The Cuckoo Patrol (1967)
Made for Children
I cannot understand all the damming reviews here - by adults.
This is a children's film, so of course adults are not going to necessarily find it funny. My 8 year old son really enjoyed it - in the same slapstick way I enjoyed Punch and Judy as a kid. There are quite a few famous faces in this film, and I thought it was well put together as a sort of loony/panto mish mash children's comedy.
I would rather they watched this than some of the dark and disturbing rubbish thats put on today!
Lease of Life (1954)
Great 1950s English Tale
Great acting by Robert Donat who one could see was clearly not well (a less than kind contributor mentioned he looked aged). The story itself a familiar plot of a dying man making the most of the time left. However beautifully done against the backdrop of village life in 1950s England, with a vicar faced with choosing between that which is expected of him and that which his heart and his faith demand. A spoilt daughter and a supportive though somewhat demanding wife who turns out to be quite vulnerable keeps the interest afloat. The characters in the village and the twists and turns of the tale make this a film well worth watching.
If you prefer stories about life rather than spectacular action, depiction of morals and values against big budget drama and reality over fantasy then this should keep you entertained for the duration.
Great shots of Beverley Minster and clever camera work I thought for what was probably a fairly low budget affair.
Motherland (2016)
Refreshingly good
I'm not an avid TV viewer but having watched the first episode on Catch-up we then watched the other 5. I would describe this as a cross between Gavin and Stacey and Bridget Jones. I thought it was very well thought out as far as the situation, plot and characterization was concerned and it was nice to see less famous actors in the roles doing a terrific job of comedy combined with those "cringe moments" you might find in The Office or Gavin and Stacey. Anyone who has ever had children will relate to this and will have experienced the characters involved, obviously caricatured and comedicly enhanced for the show. Overall I thought it was extremely entertaining and would be most surprised if it did not get a second series. Certainly streets ahead of some of the other rubbish on TV these days. I look forward to series two.
