I'd Be More Entertained Watching Garbage Ferment
23 September 2017
I'm a huge fan of horror. Generally, I'll watch every horror film that released in theater, so last night I went to see Friend Request. I didn't know it was opening night either and there were about 6 other people there. I walked in a couple minutes late during the intro sequence and found myself confused as I watched about three to five minutes of Facebook snapshots set to weird pop music. The movie then started, I guess, and that feeling of confusion never subsided. It got right into the plot and completely skipped any character development. I didn't care at all whether the lead character, or any other character in the film for that matter, lived or died. I didn't understand the motivation of the antagonist and it wasn't ever really explained. Apparently she was a witch or something similar and had magical powers for some reason. She wanted to kill all of the main characters friends for no reason other than she felt lonely, I think. I don't even know. The ending was even more jumbled and nonsensical. By the time the credits rolled, nothing was explained whatsoever. This was by far the worst film I've seen in theaters in recent memory. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing anything worse. Spare yourself the pain and save yourself two hours. I'd rather mow the lawn or something than have to sit through Friend Request again.

Mother! (2017)
What Did I Just Watch?
23 September 2017
Mother! didn't make much sense. It made me pretty anxious. It felt like I was watching someone's nightmare or having a bad acid trip. It's definitely unique and it made me feel things I've never felt while watching a movie. I've not heard many good things about it, but I don't think it's terrible. Though I appreciate Aronofsky's noble effort to introduce the avant-garde to mainstream audiences, I just don't think they're quite ready for it. I think the poor reception was mostly the result of poor marketing. If I saw it at an art-house theater, like the Laemmle or Cinefamily, I'd probably feel different about it and would have had a better idea of what to expect. I think that seeing it at a big ol' commercial AMC downtown really threw me off. It was like the movie Brazil, add a little bit of City of Lost Children, mixed with equal parts Jacob's Ladder and Eraserhead. I'm definitely feeling weirded out by it still. I don't think I'd watch it again, but I'd say it's worth seeing.

Shut Eye (2016– )
Great Show To Binge Watch
14 December 2016
I wasn't sure what I'd think of this show and at first glance, and to be honest, I didn't even want to give it a shot. I was bored one night and gave up on Walking Dead, so I took a chance. Glad I did! After the first episode, I couldn't stop watching it and I ended up finishing the whole season in like 3 days or so. So many ups and downs! I was gritting my teeth the whole time I was watching it. I'm from LA and I really like TV shows that take place here for some reason. It's cool to see my own neighborhood on TV. I don't want to give anything away, but I really hope Hulu picks it up for a second season. The last scene of the final episode had me crapping my pants.
