The Beekeeper (2024)
Saints Row Meets John Wick in a Sweet as honey One-Man-Army Action Fest
Like the video game series, Saints Row, this movie goes above the realm of possible and mixes absurdity with a one-man-army. If you're a fan of the John Wick, Equalizer, and similar films, this will definitely scratch the itch. Jason Statham has quite the sting in this high paced, government contract killer type movie. Just as the motive of John Wicks rage, Statham has a similar, reason to get revenge. However, the initial situation makes his revenge reasonable. As long as you don't read too much into the plausibility of the plot, the characters, choreography, and kills are as sweet as honey. If you want a similar movie to the previous ones mentioned, give this one a watch.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Thirst Quenching Flick
The first time I ever read the novel by Bram Stoker, I was waiting for someone to adapt the captain's log into film. While it's fairly predictable, and didn't fully live up to my hopes, I couldn't help but be entertained throughout its entirety. To start, the cinematography, dialogue, and acting are top notch. It reminded me of classic creature feature movies that get right to the point and become a survival of the fittest state of affair. They don't fear breaking modern horror "no-no's" and his goes to show that the creators are true to the genre classics.
However, the fact that it gets right to the point, it fails to build suspense and therefore you don't feel threatened or scared at all. Plus, they show the monster way too soon - which was also ruined by the trailers and advertisements. All-in-all, it's a great Friday night flick, but it's no Nosferatu, Dracula, The Lost Boys, and other great vamp flicks - however it will satisfy your thirst for blood thirsty beasts.
A House on the Bayou (2021)
Unlikable characters
All characters are annoying and not likable in any way. What makes horror good is when you develop a connection with a character and hope they survive. In this case, they could all get removed and I'd sleep perfectly well.
Creepshow: Model Kid/Public Television of the Dead (2021)
For the love of horror!
As a long time fan of Creepshow 1, Creepshow 2, and now, Shudder's Creepshow series, I'm excited to see that they're taking it in the right direction. Season 1 had some hits, and some flops, as any anthology series does. However, season 2 kicks off with a double feature of fun combining horror history, classic tropes, and pop culture to make something original and entertaining. I couldn't take my eyes away from the screen as a big grin stretched across my face. Heck, it was so fun I had to watch it twice back-to-back. All genre fans will appreciate this solid start to season 2 - hope they can run with this energy throughout the season!
The Wretched (2019)
Reminiscent of 80's horror
I've been binging many of the classic 80's horror as well as cult classics and this film, The Wretched, gives me a similar feeling. It's your classic "I think my neighbor is a ____" with the mix of teen romance and family drama. It isn't an intellectual horror as this is a saturated genre, but it was fun to watch an updated version of the genre movies I love (fright night, the lost boys, etc). Like those films, they aren't perfect but they have there strengths as well as weaknesses. The creepiness was decent, but it was never very scary. It did a good job of slowly introducing the monster and building suspense. One thing I disliked was that the subplots failed to go below surface level so looking back they felt like a waste of energy - should have focused on only one along with the main story. However, the production was fantastic and you could tell they knew what they were doing. Actors were fine, but nothing to write home about.
Real rating: 6.3 (given a 7 because I feel the current score of 5.8 is bit too low)
