oh boy, prepare to get addicted
Man, every time I come on this page it makes me sad. 2002, one season. It brings genuine anger up in me. No other show makes me actually feel pis*ed off that it got canceled. Annoyed yes, because usually they replace most good shows with dumb reality TV (because they can make 3 reality shows for the price of one good show) which mostly makes people even dumber or some soapy politically correct show that is just another clone of a similar show on a rival network only with a different cast and slightly different setting. Firefly was obviously too complex (even though it is simply just realistic and so easy to understand and be immersed in this amazing universe if one just gives it a chance) plus I wonder if they even had intended to make it work since they screwed up the order of the episodes and put it on the air whenever they felt like it without any logical and sane timetable. Retards, man it makes me angry again.
This is definitely Whedon's masterpiece, I honestly do not think anything else he did comes close. He created this amazing universe with an amazing and interesting history (and I find history otherwise boring as hell in most cases) that seemed so believable. The characters were realistic and three dimensional and the relationships organic and pristine. Everything felt so real on that ship, the atmosphere felt like home, you really began to care for them. Very very few shows manage to bring characters so close to the viewer. I loved the swearing in Chinese, so original and I loved the touch of the old Westerns in the dialogs and in general. Also the development of the characters really showed over the course of the season and somehow it just felt that with each episode everything got better. The adventurous aspect of the show is I think one of the things I loved best about the show. The feeling of freedom and traveling around the universe with each episode feeling fresh and intriguing.
The writers were also amazing. From funny episodes with Jayne and his statue and song, scary ones with Reevers and not to forget my favourite, the "zen" episode with Jubal Early the bounty hunter and his brilliant statements and the conversations with other characters. Worthy of every emmy and prize one could give them.
So all in all, yeah I recommend this show to anyone. In my book it is hands down number one and no other show I have seen since comes close. It is so sad they stopped production. I still hope, as many many Firefly fans, even if it is slightly delusional, that someday somehow some CEO realizes the number of followers this show has and how many dvds were/are sold and brings it back. I am sure that today it would have had more than enough viewers.
Among all the trash that is on TV people appreciate good shows more. I think HBO should bring it back, sometimes I feel it is the only production house that is not afraid to put out more complex shows that take a bit more to develop. A fan can hope. If I were rich I would personally finance the production. Now I only need to get rich. Hmm
Starts great but then just falls apart
The basic idea was great. We all love superheroes with special powers. We love how they are above everyone else and can do what they want.
When I first saw the previews I could not wait for the show to start. It seems like finally some fresh wind in the genre. And at first it seemed like it. Great visuals and great filmography with a cool narrator. But then I started noticing how the story was not moving anywhere, how the narrator started getting annoying and sometimes had the dumbest of lines. Then there were numerous plot holes, we started getting way too many heroes(for the writers anyhow, they were not capable of properly incorporating them into the story so they became a nuisance) and the worst of all in my book, because of too much material and inability to tie it all in with the story, the viewer never gets to see the proper development of the heroes and accepting their powers and using them while not constantly b*tching about it. Basically all of the heroes acted very unrealistically. Except Sylar, who was a really well portrayed bad guy, everyone else was just a mess. I did not buy the story nor the motivation of the characters. And do not get me started how some of the characters are so annoying I actually always skipped their segment (Niki and the little kid anyone? ).
The seconds season and afterwards is not worth mentioning. The stupid pictures and all that just seemed forced. They should have finished with that. Though in any case the writers just mess it all up. The story becomes unwatchable and the characters behave even worse I thought possible.
All in all, the series starts great, great idea, great visuals. But then we have too many characters, story starts slowing down to a crawl, plot holes and loose ends, stupid confusing story, stupid heroes with unrealistic behavior who constantly complain about everything and as a viewer one does not get the satisfaction of seeing his favourite hero really embracing his powers and acting normally. Etc..
Legend of the Seeker (2008)
pretty good fantasy series
First I have to say I read (most of ) the series. I wont go into detail about it, but what we all can agree is that at least the first two or three books were very good for this genre. So I started watching this series when it came out and was quite disappointed. It was way too much Xena (which is not bad, just I don't think appropriate frame for this) like and lacking the dark tone and the seriousness. And the fact that the countryside was always exactly the same with sometimes the same parts of the woods used, that really made it lame. The plots were too uneventful and pretty much always the same in essence and the characters way too passive. Zedd did not really seem like the powerful wizard, Richard not the mighty seeker and Kahlan was a tag along.
BUT The second season brought some serious change and I love it. It seems some people were fired because the changes are thorough. Zedd finally starts using his powers, becomes more involved and more like in the books. Kahlan and Richard do not change that much but I think they do start behaving a bit more serious and less mushy which goes along with the a lot more dark undertone of the second season in comparison to the first.Which is how it should be, like in the books. Finally the plots become a bit darker and real life like. I love the fact that they obviously increased their budget because a lot more CGI is used which helps A LOT with the credibility of the characters as with the credibility of the land (finally they are trying to change it a bit so its not that obvious they are always in the same part of New Zeland or wherever they are filming it). Also it seems they are sticking a bit more to the storyline. And I love how Cara has turned out. So, first season - very average. Second season - very good Id say. More interesting individual plots, powerful magic, more CGI, darker, a more authentic feeling of the gang and their journey. If they keep it up and get an even bigger budget It can become a seriously great show.
Iron Man: Armored Adventures (2008)
I must say that at first I did not like the style of the animation. Its different, completely computer generated. You know what I mean. But after watching a few episodes I must say I got hooked. It is one of the best animated shows out there. I might just put it right next to my favorite shows like the 1994 Spider-man TV-series, 1996 Superman TV-series, 2001 Justice League TV-series or even Samurai Jack. Shows that are not generic, shallow and with stupid, over and over recycled humor. The stories in Iron Man are intriguing, I especially like the adventurous angle. And I really must congratulate the creators on making the fights and movements and the trashing that occurs on screen feel alive. I don't know how they did it but each step that Iron Man makes in the heavy suit or in general the movements of the armor,Hulks movements etc.. everything has this incredible audio backing that makes the movements come alive somehow. When he is thrown against the wall the bass is just right, when he walks the sounds of parts moving are just right. For example compare it to the new Planet Hulk animation movie by Marvel and you will be amazed at how bad it is and how good Iron Man AA is. Like day and night. So all in all we have good interesting plots with fun twists (refreshingly well thought out and logical with attention to detail and not with lame plot holes like we can often find with such animated series) accompanied with witty dialog and clever jokes. Again I repeat, If you find the animation a bit weird at first, don't, it is amazing, especially when you realize how incredible it is mixed with the audio. It really comes alive. And the how the Mandarin is portrayed in the series is amazing. The voice, the looks. Very scary and evil. I seriously do not think I am exaggerating if I say that it shows that the authors are real fans of the comics and put a lot of effort in making everything click together. Unlike the previously mentioned Planet Hulk or some other lame attempt at animation.
Casino Royale (2006)
Incredible, back to the old days of cinema
I had my doubts, before seeing the movie, wondered if it is going to be another stupid action flick as those with Brosnan, only this time with a good actor, on par with Connery or Moore. Hollywood these day is mostly just mindless, stereotypical action and witless dialogs.
This Bond is everything that describes the opposite. Its witty, the fast paced scenes and slow ones are in very good balance and either being an action scene or a slow scene, it never ever gets boring or unimaginative. There are numerous funny and witty remarks and associations placed very delicately, precisely and do not stand out intrusively. Everything is done with quality in mind, in good taste. The word original can be even used, word that can be very seldom said about most Hollywood movies. It remains an action flick, its far from being a complex drama with a moral underlying the story. The movies gives us hope that mainstream action films can still be breathtakingly good. Oh, there are a few some advertisements for certain items placed strategically and an unnecessary or misplaced line here or there but that could be called nitpicking.
All in all this Bond is incredibly good and I hope the sequels well follow in its footsteps.
It is sad where the movie industry is going
I was looking forward to the movie because good movies are really far in between these days. Johnny Depp is playing, that should be good I thought, really only remembering Depp and his wackiness from the first part.
People are becoming increasingly confused in these times, wanting more and more intensity from things, wanting everything instantly to occupy them, things to distract them from their thoughts.
This movie is just too typical of that to be even funny. We have action sequences stretched out beyond anything enjoyable, there is absolutely no depth to anything in the movie, you could be a mushroom and still understand everything happening on the screen. It was like watching formula 1 these days. Bland, no likable characters, no passion , no nothing. Just something happening. Great CGI and technical perfection. No good dialogs, no real background of anything or anyone, no intelligent humor, It just has no essence. I don't remember yawning so hard coming out from the cinema.
Before Sunset (2004)
Beautiful, sad, happy, real. Simply amazing.
First I have to say that I haven't been this moved by a film for quite some time. At the first you notice that its not filmed in an ordinary manner. Its a dialog between Jesse and Celine. And if i would have known this before I might be put off from watching it. Don't be.
In a way the whole dialog represents the way we think during our lives. It sums it up in a way. It is just so authentic. How we slowly become numb, maybe don't even realize it. Love turns out not to be what we expected but we never really stop hoping somewhere deep inside. We have dreams and we wish them to come true but reality drags us down. Having a dream, a strong wish, desire can be extremely hard and emotionally painful if it does not come true. It is just a burden, a perspective by which we weigh our experiences.
But then again when we have our dreams come true, after a while, don't we just find ourselves wanting more ? Not necessarily. When you have experienced the good and the bad, you do not idealize that much anymore. It think it is about enjoying the simple things, honesty, joy, following your heart and not your ego, being a good person and living one day at a time.
Made my day in any case.
A nice movie
I always like watching this sort of movies which try to ask or answer some of life's questions or put them in perspective. The acting of main actors/esses is great, hands down. The story is interesting and I could relate it to a number of things in my life. It makes you rethink some of the usual problems in ones life and distance yourself a bit so you get a clearer view. It is actually quite sad how the same problems remain in every generation and in most cases we just don't learn from them. Nevertheless I would not give it a 10 because even though the story is presented with a wide range of complementing thoughts and symbolism I think it lacked wisdom, and is sometimes a bit too dramatic and stereotypical.
Open Water (2003)
Quite good yet somewhat unsettling
The first thing that hit me when I started watching the movie was the camera. You can plainly see it is not a big budget Hollywood production but a rather independent film with limited funds. Sometimes that is good, sometimes not. This time it is, because I suppose in a way brings the point across even more so. The acting is good, which is a very important part of such a script, since it tries to portray the couple dealing with being left behind. I must say the movie is somewhat unsettling and harshly presents the emotional roller-coaster of the couple and their behavior with being lost, helpless and all the time on the verge of a shark attack. After watching it, I'm not sure what to feel, but it is definitely not a feel-good movie. I've always disliked diving and never feel comfortable swimming too far out or in the open sea if on a boat, so perhaps thats why the movie affected me a bit more.
Smart and Fun !!
This movie is about a cynical and satirical writer with a wife who's character is practically just the opposite of him, fun, open, lively and talkative. As they get new neighbours with a young, mildly disabled girl the story starts to unfold. It's sometimes a laugh out loud funny (witty remarks by Peter hehe ) and sometimes gives you some things to consider. Don't really have much time now, but overall the movie is well made, characters likable and the movie nicely brings them closer to the audience, you can understand them. It is a movie to watch in the evening when you don't feel like watching all that cgi and shooting and just want something more peaceful, intelligent with quite some laughs in between. Recommended.
