One of the strangest and worst movies I've seen.
Cosmopolis is tiresome, pretentious, meaningless, dull, empty, boring, and awful. Not a single thing any of the 'characters' said or did made the least amount of sense. There was no story. Everything was so alien and obtuse, it was almost an anti-film - which would be fine, as long as it made me feel something. But I'm quite sure, for whatever reason, this was all deliberate it's too disciplined and self-assured not to be. But no matter which way you look at it it just doesn't work. Anti- humor, for example, works because it still makes you laugh, not because it doesn't. It's just the wrong side of off. I felt nothing (other than boredom). It inspired nothing intellectually (other than this acerbic review). But like 'Existenze', it can be oddly absorbing. It's kind of lulling it's like watching a film from another planet. But this gets old fast, and unlike in 'Existenze', there is no eventual payoff or explanation/ revelation.
It seems like every moment of the film is painstakingly designed to confuse / repel / bore / alienate / frustrate the audience. 'Look at me, I'm Cronenberg! I don't rely on cheap tricks such as ACTUAL FILMMAKING'. He's either subverting EVERYTHING EVER (if that is the case you have to have some kind of payoff for any of it to have any resonance) - you can't just make a terrible movie and go 'There! Take that's society! This movie is terrible. And because I did it deliberately that means it's actually brilliant and I'm a genius!' (ala Lars Von Trier). How does he get away with it? If this isn't the case, and he was actually trying to make a good movie, then it's even worse, as it was a monumental failure. It could of course all be some ridiculous metaphor / allegory / analogy, a pretentious pseudo-high-art(house)-film whose only defense is 'you just don't get it!'
which he expects people to waste 2 hours of their life watching - a highly unreasonable proposal.
