A fun, light series that's very enjoyable.
18 April 2020
The artwork, animation and soundtrack are very well done. There's nothing complicated about the storyline, and no deep character development or emotional scenes. It's sweet, light and funny, and I couldn't stop grinning while watching it. Maple's antics are so far-fetched that it's absurd, but you can't help but root for her.

Young Justice (2010–2023)

Young Justice is back!
15 January 2019
After years of waiting, DC's Young Justice animated series is back for a third season. Picking up the story not long after the events of Season 2, the third season expands the team further by introducing the Outsiders. An epidemic of metahuman trafficking has the world on edge, and tensions within the Justice League are at an all-time high. With the League compromised, it's up to Dick Grayson, M'gann M'orzz and the young heroes of the YJ Team to pick up the slack and get to the bottom of the criminal activity before more kids fall victim. The season starts off with great energy and it's good to see our favourite DC characters back in action. The tone is somewhat more serious than previous seasons, but interspersed with genuine humour, charming scenes, and exciting action. Any fan of the DC Universe will love this series.

Titans: Titans (2018)
Season 1, Episode 1

Looks promising.
22 October 2018
Like many people I was put off by the trailer (a horrible representation of this show) but decided to give it a chance. I'm glad I did, though I'm still not quite sure what to think about it.

For what it is, it's a great first episode. The acting is phenomenal, and I love the actors' representations especially of Raven and Starfire/Koriand'r, whose confusion and amnesia was palpable. I can't wait to see how Raven's story develops. Robin (Dick Grayson, newly fallen out with Batman and on his own in Detroit) is a much different character from how he's been portrayed before. In the comics, Dick is quiet and serious, but with a cheerful and compassionate bent. There's none of that here, except in his fierce protectiveness of young Raven.

I think that's the main thing that gave me pause. Titans isn't pulling any punches. If you're expecting the warm, humorous "weekend club for teenage superheros" atmosphere from the comics, prepare to be shocked. This first episode is brutal and gory. It has a high body count (yes, most of those are killed by the Titans) and the violence doesn't show any sign of letting up.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about that. I like dark and gritty, but I feel like this show may be going a touch overboard for the shock value. Regardless, I'm looking forward to the next episode and will be interested to see what comes.

The Flash: Nora (2018)
Season 5, Episode 1

Hits the ground running!
15 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Season 5 is off to a great start! Even longtime fans of CW's The Flash have had to admit that the show has lacked something in the last couple of seasons, but with this first episode, it feels like we're right back where we should be.

Expertly combining action (the plane sequence was amazing) drama and naturally funny moments, this episode had a lot going on but it was a joy to watch. We properly meet Nora for the first time and find out just how and why she's in the past. She really seems to be an "Impulse" character, even in her personality. Impulse aka Bart Allen was always one of my very favourite characters from the DC comics, so I'm really glad to see him brought to life in Nora. The episode is full of easter eggs for DC fans and fond flashbacks of previous years. I watched on Netflix and paused on Nora's new future article in the time vault. Lots of juicy easter eggs there. Can't wait to see what the rest of Season 5 brings!

The Flash: Duet (2017)

Worth a Smile
8 June 2018
So I've really been enjoying the Flash, but most of this season has been pretty heavy and depressing. I know a lot of people don't like this episode, but I loved it! It's fun to see the familiar characters singing and dancing (very well!) in a musical, and the "Super Friend" song brought a real smile to my face, as well as the sweet scene between Barry and Iris at the end.

It's a superhero show. Sure. But a light, sweet episode like this comes as a welcome relief here and there, and they did an excellent job of it.

Legion: Chapter 14 (2018)
Season 2, Episode 6

"What could have been"
10 May 2018
I have to admit I've been pretty disappointed with Season 2 so far. It's been pretty straight-up, superheroish, and coarse. I've felt disconnected from the characters I came to care about in Season 1.

This episode changed all that. It brought us right back to the beautiful non-linear, psychological style of the first season, and did it arguably even better.

"YOU decide what is real and what is not. Your will." Immediately after finding out that his sister's body has been hijacked by the Shadow King for Lenny, we have a glimpse into David's mind as he searches through infinite realities to find something better, for him and his beloved sister. The possibilities range from a homeless man to a suburban dad to the most powerful man on earth. Most, if not all, end in tragedy - if not for David, then for those he cares about most. The Shadow King is always there, lurking in the background, turning David's powers against the world.

In the split second that he visits all these realities and lives all these lives, David seems to come to the conclusion that the course he is on is the best one. Like Syd's maze earlier, he's stepped back, taken a look at his life - and all that might have been - and is poised to come up fighting.

New Classic X-Files
10 May 2018
This smart, funny MOTW episode is right up there with other Darin Morgan episodes from the early seasons. It manages to bend genres hilariously while still dealing with a variety of serious topics.

So Mulder's in the middle of some kind of mid-life crisis. Bored with his work, fed up with monsters, driving Scully crazy with his complaints. Duchovny is at the top of his game.

Putting Mulder's personal problems in perspective, he's introduced to a disgruntled monster with problems of his own. The Were-Monster is charming and funny, and somehow sympathetic. The twist ending wasn't entirely novel, and I suspected it right from the beginning, but the way events played out still kept me engaged right through the episode.

It's modern X-Files for a new audience, complete with fairly rectangular smartphones, but longtime fans will recognize references to various classic episodes in a nostalgic self-spoof that manages to rank right up there with the best of the best.

The X-Files: Closure (2000)
Season 7, Episode 11

Into Starlight
5 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, it seems like this is an episode you either love or hate. After seven years we're deeply invested in Mulder's search for his sister and his desperate hope to find her alive, so the "closure" we find in this episode feels empty in a way.

But it's beautifully done. I don't entirely understand the concept of Walk-Ins, but the idea that there is a force that plucks innocent children from the grasp of a terrible fate and transforms them into pure starlight is one of the loveliest images from all of the X-Files - and accompanied by one of the most amazing songs.

According to the facts unearthed in this episode, Samantha's original abduction really did happen, but she was returned shortly after - to the CSM, who kept her hidden for several years along with his own son Jeffrey (did Agent Spender not remember this?) while the Syndicate continued to perform tests on her. At age 14 she ran away and ended up in the hospital, where she disappeared into thin air the night before the CSM arrived to kill her.

This episode doesn't answer all our questions, but it is a worthy send-off to Samantha Mulder and an end to Fox Mulder's quest in a way that brings as much hope as it does sadness. His fight for the truth isn't over, but now his objective will be not to find his sister but to right the wrongs done to her.
