The Other Side (2014)
I agree with others on many issues
I read the reviews of this before we watched it on Amazon Prime. At first, the reviews were GLOWING. That these filmmakers were apparently the best filmmakers ever. Then you trace the reviews to people involved with the film...
So now this has been accessible long enough for more honest reviews to trickle in. We read them all and figured its free on Prime, why not. There's a storm outside and we aren't going anywhere anyway.
I'm just going to give a brief overview, in-depth reviews are not my thing.
As others have stated, the script is weak. That is true.
Others have stated the acting is bad. That is true.
Others have stated the directing is bad. That is true.
I'm not sure why anyone would rate this higher than a 4 (assuming you are a genre fan).
This would have been much more effective as a short film. Too many unnecessary characters were involved in the full length film.
In fact, the world created didn't even need more than a handful of characters to convey what it needed to.
This isn't the worst film I've ever seen but I cannot recommend it.
Meltdown (2014)
Worse than awful
Sometimes I really wish that IMDb offered negative ratings.
I want a button to push that says "I want my money back!"
Or one that says "I want that hour and a half of my life back!"
Like this is so badly done I want to file a class action suit to make sure these filmmakers never make another film.
This movie would have been better if hey had left the lens cap on.
I try to imagine the production meetings that were made to bring this...thing to life.
"Hey man, I wrote this script. It doesn't make any sense. There is no overall arc, and the characters aren't ever developed. But let's make it anyway!"
I wonder how these crappy independent filmmakers have zero self-awareness.
At no point was this story ever good.
The Umbrella Man (2016)
Not worth your time
I am a huge fan of many things. One is independent films and the second is the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination. Went to TRFF to see Foxcatcher (which is whole other review - snooze-fest) and this was also one of the features playing. Shot on a shoestring budget of around (I'm guessing) 500 - 750k. A small budget on a period piece means several things. One is it isn't going to be great costume wise and 2, you'll be paying many of the actors nothing. At any rate, the plot and story have potential but not in the hands of this director (or AD staff). The acting is what you'd expect from a movie this low budget. No one had a break away performance and some of the extras looked like they just decided to walk aimlessly in the scenes. Had this been the hands of a capable director, it would be a good low budget indie. But as it stands now, its better off a stage play.

Let This Be a Lesson
When you make a movie, budget into it paying your actors.
This short is a prime example.
Instead of offering payment, they offer "copy & credit" and these dumb people fall for it every time.
This thing is badly acted that maybe a few more dollars would have allowed them to hire professional actors and not wanna be hobbyists.
Look at the cast, the majority are professional extras.
I SAW THIS AT A FILM FESTIVAL AND IT MADE ME SO ANGRY. I was like how did the director not see how poorly his actors were doing (minus the leads - overacted occasionally but its a broad comedy so it works.)? Maybe this director should be banned from future sets.
All Saints Eve (2015)
They even lie about the movie length
What do you call a movie that uses horrible actors that create unlikable characters, a crappy production company and a director that clearly doesn't give a crap? ALL SAINTS EVE.
Instead of donating money to cure childhood cancer, these morons make a completely horrible film.
If you were involved in this film in any way, you need to get out of show business now.
I get that people take roles for the money which explains Sean but for everyone else? No excuses.
If you wanna make a horrible film instead of curing cancer then that's on you.
Reasonable Men (2014)
B-o-r-i-n-g
Can't think of many things as boring as watching marginal actors try to convey emotion.
No one cares about the characters. It's directed by someone with no vision. The acting is forced and those accents are disturbing.
I lived in Pittsburgh when I was in college and its literally the worst. I see some of these "actors" have left for LA yet none of them are in anything. The other ones only succeed in non studio backed projects.
I would literally kill myself if i was over 35 with no major credit on my resume. It's bad enough if you haven't booked a Guest Star by 25, at 35 it's just pathetic.
Gore Orphanage (2015)
Can I get my money back?
Sometimes I watch bad horror flicks to be entertained about how bad they are.
This one is in a league of its own there.
The acting, direction and cinematography are like something a classroom of blind children with advanced syphilis would produce.
Think about it - instead of feeding the hungry or the poor, someone decided to make this steaming pile a fecal matter. Someone COULD have changed someones life for the better and helped humanity but instead made this.
I fear for our nation. And fear that acting teachers are losing on students because apparently they think they can already act.
Nope.
Nope.
Nope.
