Sigh, what could have been
15 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Just got back from the theater, so this will probably more of a ramble as I process than a well written review

The number one feeling I have right now is disappointment; plan and simply. There were so many different places they could have taken the characters, but they chose the most mundane and "safe" plots.

The real problem is that there is no emotional "cost" to be paid in any of the plots in the film. Things need to go bad - even good people die (actual people we care about, not the endless "good guys" who die in the battles!) - in order to have any sort of emotional mountaintop experience. When that one character (don't want to spoil) is in a position to Independence Day himself to give his life to help the others, I was super happy that was happening just because it was going to MEAN something - it was a COST paid for the others to live; but no, he is saved at the last moment and I even so I thought for sure the person who saved him was going to end up being the one to pay the "cost" - but no, that person lives too!!!!!!

I felt the only reason they didn't kill of that character in that moment was because then they could no longer sell action figures and any other memorabilia with that characters face on it. That was the only good reason I could think of.

As everyone else has already said, the Snoke thing is a complete joke - farce.

I feel like Star Wars died today.

Reynolds and Jackson were born for this moment
9 August 2017
Wow, I was so impressed with this movie. I will admit that the first 20 minutes were pretty generic for me and I found myself thinking, "This is pretty much what I expected, but it's a free screening so just enjoy it." However, once Reynolds and Jackson team up on the screen the entire chemistry of the movie changes and it ended up being one of the funnest "buddy cop" movies I've seen in quite a while. (I know it technically isn't a buddy cop movie, but it really is for all intents and purposes.) The movie doesn't take itself seriously (were you really expecting that with Reynolds and Jackson?!), and just like any modern action/comedy the plot isn't meant to be something like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. This movie is 100% worth spending the cash to go see in the theater with a group of people. I can also tell you this, the atmosphere leaving the theater was great; this movie is a lot of fun!

CHIPS (2017)
Peaks and Valleys
24 March 2017
Sometimes I have a hard time rating movies, and more specifically comedies. Because comedies generally try to do nothing other than make you laugh, it's easier to let plot and character development (etc) slide, as you might not with other genres of movies. This is the typical R rated comedy of this day and age - over the top, raunchy comedy that focuses mostly on human anatomy jokes. If you hate those movies, avoid it at all costs. If you like them, then you'll probably like this.

At the screening I saw this at just about everyone after the film was talking about how they liked it, and there was certainly a lot of laughter in the theater throughout the movie.

This movie had a few moments of truly laugh out loud hilarity, outside of those few moments the rest of the comedy was there, but it was pretty generic.

Look, you know what type of movie this is (raunchy comedy). If you go to the theater and drop your $ and don't like it, that's on you.

John Wick meets Good Will Hunting
13 October 2016
It's as if John Wick is the savant janitor from Good Will Hunting, and surprisingly, it worked.

What should you expect? It has flashes of John Wick action, but it most certainly isn't an all out action movie, however, it also isn't primarily a drama focusing on his autistic/accounting side of things; I felt they did a really good job of combining both elements into a movie that swings back and forth between the two.

I thought the acting was great all around; I found the plot solid and enjoyable.

Here is the bottom line: Yes, this movie is worth your money to see in the theater.

p.s. I'll be the first to admit I have no idea how autism really affects people and how accurate it is or is not portrayed in this movie; I saw this movie as nothing more than what it is: a fictional story to entertain.

One Hell of a Ride
19 September 2016
Finally another great western movie!

To be sure, all the western clichés are found in this movie; and I don't have a problem with that! One of the things I liked best about this western was the pacing, sometimes I find westerns to be a little too slow (for my personal taste - subjective, I know) but I felt this movie nailed it, even with a run time a little over 2 hours.

The action scenes are great, very well done. The casting and acting was great - Denzel does a great job as the leader of this rag tag group of guys. Pratt, of course, nails the comedic relief role.

The movie carried a surprising amount of "heart" throughout it all the way to the end.

Here is the bottom line: Yes, this movie is worth your hard earned money to go see in the theater.

Amazing animation
15 August 2016
The animation/stop-motion on this movie was amazing. The visuals are great, the voice acting is top notch and the sequences of action are top notch as well.

My one complaint about the movie and the reason it dragged my score down a little was because the overall plot was a bit...muddled. I won't go into why I think that because I don't want to give anything away, but I will say I wasn't the only one at the screening who felt the same way.

The only other thing I would point out is that this MAY not be a great film to take younger (5 - 8 years old) children to, I could see some of the sequences being a bit frightening for them, but, as an adult I really liked how dark some of it was.

Overall the film was really good and I would definitely recommend seeing it.

Nerve (I) (2016)
Surprisingly Solid movie with a good message
27 July 2016
This movie comes at the perfect time with the craze of Pokemon Go; a time when you literally see millions of people obsessed with an app - where you can find videos of hordes of people in NYC all running after a particular Pokemon.

This is essentially the premise of the movie: a new app (game) comes out that takes teens in a particular city by storm, except the consequences can be much graver.

As to not give anything away, I try to be brief:

The acting was great; the pacing was great, the color pallet and tone of the movie were all top notch.

That being said, the plot - as it developed - felt "obvious", I wasn't surprised by anything and I wasn't ever emotionally "moved." The movie knows what it is, and it does it pretty well - it's a teen thriller.

What the movie explores is far more important: the way people interact with each other when they are hidden behind a wall of anonymity. The movie has a good message.

The BOTTOM LINE: I rate movies on whether it is worth spending the $$$ to see at a theater, in my opinion this one is worth seeing at a matinée showing ($5), but probably not dolling out $12 - $15. I hope that helps.

Incredibly Powerful
17 May 2016
Easily one of the most powerful movies I have ever seen; really makes you think of your own life and the lives of those around you. To me, those are the best, and rarest, types of movies; a film that doesn't just entertain for the sake of fun, but also manages to go much deeper and actually drive a point home - this movie did exactly that.

I saw this movie over a week ago and I still find myself thinking about it. The movie is extremely "real"; with real characters, real world reactions and none of the Hollywood "feel good" BS that fills so many other movies. It is raw.

I cannot recommend this movie enough; just know that it isn't a happy- go-lucky film; so don't watch it if you and some friends decide to get together for a fun night!

I find it ironic that this is a Christian movie, purportedly filled with Christian morals - honestly, you would think, being one of them - and yet this film manages to be completely dishonest in nearly everything that it does.

I am a Christian, and this movie offended me just as much as I am sure it offended atheists. It is completely dishonest to portray atheists as terrible, villain-esqe people who can do no good because they don't know Jesus.

The bottom line is this movie was made for a Christian audience which is only interested in patting each other on the back that they're "the good guys" in God's eyes. It's laughable, and downright depressing (as a Christian), that other Christians actually think this movie might be some form of evangelism for non-Christians.

Keanu (2016)
A Comedy Worth Watching
28 April 2016
This was one of the best comedies that I have seen in some time; that isn't to say you will fall out of your seat laughing - but the laughter was consistent from beginning to end, and that is pretty much the only thing that matters to me when I decide to go see a comedy.

Seeing how this movie was a clear reference to Keanu Reeves "John Wick", at least as far as the marketing is concerned, I thought the movie would be more of a direct spoof of that movie; but it wasn't - it was more so just a general action comedy and I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a "spoof" movie even though they were certainly playing off well known action tropes.

My bottom line: Is this movie worth shelling out the $ to go see in the theater, in my opinion, yes it is. Get some friends and go have some good laughs.
