All This and Rabbit Stew (1941)
Mixed Feelings
I have mixed feelings about this one. Now me being African American, first glance makes me say this is racist, which it is. Other reviewers say that it isn't and nothing's wrong with it. That's wrong because you're basically looking at it as a black Elmer, which it is. But that isn't the racist part.
It more or less stereotypical. First the design of the hunter. Real dark face and over-sized lips are the parts that anger me. I would say the anger would upset others too, but it doesn't bother me because Elmer had a different way of speaking too. Also I just found out that Warner Bros. named the character "Sambo" which doesn't sit with me comfortably either. And I'm not sure if this counts but did anyone notice that he had over-sized feet? Now this does have it's funny moments. The bullets was very good piece. And the craps game is stereotypical, but when they were playing and Bugs and the hunter were screaming made me crack a smile.
Now maybe if they had brought in more hunters in other cartoons, this one particular one wouldn't be so bad. The most offensive part is the design of the character, which is why it's in the "Censored 11"
Runaway Brain (1995)
Great Way To Start
I have come across a few criticisms over this short, but even those didn't ruin if when I finally saw it. First off, the animation was great. I love the way they did. They basically kept Minnie and Mickey's designs and freshened them up. The only thing I can complain about was the pace, since it did move a little too fast. But I think it is a great way to evolve Mickey into current trends and it'll still appeal to teenagers. Honestly, when the classic Mickeys were put out, do you think that the time was and trends were the same? I think not.
Also, for the people that say it's too scary. I find that hard to believe. I showed this to a 7 year old, and they like it. Played three times more. I also showed it to my pops, who seemed to enjoy it and laughed at the references. So I think this was a success.
The only reason I think some didn't enjoy it was because it came as a surprise as how dark this was. I guess some people didn't catch the commercials that were being shown on Disney channel that I saw when I was like...7 or 8. Anyway, this was a great way get put Mickey in the current time. And I see they're doing the same with "House of Mouse". They actually do have some good jokes in the show.
ATL (2006)
A true American Story
This movie rose slightly above my expectations. I'm from Atlanta, and when I was watching this movie, I felt like I was at home. If you are from ATL, you will surely enjoy this movie.
I could relate to the characters even. I was reminded of T.I.'s character, Rashad, of myself constantly. The friends he had also had similarities to my own friends.
Also, if you're from a different city, or state at that, then it should be interesting to you. It shows different characters. The four main ones are nothing alike and each are connected but still have completely different problems.
The only problem I had was that I think this is the only type of movie, T.I. could fit in (no disrespect). He's clearly from the city, but on one scene he seemed slightly false, and on another scene he was close to looking silly.
Big Boi on the other hand had a very good performance. He also provides plenty of comic relief and still stays in his antagonistic character. The roller blading scenes were my favorite though. Mostly because it combined performance with hip hop music, which is something I enjoy.
This movie is good for anyone. It will give you a nice side of Atlanta and it stays in a class of it's own. It doesn't glorify anything negative. It may not be a classic, but Chris Robinson, Dallas Austin, T-Boz, Will Smith, and Antwon Fisher had something here. Something special.
