Madea Goes to Jail (2009)
Some enjoyment, But Not Better than the play
The play had me laughing up a storm. This film had laughs far and few in between. I saw a lot of potential with MADEA in JAIL but it never panned out! Maybe TYLER is putting them out too fast because this could have been funny in the parts that were supposed to be funny. But it seems like every time I was about to set my self up for hilarity, the payoff wasn't funny. Nice to see KEISHA given a chance to shine. This may be Tylers most successful, but it is not as good as Diary or Why Did I Get Married.
Tyler says he wants DIANA ROSS, Ben Kingsley, Kimberly Elise and CICELY Tyson for a movie that would be a total departure from this type of typical formula. Hope this works to have the magnificent DIANA ROSS back on screen clashing with the devastating CICELY TYSON would be film history worth watching. They both were nominated for an Oscar at the same time back in the early 70s.
The Family That Preys (2008)
Tyler Brings It
The movie was enjoyable. Tyler has a knack for making dramedies in a soap opera-like fashion but I don't mind, as long as its a good story and good actors the soapish feel shouldn't matter. It is so good to see our black actors working and Tyler Perry is a great catalyst for this!
The Good: The actors. Sanaa, Cole, Alfre, Robin, Taraji and Kathy are pitch perfect. Tyler is getting better as an actor.
The OK: The Plot was pretty good. I would have liked it tightened up and a little bit more edge but it was good. The Alfre Kathy trip for me was inconsequential.
The Bad: Nothing really bad but some of the stuff was a little hard to swallow like the "party" scene and two characters disappearing for a rendezvous. Why then Why there? Also the money in the bank account. Trust me there are more ways to hide that!
Why Did I Get Married? (2007)
Tyle Movies is Good for Fans
I am a Tyler Perry fan and as an African American filmmaker, I respect his success. Moreso, it was good to see African-Americans on films in a classy visual. Fans will like this movie a lot. Looking at it from my technical film school eye, there were definitely certain flaws with dialogue. It's not a slapstick comedy so some of the dialogue was over the top and unrealistic in this type of movie. The whole plane scene in particular rubbed me the wrong way. If I was watching scary movie or little man, I would accept it. The scene would have worked better in that type of comedy movie but didn't truly fit here with all the other story plots. Other than that complaint, it's good to see a nice black film and even better to see "US" getting out and supporting it in droves.
