Kate Plays Christine (2016)
The Most Pretentious Movie I Ever Saw
This was bad. It tried way too hard to be cool and edgy. And the way it switched back and forth from documentary to acting was just plain confusing and annoying. The other film about Chubbuck was far better and Rebecca Hall was brilliant in it and truly deserving of a nomination for her performance. I will say Kate looked a lot more like Christine than Rebecca did. A few times when she was tan it was actually eerie, but I give this movie one star for that, one for hearing from those who knew Christine, and one for showing some vintage footage of the real Christine Chubbuck. If you are interested in learning about Chubbuck, I definitely recommend the other film over this one.
B.C. Butcher (2016)
Cool Film!
I'll make this short and sweet. If you like Troma films, you should dig B.C. Butcher even though - how can I put this gently - it doesn't go to extremes like the typical Troma film does. I found it surprising and actually quite interesting that the movie is pretty tame by Troma standards. That is a compliment, not an insult. Maybe just because it is a Troma film, I was expecting it to be more graphic? But graphic doesn't make a film good, being good makes a film good and this one was fun to watch. The women are beautiful and the guys funny, and you could tell the entire cast were having a good time. 99% of movies are too long, so I had no problem at all with it only being 51 minutes in length either. If you are sick to death of hearing about politics and human rights like me, crank this cool film up and escape...and laugh a little. With Troma, you either "get it" or you don't, and when it came to B.C. Butcher, thankfully I "got it".
The Pom Pom Girls (1976)
A Time Capsule for the 1970's
This movie doesn't have much of a plot at all, but maybe only "The Van" is more of a time capsule for the 1970's teenager. It makes me laugh how today's so-called critics will praise a movie like "Dazed and Confused" as a masterpiece and laugh at "The Pom Pom Girls" and consider it cheesy and dated. "Dazed and Confused" (while I love that film) is basically a bigger budget remake of "The Pom Pom Girls". The vibe and lack of plot of the two movies are very similar. If you enjoy "Dazed and Confused" you will surely love "The Pom Pom Girls". And don't be misled by the title...there's very little to do with Pom Pom Girls here unfortunately. It's actually more about guys. Overall this is a fun movie that is very much of its time and portrays what it was really like to be a teenager in the carefree crazy 1970's.
