Great show - if you can stomach it
DISCLAIMER: This show depicts sexual relations between a lesbian couple and a gay couple. There is some very graphic sex and nudity (including heterosexual). If all this is likely to offend, it is best to steer clear.
Now that's out of the way, I would just like to say that this was an extremely enjoyable series.
I loved the premise and the way it was implemented was very clever in my opinion. I am knocking off one point only because I felt that some of the interactions between the sensates seemed a little too contrived and convenient at times.
Some great character building and some slow-burning story developments mix very well with some fantastic action set pieces which really make it clear that the Wachowskis are in charge here.
Some of the sex and violence is quite graphic but if you can handle that I would highly recommend this series to anybody who enjoys sci-fi and drama.
The Children (2008)
If you are a parent or an adult who spends a lot of time with children and who has a true empathy and understanding of them, I would advise caution before you decide to watch this film. Particularly if you are a parent of small children.
If the above does not apply then you may very well find this film not at all scary and even ridiculous.
But parents will get it and I think that as a result they will be the ones that find this film affects them the most and for Mum and Dad it might even prove too hard to watch. You have been warned! A lot of reviews and posts so far have been busy pointing out one flaw after another and I will hazard a guess that these people are definitely not parents. Some of the criticisms aimed at The Children here would never come from any parent or guardian of small children.
Having said all this, I would not go so far as to say that this is a perfect horror film (if such a thing even exists). I found that some of the quick editing (whilst very effective for the most part)made it difficult to take in what was happening on the screen and some of the conversation pieces near the beginning felt a bit padded. One development at the end of the movie was also a little contrived and illogical but that is really the only valid criticism of the story that I can make and to me it didn't detract from the overall experience at all.
However, once the main premise of the film kicks in the pace is relentless and I think that the progress of events and the actions of the main characters are completely natural and believable given the circumstances. I think most parents would agree with me on this one.
In summary, I was left deeply affected by this movie. So a warning - if a parent, guardian or any other person with deep emotional connection and understanding of children is thinking of watching this movie make sure that you feel up to it. There are some pretty disturbing things portrayed here and you need to be sure that you can handle that. If you can, then this movie should creep you out and stay with you after viewing.
