The Jim Henson Hour: Dog City (1989)
A Gem
Stumbled across Dog City via Kanopy, a streaming service of my local library. As a Henson fan and a Rowlf the dog fan, it was a wonderful gift.
The puns are epic. Loved the musical number, and hope I can find a copy for my playlist.
Perfect film for a precocious adolescent and their grandparents. The Noir plotline and the threatened / muppety violence may be tough for a younger child to process. If your adult kids liked the Muppet Show and related movies, it will be a nice surprise for them, like finding a long lost home movie. I don't know who the next Jim Henson will be, but the entertainment world needs you desperately!
Christmas She Wrote (2020)
They've Had Worse
New record for most romances in a single movie. If your character didn't end up with a significant other you must have annoyed the producers.
Suspend disbelief for 2 hours and you will have a good time.
A Man and His Prostate (2020)
It's a Good Show, but be prepared
There are not nearly enough movies about prostate issues, yet about 1 man in 6 will face prostate cancer and even more will face other issues with one of our favorite glands. This movie combines facts, humor, and drama to tell an important story.
Asner does a wonderful job, but audiences should know that the language and visual aids are anatomically correct!
Stars Fell on Alabama (2021)
Delightfui Rom-Com, Perfect Couples Movie
Enjoyed this movie very much - it was an escape from a grim news day, and well-executed. The leads and supporting cast are likeable, the direction is first-rate, and the use of anime techniques for montages elevated the production quality.
This is a 21st century Southern style Rom-Com - there are no Confederate flags (only the state flag of Alabama), no redneck stereotypes (thank you), and I can't remember an expletive (thank you). The idea of a Hollywood agent with a moral compass breaks the mold. There is no racism - only one black character and one Asian character, both of whom support the hero to the max. I would have liked to know more about their backstories (especially David, the best friend from back home). Any nastiness from the town's "bad guys" comes from common human failings, not because of Alabama roots (thank you). Most TV franchises hope for six seasons and a movie. This movie gives enough possibilities for six TV seasons!
Love, Lights, Hanukkah! (2020)
First rate cast, a story that is a cut above other Hallmark movies
Don't want to give away spoilers here, but if you have experience with adoptions this will tug on the heartstrings even more strongly than usual.
Corner Gas: American Resolution (2009)
Better the 2nd Time
Corner Gas is a fair trade partner when it comes to teasing American and Canadian stereotypes. The build-up to the final gag was perfect. Full disclosure: I am American with Canadian relatives. Canada has the much cooler sounding anthem, even in French. BTW, anybody know who did the voice of the Licorice?
Elvis All-Star Tribute (2019)
Imitation is the best form of showing us why we miss Elvis
Credible covers of Elvis songs. Made me interested in hearing more from Post Malone, Sean Mendes and others. Would have liked more about Elvis and the cultural impact the 1968 special had.
Big Fat Liar (2002)
Pleasantly Surprised
Much better than expected. Good family flick - catch it on reruns. The whole is more than the sum of its parts. Paul Giamatti chews up the scenery - he has way more talent then the role deserves. A treat to watch Inspector Uhl from "The Illusionist" go over the top. The blue man scenes had my 11 year old in stitches. The cameos were particular fun for the parents - nice to see Lee Majors and Urkel (umm, Jaleel) again. It's going to be tough to think up 10 lines for this film , but let's hear it for a movie that promotes honesty between a child and their parents! Amanda Bynes does a fine job when she gets to be part of the sting. I normally can't stand Frankie Muniz but he is just fine here. Hats off to the casting director - if only for hiring Giamatti!
