The House of the Devil (2009)
This title kept popping up in the horror section online I ended up checking out some reviews saying it was an homage to 80's horror films, which tend to be one of my favorite things to watch. The cover/art work really does look like something I would have stared at when renting VHS tapes as a child.
Finally gave it a chance, but what a let down.
I do give credit that it started out promising. The obvious throwback yellow credits in the beginning were fun. Unfortunately it felt like after the first 15 minutes were over so was the character development. I had little no no interest in liking any one in the cast. I felt too much time was used to show what a douche her roommate was and she doesn't even get to die. Why make the audience dislike someone in a horror film and not off them? Total waste in my opinion.
The gore was minimal, other than the shot to the head. Now I will sound like a creep here... good effects for the head being shot but guns are not a favorite weapon of mine in a horror movie, unless great suspense has been made around it, which was not done in this film. All other deaths were mainly stabbings and a ton of blood. The knife used looked too shiny and fake.
The build up was so boring. I actually kept not paying attention and had to rewind and re-watch (and be bored). When the satanic stuff started I had already checked out and didn't really care what happened.
I guess I was just bummed out that it didn't use the elements of the 80's I would have expected. Again I am going to sound like a creep... what's the point in watching someone die in a horror movie with out either being scared, grossed out or in awe of it's creativity. Any one can use a knife to s*tab someone, so if the death isn't unusual then it gets forgotten.
