The Black Phone (2021)
Solid film channeling 80s horror
I really enjoyed this film. It was very creepy, the acting was superb, and it gave me vibes of classic horror from the 80s.
Ethan Hawke was terrifying in this! It was unnerving as to what he would do to the kids, very dark and I felt stressed out watching the movie wondering what's gonna happen. Which, in my opinion, is always a good sign when you're on the edge of your seat.
I'm not one that has to have every single detail explained to me in a movie. I take movies for face value, entertainment, it's not a documentary .. it's fiction... it's a MOVIE !
If you want to watch a creepy horror/suspense flick I'd say check this one out.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
A touching Doomsday flick
I'm not that fond of doomsday movies, but I actually found this movie very enjoyable. It does have it's flaws and the biggest is that it can't make up it's mind between being a comedy versus a drama. The comedic parts were so over the top that when it came to the 2nd half of the movie I was quite surprised how actually good it was.
They start with a raucous portrayal of people reacting to the meteor... the riots, the hit men, the orgy, etc... but then shift gears to this wonderful little love story.
I enjoyed the journey between the two characters. The ocean scene was beautiful. I felt the romance was real in that kind of circumstance. I was very touched by Steve Carrell's performance, especially when he visited his father. I found the end very sad and realistic when she told him she was scared and the comfort they gave each other was bittersweet. I did shed a tear at the end.
Overall I was pleasantly surprised. I do feel it could have been so much better if it was more consistent. It was borderline wacky and then blossomed into a nice film. If your bored on a Saturday night, check it out!
Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs (2005)
Interesting concept but poorly made
I was excited to finally see Dan Aykroyd talk about UFOs, his opinions, etc. I've been a fan of his with his outspokenness about UFOs. This movie had a lot of elements that were interesting and the videos and archive footage were great for showing some type of evidence. However, the way the movie was setup with the interviewer and Dan Akyroyd just didn't work. They had a lot of data for this movie but the way it was displayed was a big old mess. They kept showing the same videos throughout the movie. I wish they would have elaborated more on Dan Aykroyd's view of the credibility of some of the videos/pictures they had shown (exp. Billy Meier).
I think it had the potential to be one of the better documentaries about UFOs; unfortunately, it was poorly made and constructed. The camera angles between the interviewer and Dan Aykroyd were awkward and if anything, for a skeptic to watch, that dynamic in itself I felt lacked credibility to their overall opinions. It is worth seeing, but I wish it was made better. Dan..if you want to make another UFO documentary, look me up, I can do better ;)
