Moulin Rouge! (2001)
This romantic, musical drama is about a struggling writer (Ewan McGregor) who falls for a beautiful night club courtesan (Nicole Kidman) whom an insanely jealous duke (Richard Roxburgh) covets in 1899's Paris.
This musical love story take place in the early 20th century in France. Basically, this story is about four things: Beauty, Freedom, Truth, and above all things, LOVE! The movie is packed with some music such as "Lady Mamalade" (sung by Christina Aguilera, Mya, Missy Elliot, Pink, & Lil Kim), "Nature Boy" (written by David Bowie), "Your Song" (written by Elton John), and many more so exciting and so delighting songs that we may be familiar of. Baz Luhrmann (director of Romeo + Juliet) did a great job directing this masterpiece. Well done, Baz! I'm impressed!
The actors impressed me with their outstanding work in the film. I am especially impressed by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor's acting. Boy, they both can sing too! Nicole (Bewitched, The Interpreter) portrays Satine, a beautiful courtesan of a French night club in Paris. Ewan (The Island, Down With Love) portrays Christian, a young struggling writer who falls in love with her after she unwittingly draws him into her seductive spell with her sexual powers. Their secret affair leads them to explosive consequences. I have always loved Ewan and Nicole's work and this is what I have got to say to them, "Ewan & Nicole, you're doing great! Keep up the good work!" This film had great appearances from some supporting actors: John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent, and Richard Roxburgh. They all did a great job in the movie as well.
Overall, this film is spectacular, spectacular. It's one of the many splendored things that you will watch over and over again. I enjoyed it and I am in LOVE with it and you can can too cause' it's "so exciting, you audience will stomp and cheer! so delighting, it'll run for fifty years!"
a razzle dazzle masterpiece
This dazzling musical drama, based in the 1920s, is about a rich lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) who helps two murderesses, Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who killed her husband and sister after finding them in bed together and Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger), who killed her boyfriend after finding out he isn't going to make her a star. Both Velma and Roxie find themselves on death row and are fighting for fame.
This story takes place in 1920s Chicago about a young girl who dreams of stardom, a night club singer, and a lawyer who they hope can help make their acquittal certain & make them huge stars. I was impressed with the director's work and I was quite surprised that the film is the winner of six Oscars. This film includes some great supporting stars: Taye Diggs, Queen Latifah, Christine Baranski and Lucy Lu.
The actors did a great deal of work with their roles. First off, I am quite surprised at Renee Zellweger's work. Zenee Zellweger (Down With Love, Jerry Maguire) portrays a young girl named Roxie Hart who dreams to become a famous night club singer. Her role was in a way different from her previous roles and her acting is much better in this film. She also did a fine job with her singing as well. Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment) plays a night club singer named Velma Kelly who fights for fame after finding herself on death row. She's a really good actress and I am very impressed with her acting and singing. Richard Gere (Runaway Bride, Shall We Dance) plays a lawyer named Billy Fynn who helps Velma and Roxie win their case by twisting their stories of what happened when they murdered their loved ones. He also did a fine job with his role as well. The rest of the cast did great with their roles in the film.
And all I can say in conclusion: "BRAVO! BRAVO! What a razzle dazzle showbiz that was!" Great job to the director and actors of this Oscar winning masterpiece. I'd give it a solid B for the job well done.
War of the Worlds (2005)
another Spielberg fantasy
War of the Worlds is a modern retelling of the novel written by H.G. Wells. In this remake, a family faces alien attacks and finds a way to survive this huge mess.
I enjoyed all the action, explosions, and the actors. Tom Cruise did an outstanding job with his role as a divorced man, Ray Ferrier. Dakota Fanning, gee, a child like her can sure act! Justin Chatwin-great new appearance from him. Both Justin and Dakota play Ray's children and together, all three of them find a way to survive the alien attacks. Finally, Tim Robbins, he did a great job portraying a frightened psycho.
Overall, I enjoyed the whole movie. This sci-fi fantasy is not for everyone, especially for people who don't like sci-fi and fantasies. A 8 out of 10 and a solid B won't hurt a bit.
The Island (2005)
hottest action-packed thrill ride!
The Island, which takes place in the year 2019, has a good story, sweet action, and great actors. This sci-fi, action masterpiece is about a mercenary (Djimon Hounsou) who chases two human clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson) who escaped from an underground facility after finding out their true fate.
Well everyone, Michael Bay has done it again. He has brought you Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, and now The Island-another intense action 'blow-stuff-up' movie with a little sci-fi to it. Bay has made his name by making loud, elaborate, and often silly action flicks. Yes, people, action movies containing explosions, chase scenes, & gun shootings are what he's good at.
The actors did an outstanding job with their roles. Known for his charming good looks and his very outstanding talent, Ewan McGregor (Star Wars I, II,& III, Moulin Rouge) did an outstanding job portraying his role in this film and I am quite impressed. McGregor plays a resident of an underground facility, named Lincoln Six-Echo, who questions this underground environment and hopes to be chosen to go to this paradise island. But Lincoln learns the hard way that this is all a bunch of nonsense and escapes for his life along with fellow resident, Jordan Two-Delta, played by Scarlett Johansson (Lost In Translation, Match Point). So that's when the fun action begins and the chase is on. Although Johansson's character is different than the ones from her previous films, she plays alongside McGregor pretty well. She looks mighty hot in this movie. Scarlett, you just got yourself a new fan.
The film has outstanding supporting actors: Djimon Hounsou(Constantine, Gladiator), who plays a bounty hunter, Albert Laurent, who is sent to go after the two clones, Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings, National Treasure), who is typecast as a bad guy and in fact, portrays one in the movie, Steve Buscemi (Armageddon, Con Air), known for his sense of humor and Michael Clarke Duncan (Green Mile, Armageddon). They all did a great job with their roles as well.
Overall, I enjoyed the whole movie a lot-all the action, the explosions, the shooting and the killing, the chase scenes, the humor, and the actors as well. If you're not into sci-fi and action flicks, this film is not for you. But if you like these kinds of movies, watch and enjoy! Otherwise, this film is only for audiences of people ages 16 and up. In some opinions, taking a science fiction story and turning it into an action thriller may not be the best thing to do, but I like that idea. Gee, I guess Michael Bay just can't help himself. Action flicks are his specialty as a director. So, here's what I have to say overall-"Dude, I found a flying bug." (That's said, I just found an ALL TIME favorite movie now.)
