Cabin Fever (2002)
"Cabin Fever" is truly a HORRENDOUS movie..a comedy/horror?? It was neither funny nor frightening. Five college kids go on a vacation/break to an isolated cabin to live it up before facing "real" life and are struck by a killer flesh eating disease...I actually wished they would all die so unlikeable were they. If you want to see teenagers dieing at the hands of a malevolent foe ,go rent "Jeepers Creepers 2" which is a masterpiece compared to this overblown tripe. I'm sorry I feel like this about "Cabin fever" as I generally give movies I watch a chance but I HATED every thing about this...sorry Mr Roth but this film sucks. 3/10 the three is for "Pancake kid's" kung fu routine and the partying deputy....PMSL.
A great comedy/thriller that for anybody (like myself) with the title phobia will have them hiding behind the sofa especially the climactic battle! John Goodman is hilarious as the Exterminator ("I'm bad!").. Julian Sands excellent as the lead insect and spider expert..and Jeff Daniels great as the new doctor in town...But the star of the show has to be the disgustingly eight legged star in all its hairy and screamingly crawly glory. I couldn't sleep properly after this movie but that hasn't stopped me watching it again and again until I could view it without crying like a little girl!!...I'll beat my fear of spiders one day!! 8/10!!!! A fantastic little film.
The Descent (2005)
I appreciate everyones right to their own opinion about this film "The Descent" but have to disagree with the majority..this movie was nothing more than an average horror film with average acting and average "frights" . I LOVED "Dog Soldiers" its mix of black humour and shocks worked really very well and the acting was great. I was actually really disappointed as everyone I know who'd seen it said it was FANTASTIC...what did I miss? Was I watching a different movie..this was nothing special at all and maybe worthy for renting out on DVD if there are no copies of the likes of "Saw" on the rental shelves. I say this is a distinctly average 5/10 nothing less and nothing more. Sorry guys!
"Saw" is one of those movies that stays with you for ages after viewing it-so good is it I re watched it straight away! It grips from the opening scene where the two main characters find themselves chained at opposite ends of the bathroom from hell. To me personally there is a flawless performance from Australian actor Leigh Whannel who actually made me laugh out loud with his angry and sarcastic portrayal of "Adam" alongside a lesser performance from Cary Elwes who's character "Dr Lawrence Gordon" was a touch ham-fisted with a side salad of overacting but was still powerful.
The scene with the reverse bear trap on Amanda ( the gorgeous Shawnee Smith) has to be one of the most memorable I've seen in a horror movie for some time. Although the film reminded me of that other gem "Seven" I actually thought it was creepier. The ending is a fantastic twist which I defy ANYONE to say that they had guessed beforehand. In all this movie is a must-see for anybody interested in original , terrifying psychologically driven horror film-making TEN/TEN!!!
Cold Creek Manor (2003)
Run from those snakes!!
I just HAD to switch this film off as it had literally sent me to sleep!! I cant emphasise just how BAD this movie is or how cliché ridden...SHAME on you Mike Figgis! It could have been saved had a supernatural element been thrown into the mix..that might have explained away the truly funny snake attack scene..I mean COME ON the family were running about like the Keystone cops trying to evade around SIX synchronised supposedly deadly snakes planted around the house by Mr Dorff. The scene was so overacted it was funny. I rate Dennis Quaid as an actor and always thought he doesn't receive the recognition he deserves...now I know why!!! He and Sharon Stone were just going through the motions. This movie was a mish mash of The Amityville Horror without the demons and bits of Hicks-Hate-City-Slickers movies like Deliverence with a splash of Pacific Heights. AVOID THIS MOVIE AT ALL COSTS!!!
Open Water (2003)
I found this movie really moving as the couple...Dan and Susan endured for what to me is one of my innermost fears and a recurrent nightmare (no!! really!!)...being stranded in the middle of the ocean with no sight of land and god only knows what lurking under the surface...be it jellyfish or marauding sharks. The way the film is shot added to the whole experience being very personal and although I disliked Susan and her wealthy spoilt childlike ways .. I soon felt very empathic towards the couple as time ticked by. It must have been terrifying. The comparison with Jaws and The Blair Witch does this film no favours whatsoever as to me its a totally different type of film...all are good in their own ways. The acting was a tad wooden at times but casting two unknowns I think paid off and added to the realism of the experience. My vote is 8 for a completely unique film ... go rent it with an open mind.
Wrong Turn (2003)
You're the one who ought to take care....
"Wrong Turn" was everything I expected and more..a mishmash of stylings from "Deliverence" "Texas chainsaw Massacre" and others this was a throwback to when horror movies were exactly that HORROR MOVIES! It was gripping from beginning to end and the shrieking main antagonist hillbilly cannibal played by Julian Richings was a work of genius. Desmond Harrington plays a great hero role with Eliza Dushku at her feisty best. Jeremy Sisto adds some great comic relief as well The scene in the hillbillie's cabin was one of the most suspenseful I've watched in a long while and I found myself caring and rooting for the good guys.Sure it has its "I cant believe they are gonna do that" moments but they are few and far between. I'd recommend this to anyone who detests the "Scream" franchise and its ilk and those who like films with characters/victims that you actually give a hell whether they live or die...8/10 BRILLIANT!
Oh dear.....1 out of 10 isn't low enough
I prepared to watch this movie with an open heart...surely it couldn't be as bad as people have said..and I can now truly say IT IS!! A blatant rip-off of "Ringu" or "Ring" it started off with a little promise and a bit of suspense but then ran headfirst into absolute drivel. The haunting little girl was exactly NOT that..but a cute little five year old or so with a ball stolen from "Prisoner" and she made an appearance in the first two minutes to my bemusement. The acting was terrible ..the script overly corny and well the only upside was a half decent score. "The Doctor" was a flagrant clone of a poor mans Hannibal Lecter as has been mentioned by umpteen reviewers. To be honest I switched the film off after an hour as the tedium was enough to make MY eyes bleed. Question...why did the guy who ran off with the German couples video camera continue filming as he was running away..hahaha little lapses like this littered the film...a bad bad bad bad film made by people who couldn't care less... 1 out of ten isn't low enough..AVOID THIS FILM LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!
Jeepers Creepers II (2003)
Didn't hold my attention...
Hmmmm I watched this on satellite last night and well I was to say the least a little disappointed..a bus full of High School kids coming home from a basketball game are immobilised then stalked by "The Creeper" who seems to have a penchant for male body parts.. is this the first homosexual horror demon? Joking aside this movie bored me..I didn't even sit through the whole movie as "Cabin fever" was on...my god THAT was even worse!!! A few decent jump moments do not a horror make ..I personally would rather care about the characters being stalked but in this there was little or no characterisation...however Leland Palmer from twin Peaks firing a post stamper at the monster was worth chortle value at least. A below average sequel to a mediocre original...
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Its alright I suppose....
I watched this movie last night expecting some form of departure from the first in the series and I was fairly disappointed. The action set pieces were mostly cut so fast and lighted in such a way it was hard to actually see what was going on.... The Nemesis creature was fairly laughable at times ..as was the rescue of several of the main characters by Alice astride a motorbike. The ending was abysmal and unless there is a real change in form I doubt I'll be looking forward too much to the third film... If its an action movie which borrows from Tomb Raider via Dawn Of The dead you are looking for than I suppose this film is quite simply..Alright..nothing more.
