I was wrong for expecting more...
I won't be long. I am a huge fan of the band, and I stayed a little disappointed figuring out that the movie is mostly about Ian's sentimental life.
Romanticizing Curtis probably made a horde of new fans, but I think there must have been more depth in that person than the film showed.
Not to mention other characters that are so poorly given trough the movie it seemed a bit strange...
I did like some scenes, I still recommend the film, especially if it will make one a fan of Joy Division!
And please, do watch 24 hour party people...I was amazed by the character of T. Wilson who seemed like quite a prick in this film. In 24 hour party people Tony was described as a ludistic character capable of inventing quite a lot...
Oprosti za kung fu (2004)
Croatian movie industry (if there is, in fact such a thing) has suffered a lot through the time of consolidation, but the most recent results show certain improvement, at least when it comes to the creative energy that bursts from this movie.
"oprosti za kung fu" is a dark comedy showing the tragedy of primitivism, but also shows the natural humor of Croatian rural element. Places that the director Svilicic chose for filming are great in their nudity, and actors are very natural and expressive. What I appreciated the most is a keen contrast between humorous and tragic element.
When young Mira comes back to her modest home after time spent in Germany, and also pregnant she will be faced with the harsh life back with her parents who desperately try to find her a husband suitable for her delicate situation, of course against her will. Tis will lead to numerous absurd and tragic situations, especially after the child is born.
I really liked this movie and would recommend it as such to anyone who appreciates a good laugh.
Kajmak i marmelada (2003)
could be better
I really have to admit that I have expected more of Branko Djuric in this movie. Branko Djuric was and is a synonym for humor in the "West Balcans", as well as in Slovenia where he moved in the beginning of the War. What he did back in the 80's was a highlight of Yugoslav humor, and that is why I expected more.
Moresover, because almost half of Slovenians went to the cinema to watch this movie, so did I as well, but I was kind of disappointed. The storyline is boring and predictable, the characters are stereotypical, and it isn't all that funny at all. I know that some might say that this movie wasn't supposed to be all about comedy, and that it deals with some kind of stereotypes, but I cannot help thinking that Djuro could have made this film better.
Actually, what I liked the most was the scene in the restaurant, that one was really good, but the rest of the film was pretty uninteresting. Dragan Bjelogrlic as good as always.
I hope the next film that Djuro makes will be better! 6/10
No Man's Land (2001)
No man's land is a great film
So much I have read, so much has been written about this academy award movie, but it's still somewhere in the dark. Any why is that?
Probably because it doesn't fit in the usual concept of a movie today. And that is: watch it, be amused and by tomorrow forget about it. Living in Croatia and understanding the war horror that occurred in former Yugoslavia isn't the only reason why I mark this film with a high grade. This film isn't just about tragedy in the Balcans. It's actually about human nature.
Although people that don't understand our language(s) might miss something that puts this movie in a special kind of humorous mood, the general concept always remains the same. It's a film about humanity. It's shows us how EVERY war is absurd, with only losers involved. Special feature of this movie is objectiveness...there is no usual bad guy-good guy classification..there are no pathetic tones we see everyday in a common war movie. the only thing present here is the reality of innocent people who were pushed to kill each other.
Batman Begins (2005)
I am not such a fan of action movie blockbusters, so I usually avoid these kind of movies, but really, what I have seen last night while watching Batman surprised me pleasantly. I thought that the concept of batman was overexploited, but what really attracted me was directing of Nolan, and Christian Bale as a new, and much more suitable batman. When I red somewhere that Nolan wants to do a movie resembling to Blade runner I already had some idea that it wasn't going to be all about non intelligent plot and shallow characters with tons of effects... Christian Bale is more than a promising actor. he really has the intelligence and the charisma to play such, as almost any other character. I'd say that he is a true batman, not just a bat like creature, but the real person and a lively pictured character. In this movie we get to know what is beneath the costume and a lot of gadgets. I also liked Gary Oldman's performance as well as I liked Caine's. This movie will also be interesting to all fans of Miller's batman. It's so much closer to the comic. This is not a perfect, but a very good movie!
Not so good as I have expected
The Criminal wasn't at all what I have expected it to be. This film is actually full of clichés, both the characters and the plot are very pale, especially in the part of the movie when everything gets "complicated" in such manner that we don't have a clear idea who is doing what, when and where. I was also a bit disappointed in Diego Luna, I thought he would be better in this movie especially after I saw his good performance in Tu mama tambien. What annoyed me the most was the end that came too abruptly and without any logical explanation....maybe the script needed some further elaboration. I would recommend it to you if you are absolutely bored and without any idea what to do.
Fine mrtve djevojke (2002)
A very good movie
Fine mrtve djevojke or Fine Dead Girls is a really promising movie showing talent of a young director Dalibor Matanic. In some ways it is a very accurate picture of the Croatian society today. In the spotlight we see two girls (Olga Pakalovic and Nina Violic) that are looking not only for the apartment to live in, but also a place where they could lead their lives as they want to. People that they meet, and the events that occur are as dark as realistic. The palette of characters is very interesting, although I was very pleased with the performance of Inge Appelt who played the old woman. A fine dose of humor is very well mixed with scenes of brutality. Definitely a good movie that i would recommend to anyone.
