I was once told by an English professor that one of the greatest crimes in Narrative writing is 'And then I woke up and it was all just a dream'. The purgatory state is the new waking up from a dream for the 21st century (see Ashes To Ashes for plagiaristic reference) Although well wrapped up, it was still a cheap cop-out and did not give the Lost Fans who did want answers to the Sci-Fi questions any real substance to get their teeth into. No, we don't want spoon feeding everything but the whole topic of the island was effectively skirted over in favour of 'It doesn't matter because it was all about finding each other ad the human condition'.... This is NOT a bad thing - but it should not be the ONLY thing.
People have argued we should not be concerned about these Sci-Fi facts and should concentrate on the drama of the relationships and how a broken individual can find their way with the help of close friends. True it is an integral part of lost but so was the fantastical stuff that separated it from being pure melodrama - the likes of which I can watch in a Soap Opera. Indeed I daresay there would be a lost less fans if it wasn't for the supernatural element of the series.
A good ending? I'm not sure. But we definitely deserved more.
