Gangster film with humanity
Scarface at least shows humanity - that this violent world created by those in the Arts and those in society comes to nothing in the end.
I think it success has to do with the fact that performances are very personal and the audience will not find it hard to relate to characters. It makes an interesting watch and it will make the viewer wonder as to what will happen next and like the participants we do too like those criminals who thought becoming a gangster was all that - just study the rappers of today and their lyrics.
Al Pacino is brilliant as the great Scarface without a plan. Needless to say what I found most fascinating of all is the fact that it is based on a real story.
I think it was violent, but it also showed how violence begets violence.
We're becoming a society that celebrates violence and that is tragic. Hopefully more filmmakers will key into peace in the future.
A Little Princess (1995)
This movie is a solid 10 all the way
They don't make movies this good anymore. The reason they don't make 'em is the box office. This is the same analogy as sticking society with garbage food all day long until people are forced to pick between tacos and burgers. It's a monopoly. I cried at the end of 'Little Princess' and I'm a grown man. I haven't met a single person who didn't like this film. Hollywood must make more of these films, but they can't because they don't know how. It's like asking Al Capone to be kinder and gentler. We need to vote with our dollars and support films like 'Little Princess' Get the DVD. Buy tickets to good movies like this. Another great film is 'Good Will Hunting'
Murder at 1600 (1997)
By the book thriller
I mildly enjoyed the film, but it could have been much better. They need to increase the subplots more in movies these days. More of Wesley being kicked out of his apt would have added dramatic suspense to the thriller suspense. It's so fast foodish, this film. Just like a typical studio executive's notes that miss the story-telling point. Movies have to be a 7 course meal for the price at the box office, but they deliver a burger and fries every time. That's why indie films are so good. Overall, the acting was good. Wesley always good, Diane is just great. Directing good. But again the story was a 6. Recommend only for a rainy night Overall a 6.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Definitely worth watching again
They don't make these kinds of movies anymore. This one had a lot of heart and wasn't pretending to be 'cool'. I get so sick of Hollywood glamour in movies today. There's not enough heart and soul like 'Good Will'. We need more movies that talk about the human spirit instead of spitting on it. Hollywood has become a frat boy house where no one cares about where we're going in the human race. No one cares period. They just want to make money and have their little power struggles. What made this a non-Hollywood movie was the genuine feel of Matt Damon and Robin Williams - nothing glamorous, just real interaction. Definitely cried in the end like everyone else. Amazing movie that deserved the Oscars. Highly Recommend.
Riding Giants (2004)
Good surfing movie
I saw this in the theaters and really relaxed and enjoyed the movie. There needs to be more freedom in movies today. Have you noticed how mean-spirited movies are now? Why can't there by more movies that show man vs. nature? I liked the photography work, but to be honest, I wish there had been less cutting and fancy editing and more solid stories of surfing the big waves. It felt too much like fast food and not enough filet mignon. I liked the tribute to that surfer who died which was touching, but more should have been made of what it's like to surf the big waves. Overall excellent film. We need more films like this. Highly recommend for DVD.
