The following is a list of winners of my mythical and elusive SFF award for best film - ‘The Rusty Coathanger’. I am awarding the prize from the year that corresponds with the first award that the Sydney Film Festival issued in 2008. Official winners for comparative purposes are provided below each entrant. My options are not confined to the pool of nominees that the festival provides; all films that I have viewed during the season’s festival are considered.

No Gordon. No Alfred. No Wayne.

I’ve opted for an opulent, highly stylised, costume-dependant, limited to 90 minutes, retelling of Batman to differentiate the new film from the previous filmic incarnations. Here, the fantastic will make the recent realistic slant preferred by Nolan obsolete. The story will unfold in vignettes; with Batman hunting down each and every one of his nemeses.

Immediately on from the credits, the narrator - anchoring the film to fantasy - will guide our journey from Etchison to Abattoir. We're focused on a world coloured by the crimsons and reds of hate and vengeance. Upon Batman's triumph, we are thrust into the queer and quaint world of the nomadic circus folk, where the rather crazed and seductive Harley Quinn has designs for Batman (I’m completely reseting her backstory). Their compelled/repelled dynamic is explored. Finally, with our most penetrative look at Gotham, we find a city being terrorised by none other than… Batman?

Say what you will about Tarsem, but I look forward to seeing Batman emerge from a blackened wall with his volumised cape draped all over the scene in Tarsem’s inimitable style. Afford him his liberties.

In order of priority, these are the films that have piqued my interest at this year’s festival. I intend to see about half a dozen.
