Kala Pani (1996)
malayalam version of schindler's list
I can not give full mark to this movie even though it was one of the movie which can be considered as in a Hollywood flavour .Kaalapani is the first movie in Malayalam, recorded in "Dolby Stereo SR" (The tamil version of this film is released in DTS .But original malayalam version and Hindi version used "Dolby stereo SR" only ) . The sound effects are awesome. But we can see the scenes of some famous Hollywood films in this movie such as directly copied.
Eg , 1. The hero (Mohan Lal) and second hero (Prabhu ) are caught by tribals in Andaman. They are kept inside a big tub (a wooden tub half of which poured water ) .They tries to rescue themselves from there . All these sequence can be seen in the Hollywood film "King Solomon's mine" ( if my memory is right ) .
2. ALl the other scenes (yes, almost 70% scenes in andaman) can be scene in the Oscar winning film "Schindler's List " . I think the director Priyadarshan is very much impressed by this Spielberg movie. Even the conclusion of the film is just same as "Schindler's List" .
Ilaya raja has given some beautiful songs again. Also back ground music is remarkable. Santhosh Sivan has done excellent photography in the film .
This movie is directed by Joshey Mathew .Not "Joshy" who directed films like "Nair sab" and recent "Naran" and "Lion" .
The film is meant for children ,but unfortunately children may not find this movie as at least a time pass movie . A movie which have a couple of children in its cast , can not be considered as a children movie. This film is a best example for that. The film was supposed to be a colorful one . But it is not. As a debutant director , Joshey Mathew has done a good job .Since the film lacks some elements somewhere. Overall the film can be rated as a watchable movie . At least a 10% of spectators might have misunderstood the director as the well known director "Joshy". But once they watched the movie ,they could easily make out the person is different.
The film has so many draw backs. After all it seems the film is taken only with the purpose that to introduce Dolby digital in Malayalam's for the first time. The sound is recorded well with the aid of Dolby digital system. But the film lacks all the other good elements which a good film needs. There is not a fare story outline. The film is full of gunshots and stunts. Another think is that it seems KK Haridas trying to make keralites aware of the computer technologies and internet. Its good to some extend as the film released in 1996, most people wouldn't have any idea of those things. But we don't forget that before that ,director Shankar has introduced the same techniques in Indian ,in a good way.
My Dear Kuttichaathan (1984)
first DTS in Malayalam
This film has been released again in 1997 with some new sequences. That version is the first DTS film in Malayalam and also the first DTS 3D film in India. It has another record already that it is the first 3D film in India when released in 1984. The second version is excellent in its sound effects and computer graphics. A best entertainer and an excellent movie experience for all type of spectators. The film is mainly intended for children. In technical aspects, the film is high standard comparing to other Malayalam movies of the same period. Jijo who already proved as an excellent technician by his earlier hits like Padyottam ,has done a great effort to make this film. Overall the film has a flavor of Hollywood fantasy film.
