capitalized on the success of the first two Superman films, never became a Top 10 […]

If you're looking for some action this weekend, you might be interested in Overrun.
Writer/director Josh Tessier and actor/producer Omid Zader have joined forces for this action-packed feature that leans heavily into comedy with good results.
Between them, they have over 100 film and TV credits as stunt actors and coordinators, and this film is their vision.
They shot the film in just 15 days, but you'd never guess it. It's fun from start to finish, and the pacing is quick but not brutal.
It can't be an easy accomplishment to film your vision; it's even more challenging to do it in such a short time.
Zader stars as Marcus Lombardi, a former extraction specialist who finds himself in a bit of a pickle when his sister is discovered to be an informant for an underworld kingpin, Ray Barren (Robert Miano).
Marcus gets his friends, who all have specific and handy sets of skills,...

Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Rushed, an indie thriller directed by Vibeke Muasya that stars Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Robert Patrick, Jake Weary and Peri Gilpin. A theatrical release is planned.
Hogan penned the screenplay and stars as Barbara O’Brien, an upstate New York Irish Catholic mother who says her rosary daily, then swears profusely as she drives her kids to school. Hogan also produced with Peter Hogan, Patrick Clifton, Erin Fraser and Patrick; Peter Munson Hogan, Marie Gade and Jo Haskin are co-producers. The film is a co-production of Emerald Caz Productions and Zentropa Films.

Hello! Welcome back to a brand-new installment of... what? Why are you looking at me like that? Oh, I see. You’re judging me, aren’t you? You’re questioning how a supposed lifelong horror fan who’s been writing about the genre for nigh on five years can have never seen one of the cornerstones of ’70s horror.
Look, I get it, but just back off. We all have at least one or two of those shameful blind spots, and this month I finally get to tick this one off the checklist thanks to Valeska Griffiths, who you might know as the Executive Editor of the horror journal Grim, Founder and Editor at Anatomy of a Scream, and a co-host of the Riverdale-centric Milkshakes and Mimosas podcast. Rest assured, Griffiths was just as surprised as you when she found out I’d not seen Brian De Palma’s adaptation...

"Did you saw your driver was new?" Momentum Pics has unveiled an official trailer for an action thriller titled The 2nd, from Arizona-native genre filmmaker Brian Skiba. Unfortunately this looks like jingoistic propaganda disguised as an action movie - tread carefully. Ryan Phillippe stars as a secret service agent on his way to pick up his estranged son from his college campus when he finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes terrorist operation. The daughter of a Supreme Court Justice, and his son's friend, is the target and this armed faction will stop at nothing to kidnap her and use her as leverage for a pending landmark legal case. Also starring Casper Van Dien, Jack Griffo, Lexi Simonsen, & William Katt. No surprise - this looks really awful. A wannabe, knock-off White House Down with bad lighting and bad performances. Here’s a list of more than 50 different horror movies that are currently streaming for free on both the Tubi and Vudu platforms, featuring slashers, creature features, sci-fi/horror mash-ups, cult classics, and films from the likes of George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Dario Argento, David Cronenberg, and so many more talented horror greats.
The only caveat is that you have to endure some advertisements and then you’re all set with endless terror-filled entertainment choices for this Memorial Day Weekend. Also, keep in mind that this list doesn’t include all the great horror that’s currently streaming on both services, so be sure to poke around to see all the excellent other genre films they offer as well.

Jan-Michael Vincent’s passion for the ocean, as captured in the classic surfer film Big Wednesday, will be celebrated at a special memorial service to be held next month in Malibu.
The producers of the 2011 documentary Hollywood Don’t Surf, which explores the film industry’s relationship with surfing, are sponsoring the memorial, which comes after Vincent died February 10 at age 73. Appropriately enough, the event will be held at Malibu surfer hangout Duke’s. Big Wednesday director John Milius will co-host the event and appear.
“Jmv, as he called himself, passed away in relative obscurity a couple of months ago back east, and most of the coverage he got focused on the wrong part of his life,” said Hollywood Don’t Surf producer Chris Kobin. “We want to look at the great career he had, both as an actor and a surfer, so we’ve invited his friends and fans to come celebrate him.

One of my favorite horror movies to watch when I was growing up was a 1985 film called House. Outside of my family, I don’t know a lot of people that are familiar with this movie, so I thought I’d bring it to your attention just in case. If you have seen the movie… congratulations! You win! And now you can go watch it again.
The movie was written by Fred Dekker (Monster Squad) and Ethan Wiley and it was directed by Steve Miner. House also had a great cast that included William Katt (Greatest American Hero), George Wendt (Cheers) and Richard Moll (Night Court).
The story follows a character named Roger Cobb, a Vietnam vet with a career as a horror novelist, whose son Jimmy mysteriously disappears while visiting his aunt's house. As Roger doesn’t give up looking for Jimmy his marriage comes to an end and...

It’s hard to believe that Brian De Palma’s “Carrie” came out almost 42 years ago. Star John Travolta took to Instagram to share a set photo from the horror film to remind us.
“On the set of #Carrie over 40 years ago,” Travolta wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “I don’t think any of us could have known the life the movie would take on for decades…or how many times we’d have to explain to our families the blood was actually corn syrup!”
The photo features Travolta, who portrayed bully Billy Nolan. Sissy Spacek (who played the titular character) also appears in the pic along with Nancy Allen and William Katt.

“Sci-fi For The Mind”
By Raymond Benson
Renowned science fiction writer Jerome Bixby produced many short stories in the genre, but he is perhaps most well-known for writing a handful of classic Star Trek episodes. The memorable original Twilight Zone entry, “It’s a Good Life,” was based on his short story, as was the same segment in The Twilight Zone—The Motion Picture (1983). Bixby was also responsible for the stories or scripts for sci-fi films such as Fantastic Voyage (1966), and It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958).
Bixby’s last work, allegedly completed on his deathbed in 1998, was the screenplay The Man from Earth. Nearly ten years later (2007), Bixby’s son Emerson helped bring it to the screen as producer. The low-budget feature was directed by Richard Schenkman and starred David Lee Smith as “John Oldman,” a man in the present day who has lived without aging for 14,000 years. Released with little fanfare,...

We take a look back at the history of Stephen King's first bestseller, Carrie, after Riverdale turned it into a musical.
Last year, Riverdale staged Carrie: The Musical in a very special episode that was part Glee and part horror hellstorm. It is the latest example of how Stephen King's first novel continues to resonate throughout the pop culture landscape. The reasoning for this is simple: Carrie is a universally relatable story about outsiders that has much to say about topics like bullying, revenge, teen angst, religion, and telekinetic ass-kicking..
To examine just how much of a juggernaut Carrie is, we've put together this timeline dating from the book's genesis to today to provide some context into why the tale has endured for so long.
1973: Legend has it that Stephen King was unhappy with his early work on Carrie, which was originally intended as a magazine story,...

ABC has cast The New Girl's Hannah Simone in the lead role of their upcoming reboot of the classic 80s series Greatest American Hero.
It was previously revealed that the new version of the series would center on a 30-year-old Indian-American woman from Cleveland named Meera. It's explained that her talents include tequila drinking, karaoke and... not much else. "Then some aliens entrust her with a super suit to protect the planet, and the world has never been in more unreliable hands."
I liked Simone in The New Girl and I hope that this new series turns out to be a good project for her. Rebooting a fan-favorite classic of anything is a rough and dangerous business these days. Most of the time these types of projects end up not working out.

We’re betting Hannah Simone will look pretty great in tights and a cape.
The New Girl star has landed — or flown away with? — the lead role in ABC’s upcoming reboot of The Greatest American Hero, our sister site Deadline is reporting. Simone will play Meera, an Indian-American woman with a fondness for tequila and karaoke whose life is turned upside down when she’s entrusted with a superhero suit that grants superhuman powers to whoever wears it. (It doesn’t grant you any knowledge of how to use those powers, however.)

With New Girl coming to an end, series’ co-star Hannah Simone has been tapped for the title role in ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot The Greatest American Hero, from the Fresh Off the Boat duo of Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan. In the reimagining with a gender switch of Steven J. Cannell's 1981 cult classic, the unlikely (super)hero at the center, played by William Katt in the original, is being reconceived as an Indian-American woman. Written by Fruchbom, The Greates…...
