Cesar Salad
Several people claim to have invented The Caesar Salad. In the story of Mr. Cesar, as he tells it to the listeners of the Tough Times Dour Hour radio show in 1933, his fame as an unsung chef is buried in time with some odd variations beyond anchovies, leading to a murderous mystery.
Most people don't even know what goes in a Caesar Salad, but it's gotten
crazy popular as well as watered down, over the years. Now it's just a creamy
dressing at McDonald's for the casual diner. Meanwhile, at its best, it is
created table-side with lots of stuff that was strange to the American
palate until the last twenty-some years. Anybody ever check out a 1960's
cookbook? Fear of garlic will waft throughout it, unless it's "ethnic". Mr. Cesar goes beyond.
