Hopkins Carried a Weak Storyline...Could Have Been Better!
I had such high hopes for this movie and as soon as I watched the trailer and found Anthony Hopkins was lined up to be in this movie.
Overall this movie could have been better. In the wrong hands this movie could have been terrible, if the wrong actor was cast instead of someone the calibre of Hopkins, this would have been nothing more than an OK film. I totally believe Hopkins due to his chilling and at times understated performance carried this film. The plot at times felt very weak and towards they end you begin to loose concentration on what they whole thing is about.
Ryan Gosling for me looked out of his depth, he at times delivered a pretty good performance, but for they most part you could see that he lacked they on screen presence that is needed in a film of this genre. He failed to deliver the knockout performance that I was praying to see from him.
The film was great fun but don't expect to be blown away, its full of light humour from an un-characteristic Hopkins who, as ever is a joy to watch and delivers yet another masterclass performance, I loved every scene he was in. Given time Gosling could come into his own and find his feet as a credible actor in Hollywood. He is very likable and a breathe of fresh air but I left thinking that anyone could have played his character and perhaps done a better job.
Freedom Writers (2007)
One of the Best Films I have Seen in a Long Time
Going into the cinema I had high expectations for this movie and I was praying not to be disappointed, believe me I was far far from being disappointed.
The film failed to captivate me in the first 10minutes, but after that it flows really well and draws you into the remarkable story that at times you cant believe is true.
Unlike Dangerous Minds this movie is less violent and far more lighter to watch. The movie goes at a really nice pace and allows you to get to know the students and their backgrounds reasonably well. The heartfelt moment between the students and the elderly lady whom help hide Ann Frank, was simply one of the most touching and moving piece of film I have seen. At times I felt the movie was trying to hard to impress but you allow that because they superb acting throughout makes it worth while. The actress who plays the character Ava was outstanding and stands out amongst a worthy supporting cast, who each deliver a heartfelt and real performance.
Hilary Swanks portrayal was perfectly understated and on point. She delivered perfectly they right amount of power and sadness to her character, however at times I did feel that her portrayal was becoming very predictable, but that said her overall performance for me was at a higher standard to the Dangerous Minds lead Michelle Pfhifer.
This movie will overall pull on every emotion you have. You cant help however, the fact that at times you feel as though you've'e seen it all before, like the time she takes her students to the restaurant which is similar to Dangerous Minds. However the movie goes deeper and pulls out moments that will leave you reaching for the nearest tissue-box.
A CAPTAVATING STORY THAT WILL LEAVE YOU Overwhelmed WITH EMOTION FROM Beginning TO END.
Notes on a Scandal (2006)
Superb.....a British Masterpiece
Before going to see this movie Id heard mixed reviews, some said that the storyline was to controversial or hard to watch, but on the other hand Id heard amazing reviews about this movie so, I decided to go and see for myself what the movie was like.
I'm a big fan of Cate Blanchett after seeing her in The Gift, were she delivered an astounding performance. Id only really seen Judi Dench in the Bond movies were I thought she delivered strong performances in all of them.
This movie for me shows just how fantastic British movies can be, it far excels over a lot of the stuff Hollywood has produced over the past decade. As the movie plays out, I found it drew out mixed emotions; at times I laughed, due to the fantastic narration by Dench that is filled with some really funny lines and other times I felt the knife edge suspense brought on by the gripping acting produced by the leads (Dench and Blanchett).
Unlike many Hollywood releases, the movie doesn't rely on special effects or over emotion ed and at times dramatic filled acting. This movie is well crafted and at times understated. The strong and powerful performances by Blanchett and especially Dench, aren't to over-powering and are easy to get into from the very beginning.
The movie does have a controversial storyline, but its not thrown in your face and over-stated. The enthralling acting by Dench and Blanchett draws your attention away from the storyline enough so that its easier to watch.
This movie with the wrong lead actors could have in ways lacked its appeal and power. Both Blanchett and Dench are perfectly cast. They say perfect acting is all in they eyes, your eyes at times show more emotion than your body language, Judi Dench has this off to a 'T'. Im sure her performance will lead her up the red carpet all they way to the Oscar this year for Best Actress. Cate Blanchett is terrific and gives a fine and well crafted performance. Bill Nighy puts in a solid performance and deserves to a credible mention in any review this movie should gain.
Overall, the storyline could have been to over-powering but instead its very understated and in ways takes a back seat to they phenomenal acting by Dench and Blanchett. The chemistry between the two is fantastic to watch.
This movie ranks high in the top British films ever made.
