KEY WEST "BOAT KIDS" / Ten Years After Hurricane Wilma
Key West 'Boat Kids' living a dream-life aboard rundown sailboats anchored just off famous Mallory Square prior to the summer of 2005. Four hurricanes hit Key West that year. By the time the fourth, hurricane Wilma, sweeps past the liveaboard community is devastated. Nearly all boats are sunk or vanished. Some of the families have few options and settle on a nearby desert island called 'Wisteria Island' [aka Christmas Tree Island]. This is the story of this gang of 'boat kids.': Their lives before the storm, living on boats, heading to school on a water taxi, playing in the ocean and later, after the storm, their lives on the island, mixing with adults, music, creativity, and a bit of debauchery. The story centers on four of the 'gang', Nina [and sister Naomi], Alexis, Clementine, and Lani. Their remarkable talents in art, poetry, and music are highlighted, inspired by their time on the magical Wisteria Island. Now 18-21 years old their story is illustrated through old footage and interviews... A story of creativity and resilience....
