Teacher's Pet (1958)
10/10
So incredibly funny!
11 September 2009
The film stars Clark Gable, Doris Day and one of my all-time favorites, Gig Young. Mamie Van Doren also appears in a very small role.

I've seen Teacher's Pet four times since I bought it six weeks ago. Gig Young gives the films' funniest performance and got a well-deserved Oscarnomination for it. We see Clark Gable in one of his late roles and Day is as charming and conservative as ever. This movie, unlike so many other classic romantic/comedies, has a message. And a very important one at that.

Each time you watch Teacher's Pet you find something more to laugh at and you really begin to understand and appreciate the wonderful performances.

Dull Elvis vehicle: 6.5/10
8 March 2009
"Mike and Danny fly a crop duster, but because of Danny's gambling debts, a local sheriff takes custody of it. Trying to earn money, they hitch-hike to the World's Fair in Seattle. While Danny tries to earn money playing poker, Mike takes care of a small girl, Sue-Lin, whose father has disappeared. Being a ladies' man, he also finds the time to court a young nurse, Diane." Yep, here we go again... The only good song in this "musical" is One Broken Heart For Sale, and that comes pretty late in the film. Til then you'll just have to sit through it. It's not as bad as "The Trouble With Girls", but it's not as good as "Jailhouse Rock". The child actor is pretty annoying, and Elvis' character is forgettable. The "leading lady" was one of the worst he's ever had; she couldn't act, or sing or dance. She was just like standing there looking pretty. But hey, if you're an Elvis fan you'll just be happy seeing the very sight of him, but you won't enjoy the movie.

I love this movie! 9/10

"A troubled young man discovers that he has a knack for writing when a counselor encourages him to pursue a literary career." Do me a favour: Do not think of this movie as any other Elvis flick, because this is one of the best classic films I've seen. Well, he sings a couple songs to his lovers and he gets into a couple of fights, but here it just doesn't happen randomly. The plot is excellent and Elvis blew me away with his acting. There's one specific scene where he's sharing stories about his dead mother with Hope Lange and it almost brought me to tears. His acting was very natural, as was Hope Lange's, Tuesday Weld's and Millie Perkins'. This is a fantastic movie and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Amusing, but that doesn't make up for the awful plot: 6.5/10
8 March 2009
"Elvis plays Ross Carpenter, a fishing guide/sailor who loves his life out on the sea. When he finds out his boss is retiring to Arizona, he has to find a way to buy the Westwind, a boat that he and his father built. He is also caught between two women: insensitive club singer Robin and sweet Laurel." You've seen it all before; the gorgeous women, Elvis singing ridiculous songs such as Girls! Girls! Girls!, Earth Boy and Song of the Shrimp (!). But some songs are really great; Return to Sender, Because of Love and Where Do You Come From. My favorite scene is him and Laurel Goodwin (who plays Laurel Dodge) dancing the tango to The Walls Have Ears. The leading lady was adorable, but Elvis' character was forgettable and dull. I don't see this as a film any movie collector should collect because of its acting or plot, but because it's a collector's item. Anyway, don't expect a great movie, but be prepared to sing a long with the songs.

Flaming Star (1960)
7/10
Very good plot: 7.5
8 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
"Sam Burton's second wife Neddy is Indian, their son Pacer a half-breed. As struggle starts between the whites and the Kiowas, the Burton family is split between loyalties. Neddy and Sam are killed; Pacer sides with the Indians, his half-brother Clint with the whites." It's a nice change to see an Elvis movie without almost any singing for once. In this movie, the focus is not on beautiful women or the soundtrack, but the focus is on Elvis' character, Pacer, who is torn between staying with the whites, or siding with the Indians. The acting is also wonderful and believable. Bottom line is, you don't have to be an Elvis fan to see this great movie.

G.I. Blues (1960)
Very entertaining: 7.5
8 March 2009
"In Frankfurt, the G.I. Tulsa McLean (Elvis Presley) bets all the money his friends Cookie (Robert Ivers) and Rick (James Douglas) and he are saving to buy a night-club of their own in USA that his mate Dynamite will seduce and spend a night with the untouchable cabaret dancer Lili (Juliet Prowse). When Dynamite is transferred to Alaska, Tulsa has to replace him in the bet, but he falls for Lili and tries to call off the game." It's a nice plot and the acting was OK, but the best thing about this movie is the soundtrack. The songs are fun, catchy, and Elvis knows just exactly how to sing them. As do Juliet Prowse; for the first time Elvis is paired up with a leading lady who dances and is good enough to be compared with Elvis' character, Tulsa. I recommend this great musical to any Elvis fan.

One of Elvis' greatest: 8/10
7 March 2009
"It ain't tactics, honey. It's just the beast in me." Elvis is smoldering in this classic flick, and he delivers a great performance as Vince Everett; a youngster who is thrown in jail on the charges of manslaughter, and then becomes a rock star when released. Judy Tyler is wonderful, and it's a shame we lost her at such a young age. Mickey Shaughnessy gives a solid performance as Hunk Houghton, the jealous former cell mate and business partner. The soundtrack is amazing, featuring songs as Jailhouse Rock, Young And Beautiful, One More Day, Don't Leave Me Now, and my favorite, I Want To Be Free. You can't help but wonder how many other great movies like this Elvis could've made if his manager Col. Tom Parker didn't screw things up for him. Ah well, see this great movie and enjoy, because it's a one of a kind.

Wonderful acting makes this movie: 8/10
7 March 2009
"Danny Fisher, young delinquent, flunks out of high school. He quits his job as a busboy in a nightclub, and one night he gets the chance to perform. Success is imminent and the local crime boss Maxie Fields wants to hire him to perform at his night club The Blue Shade. Danny refuses, but Fields won't take no for an answer..." Awesome plot, great acting and a brooding Elvis is what makes this film a classic, a mix of crime, drama and musical. This is Elvis' greatest movie so far, well it's a tie between this and Jailhouse Rock, and he is amazing as Danny Fisher, the young delinquent who gets mixed up with crook Maxie Fields (the incredible Walter Matthau) and the lovely Carolyn Jones. This is probably the one movie where all leading, and supporting, actors give great performances all over. It's a must see for any Elvis (or classic film) fan. And I promise, you won't regret it.

Nice start at Elvis' career: 7.5/10
7 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
"Vance, I didn't mean it! I swear I didn't mean it!" This was a pretty nice start at Elvis' career, spanning over 30 films. His first film performance was good, not great and not bad, just good. One problem was that he and Debra Paget, who played Cathy Reno, lacked chemistry. I actually found the rest of the actors in this films pretty boring and forgettable, but I think it was made that way so the focus would be on the rising star at that time, Elvis Presley. The ending was actually my favorite part of the movie, where Clint (Presley) has just been shot and he begs of forgiveness to his brother. It's pretty sad, really. Anyway, you should definitely watch this film, but don't expect a masterpiece of some sort.

Loving You (1957)
Okay, but forgettable Elvis flick: 7/10
7 March 2009
"Deke Rivers is a delivery man who is discovered by publicist Glenda Markle and country-western musician Tex Warner who want to promote the talented newcomer to fame and fortune, giving him every break he deserves. Romantic complications arise as Susan, another singer in the group, offers him devoted admiration as Glenda leads him on with promises of a golden future." Pretty decent plot as you can see, and the performances were pretty OK. The chemistry between Elvis and Lizabeth Scott was great, as was the chemistry between Scott and Wendell Corey, who plays Tex. It was a good movie, but it didn't have the excitement or the charisma as "Love Me Tender", the film Elvis made the year before. But I recommend it to any classic film fan.

Grant's and Kerr's performances make this already sweet and charming movie even better.
28 December 2007
A couple of months ago I was watching "Sleepless In Seattle", and one of the main things in this movie was the similarity and constant talking about the 50's classic "An Affair To Remember". So I told myself to go see it. A couple months later I saw it. I wasn't that surprised over the fact that it was really good: I always knew on some level... My first Cary Grant movie was, I think, one of the funniest and most romantic movies of the old 50's, and he was actually really good, considering this is a "light" movie, so to speak. And Deborah Kerr (I had only first heard of her when I was watching "Sleepless") was truly wonderful and charming. She could hide that accent of hers great, although when she was singing you could hear the Scottish accent a bit better. It's OK. It only made the song better!

The plot wasn't the simple "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy girl get married...", this was different: Boy meets girl, girl sets an appointment for six months later, girl gets in an accident and finally: boy gets girl, and perhaps marry! The whole way to "boy, girl get married" was different and I liked that.

The music was really good (it had a lot music considering it wasn't a musical). Kerr had a great and calm voice, so she made the soundtrack and the songs better than they already were.

So, the acting was great, the plot was great, the music was great... This is a great movie! But the reason why I'm giving it a 9 instead of a 10 was because of the ending. I kinda liked it, it was different, but at the same time it felt a bit empty. But that is no reason not to watch it, you might love the ending!

Apollo 13 (I) (1995)

Really Exciting
8 December 2007
This movie is what I call an exciting, action-packed, almost great movie. It's not really amazing or classic, but it was far better than what I had expected (my naive sister said it sucked!). When I watched it alone I was very entertained by the really great special effects and, believe it or not, the acting. It was definitely not Oscar material, but still good enough... Tom Hanks is a delight to watch and he plays his role great, and along with Bill Paxton, Kevin Bacon, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris he shines brighter. But I was also impressed with Harris and Sinise. They were good.

Anyway, watch this movie and be entertained. It's really a great movie!

Hey, did you know that Gary Sinise has starred in three Tom Hanks movies? Apollo 13, Forrest Gump and my all time favorite movie The Green Mile.

Desperate Housewives: Something's Coming (2007)
Season 4, Episode 9

Incredible episode!
3 December 2007
Some of my favorite episodes have lots and lots of secret revealing, action and gossip! But this is by far the greatest episode, in my opinion, in the history of DH. The best thing was that the episode started out by saying: "One wife is gonna lose a husband. And four wives are gonna lose a friend...". Really awesome way to begin an episode. I won't tell you what's gonna happen, i'll let you watch it yourselves, but I can recommend it to any and every DH-fan. If there is something a bit annoying about this episode it was the new character, Sylvia, who the Mayfair's knew from Chicago. I just wanted to strangle her every time she opened her mouth!

This is my first review on an episode in a show, hope I did good!

What a great movie!
22 November 2007
Roy Earle is a convicted bank robber, not afraid to kill. He gets thrown to jail and after 8 years he gets released. He comes to work with a couple of noobies and their woman, named Marie. But, Earle falls for a young woman named Velma. She is crippled and Earle pays for her operation, only to find that she doesn't really love him. Earle then realizes that he loves Marie so he buys her a ring and they get married. The ending was also really good and touching, and the whole movie was just awesome. This is the movie that proved Bogie could be in leading roles, the thing he was born for. I highly recommend this beautifully played film to everyone, knowing that all the Bogie fans will love it just as much as I do.

No secret...
18 November 2007
There is no secret that Bogart made a lot of bad movies throughout his career, such as, oh, lets say "Sirocco". He said it himself! But there is also no secret that he is one of the greatest actors ever in history of film and that he made his share of unforgettable and great films like "Casablanca" or even the ones less famous, such as "In A Lonely Place". He is my favorite actor ever. And I am so happy that his last film was well acted and had an awesome story. Rod Steiger was also good in this historical boxing picture, with the large Mike Lane and some of the other less famous actors. But no matter what, Bogart owns this film, just as he seems to own all the other films he ever played in. Except from "The Raging Bull" (which I saw years ago!) this is the best boxing film I've seen! The fights were really well made and the "injuries" were believable and it really looked like they were bleeding or that they were really bad injured. I would say that this has about everything a great film needs, that includes Bogart. Once again, so glad this film, his last, was one of his absolute best!

What the hell?!
16 November 2007
What!? I had heard so many awesome stuff about this film, but none of it were true. I hated it. It was not as scary as everyone say (that includes my own father) but just horribly acted and bad. The story was kinda weird and strange and extremely claustrophobic but what can I say... I just didn't enjoy it! I do not think that I'm the only one who hates this film. There are a lot of people who liked it, and that's OK. Everyone has the right to think whatever they want, but I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone. + None of the actors who played in Saw were famous or even just a little famous! Except for Danny Glover, whom I don't really like... If you think you might like it, then watch it! But don't expect a masterpiece...

Thanks

Nice romantic comedy but a little empty so to speak
15 November 2007
No matter what movie Meryl Streep plays in, she plays it good. Really good. Uma Thurman is also wonderful and she can act, at least good enough. This was the first time I saw Bryan Greenberg and he was good too. So this far you have learned that the acting was good. OK, lets continue.

The film is about a newly divorced woman who ends up meeting a 14 years younger guy who she really likes. But then, it turns out that he is the son of her shrink. A really neurotic shrink! So, there are complications and problems throughout the film but nothing really special. Sometimes funny but most of all pretty ordinary. So my advice to you is that you can see it just for some fun, but don't expect something great. Although Meryl Streep was awesome.

Key Largo (1948)

Bogie & Bacall Classic!
14 November 2007
What an awesome film! I just feel so lucky to have seen this little piece of movie history. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were the greatest couple ever, and throughout their career they made 4 movies with each other: To Have And Have not, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo. Personally I have only seen The Big Sleep and Key Largo, and if I have to choose a favorite then it would probably be The Big Sleep, because it has more Noir, which I like, but Key Largo is a great film too! The story is basically that an ex-soldier or something comes to visit the family of a passed away soldier friend in Florida. The widower and the soldier starts having feelings for each other, but then they find out that a gangster sort type boss has taken over the hotel the family owns and that with the help of his "men" they take the family hostage. And all in the middle of this, a horrible storm comes along, causing panic and fear in the sizzling Florida Keys!! The tension and the drama in this film is really something special... It's real! I would recommend this fourtys classic to anyone, knowing that other people will love it as much as I did. So take a little time and go see Key Largo. You won't regret it! I think...

Sirocco (1951)
Hard to explain...
14 November 2007
SIROCCO is a film which has gotten mixed reviews, or at least mostly bad reviews. And they are right. My favorite Bogie films (or at least the ones I've seen) are IN A LONELY PLACE, CASABLANCA, THE BIG SLEEP and a couple more. And they have the right to be called "classics". Or even by some, "masterpieces". But SIROCCO doesn't get that chance because, well, it's really nothing special. Being a huge Bogie-fan, I was disappointed when the movie ended and I felt that person who can be referred as "supporting role" was Bogie. Being the superstar that he was, he should have been able to be in the film a little more. I wouldn't advise anyone to not see this film. OK, see it. But don't expect a masterpiece, or even a great movie cause' it's not, unfortunately. the acting and the whole black/white thing were the only good things. But, hey, I would advise IN A LONELY PLACE to anyone, anytime, anywhere. So don't get your hopes up for SIROCCO, instead go rent/buy IN A LONELY PLACE, because that is a film worth calling a classic. Hope I helped.

Powerful drama with powerful Jane
31 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This was nothing like I've seen before, and it really got to me. To see how those poor people suffered for days and days, just because of some money. The performances from the whole cast was good but Lady Jane's performance was superb. She played the aggressive, angry but strong woman who, with the help of Sarrazin, commits suicide. The great Sydney Pollack proves that he once again can make movies that people care about and feel. It was the same with Out Of Africa. This film is sensitive and if you are gonna watch it, then be prepared to see something you have never seen before. The depression could really make people do some crazy things. Thanks

Pretty awesome sequel
30 October 2007
Personally, I prefer vol. 1, but this is a pretty awesome movie too. The action was good, or at least the only action scene, which was when Kiddo was fighting with Elle Driver and ripped here eye out... OK... The dialogs and the witty script just screamed out Quentin Tarantino, and it's just pure enjoyment watching the films of the perhaps coolest dude on earth. The cast was great too. I mean what can go possibly wrong when you have Uma Thurman, Darryl Hannah, Lucy Lieu, David Carradine, Vivica A. Fox and Michael Madsen? The only sort of bad thing was seeing Madsen 15 years later than Reservoir ¨Dogs, because there he was mysterious, cool, well a killer, and oh, yes.. hot! He's become an old and fat fart! Yeah, it has been 15 years... But still, some people age good and some bad. But he should really start taking care of himself... The special-effects were awesome and I totally enjoyed watching them.

I recommend this film to all the Tarantino lovers out there (although I doubt that if you really love him you've already seen this film) but don't expect anything from Madsen. Cause if you do... you'll be really disappointed. Thanks.

Divine decadence darling!

What a charming film. A true feel-good movie. Since I saw this movie, Liza Minelli has become one of my favorites. She's so sweet and I think she really deserved her Oscar. It's a shame Michael York didn't get nominated. He was almost as good as Liza. But the real character actor in this magnificent film has got to be Joel Gray. His dancing, singing and his funny faces was the best. He really deserved the credit (and the Oscar) for his role. Even though it's a wonderful film, it's still a bit strange but that's just fascinating. You never get to see any weird films lately. All of the new films has no magic. I truly recommend this beautiful film to everyone. It's got singing, dancing and the special Liza Minelli and the charming Michael York. What else do you need in a musical?? Thanks

Easy Oscars?
28 October 2007
I think not! I mean yeah if you compare this film to The Godfather, or maybe a little older film like Casablanca, or maybe even a little newer film like The English Patient. It doesn't have the camera work or the cinematography like these other films, but that doesn't mean that this is a bad movie, or does it? I think the reason why this film is underrated is because a lot of people always compare it to other great Oscar winning films (you should never do that) which makes it hard to understand the beauty and the realism in this movie. In the categories Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, this film really deserved all of them. The magnificent Dustin Hoffman gives us, once again, one of his best performances. A couple of times in this movie I forgot that it wasn't his son because it was just so real! I have never seen a film about relationships in different families where it was so easy for the actors to play that specific role but still so beautiful. So Dustin Hoffman passes the test with flying colors, in my opinion. There are a few actresses in the world who deserve to be called the best: Katherine Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda and Ingrid Bergman (I can't help it, I think she's great). Meryl Streep, even though she's in a supporting role, is amazing and real and you just can't help but being drawn ed to her talent and the way she makes it hers and real. Wow, that's all I can say. Justin Henry was great considering his age, his tears and his relationship with his mom and dad was beautiful, so I say good job to cute little Justin Henry.

While I was watching this film for like the third time, alone, I couldn't stop crying. I tried but I couldn't. Thank god I was alone! This is probably the purest film I have ever seen. Other films that were nominated for Best Picture was Apocalypse Now, Norma Rae, Breaking Away and All That Jazz. I'm ashamed, cause I haven't seen any of them, but from what I've heard, Apocalypse Now is great but when I heard about Norma Rae I only thought of Sally Field. I think that considering the other nominees, this film deserved it's five Oscars, and that it'll continue to touch and make other people cry for a long time in the future, just like it has for the past 28 years. Good job all the actors and actresses in this film for giving us great performances and memories from watching this film that we won't ever forget.

Thanks for your time.

A beautiful love story about a love story
25 October 2007
This is a beautiful film. It's really sad, at the end, but the film is so great that it doesn't matter. Like almost every movies the film has some flaws but that is overwhelmed by the story and the acting. Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw (I wonder what she did after this film) make a perfect pair as the young couple who falls in love, gets married and goes through something hard when the young girl dies at the age of 25 or 26 or something. That's the only really sad thing in this glorious film. I recommend it to everyone who loves a great love story but don't concentrate a lot about the flaws, because this is a really good movie, so it shouldn't be over looked because of the tiny flaws. Thanks.

The Hours (2002)

Different. Very, very different.
25 October 2007
This is a weird, different film. But the story, the cinematography and the acting was superb. Meryl Streep is great and so is Nicole Kidman, who I really think deserved her Oscar. Julianne Moore got nominated for an Oscar, but didn't win. Catherine Zeta-Jones won instead, which I think is wrong, Julianne Moore was a lot better than her.

The movie in itself was strange, but the way the camera work was handled made the whole film beautiful and enjoyable. Lots of the time I think that great movies don't exist after the 21 century, but this film proves me wrong. The scene were Julianne Moore is at her hotel and there is water flooding the room is awesome. Really well made.

I recommend this film to all the movie-lovers and the people who don't concentrate on the flaws because if you over look this film then you won't enjoy it as much as you really should, because this is close to a masterpiece.
