Hei hai ba wang hua (1990)
One of Yukari Oshima's best...although you can't tell at first!
After an exciting opening, BRAVE YOUNG GIRLS kicks in...sort of. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good action-thriller, but the first half of it plays out like a cautionary made-for-TV movie. It centers on three girls who find themselves trapped in lives as Triad-controlled prostitutes, which can be best described as modern-day slavery. Salvation comes to help them in the form of an Interpol detective (Yukari Oshima from "FINAL RUN" and "MIDNIGHT ANGEL") who wants to save them and break the gangsters. Be forewarned: the martial arts action in this movie is as brutal as it gets, and Yukari shows why she's an unsung legend in international action films! (There is also a brief cameo by Kara-Hui Yin-Hung, "MY YOUNG AUNTIE" herself, kicking the snot out of some bad guys!)
Yue gui xing dong (1990)
Much-better-than-average Hong Kong action-comedy...but still uneven!
You know what I mean. Hong Kong action comedies tend to veer wildly from bloody action to goofy humor...and just about everything else in-between! THAT'S MONEY isn't much different, but it's way better than most. The plot centers on a Triad gangster ripping off his former boss' money-men, and a P.I. firm is hired to play stalking horse and catch the gangster with a lot of cash as the lure. Long story short, the P.I.'s end up with the money by accident, with the renegade gangster and his boss looking to get it back! Fortunately, the good guys have VERY able support in the form of the lead P.I.'s girlfriend/secretary(!) (Yukari Oshima, "FINAL RUN" and "ANGEL") and his sister (Kara Hui Yin-Hung, "8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER" and "MY YOUNG AUNTIE")! What more do you need to know? Go see it!
