Best Action Film of the Year
OK, I know most of your are thinking that pirates is the Best Action Film of the Year. But I disagree. I have never felt so pumped up in a movie, until I saw Crank. Everything about this movie is fantastic. The editing, the way it is filmed, the acting, the violence, memorable scenes, even his ring tone! I'm gonna start off with the acting. A low budget film means a small cast. Probably about 3-4 Main Characters. But this tiny cast packs quite a punch. Statham gives the best performance i've ever seen him in, and I think he was the perfect role for Chev Chilios. Amy Smart, who is one of my favorite sort-unknown actresses. You may remember her from The Butterfly Effect. Well she is just as awesome in this film as Chev's supportive girlfriend. Plus she delivers probably the best sex scene in the history of film.
Now the action. Think, Grand Theft Auto mixed with Run Lola Run, and you got the breathtaking action in this film. The stunts are wild and look like they could never be done by anyone. Statham kicks major ass in this film. Breaking bones, limbs flying off, crazy car accidents, and very cool gun play. The best part about it is, the action is constant. You get 90 mins of non-stop action. There is no intro, about 5 mins of talking scenes throughout the film, and the rest is hardcore, bloody action! Finally, the others. The directing is very well done as is the script. Which were both done by the two same guys. I think they make a great team and hope to see something like this again in the future. The editing is brilliant and reminds me of Snatch and Man on Fire. The cinematography is great. Camera angles are unique and different. Lastly, the special effects. They're not Star Wars or King Kong, but they're good. They do look obviously fake though. I think the directors wanted it that way, to make the audience laugh at how ridiculous some special effects look.
In the end, it felt like I got a 90 minute Adrenaline rush.
Note: The soundtrack is BRILLIANT!
Silent Hill (2006)
The Best Horror Film of the Year!
If you love the Silent Hill video games, you will absolutely love the film. Although it doesn't relate to any one game, but it is a whole new story itself while containing locations and monsters from the series.
Pros: So the story is simple. A mother is looking for her daughter who is lost in Silent Hill. While she is searching for her, she encounters some of the most ghastly creatures in film history, and is in the most horrific locations you will ever see. The background behind the storyline is a complex one so close attention is needed but once you get the hang of things, you will aboslutely crave more info on what is going on.
Cons: The acting for some of the characters is just plain bad. You will actually laugh at how horrible it is. There are many walking scenes which could be downright removed from the film. The special effects are great in some scenes but look horrid in others.
Conclusion: Definitely one of the better films of 2006. (We are going at a bad start so far). So if you have'nt played the games, bring a fan with you or research it because it is vital. All in all, a wonderful horror movie.
King Kong (2005)
Ladies and Gentlemen...Kong
This is hands down, the best Picture of the year. No 3 hour movie in my life has delivered so much excitement, that it feels only about 2 hours. No film has ever had such amazing effects that make you feel like you are on this island, with these crew mates. You will not see anything better this year.
The story starts off during the Great Depression. Jack Black plays Carl Denham, a filmmaker searching for his one gig to make him a millionaire. After his picture fails with his sponsors, he quickly picks up Naomi Watts who plays Ann Darrow, and asks her to go to an island and star in his film. The entire voyage to the island expresses the growing relationship between Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody who plays Jack Driscoll, the writer of the film. Shortly afterwards, they arrive on the island and are overrun by cannibals. They escape but Naomi Watts gets captured and sacrificed to Kong.
The crew of the ship begins their search for Naomi Watts. This is where the fun begins. At least 25 people search for her, and almost all of them are dead within an hour. Either they got stepped on by giant dinosaurs, fell off of a 1000 foot cliff, got slammed into walls by Kong, or were eaten alive by bugs, Peter Jackson makes sure you see these people meet their doom, and boy do a lot of people meet their doom. I stopped counting after 400.
So, you probably already know the story if you are planning to see this film. So you probably know Kong is captured and taken to New York. After being shown like an toy to an audience, he escapes, kills almost everyone in the theater, and gets out onto the New York streets. Here he begins his search for Naomi Watts. He picks up a whole bunch of blonde girls, and if they're not Naomi, he throws them into brick buildings with all of his might.
So, the finale. The thing that almost brought a tear to my eye. (I have never cried in a film.) Kong is on top of the Empire State Building. He's filled with bullet holes. He's crying. Naomi is crying. The theater is crying. Then he drops, and the credits roll.
So there you have it. The must see film of the year. Where every death will make you cringe and every roar will make your ears hurt. Enjoy while it's in theaters. You'll never experience anything like it. That is until the next Kong film.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Exhilarating Gore Fest of Fun
I love zombies. I think zombies are the greatest thing ever thought up. And the zombies in this movie kick ass! This is definitely the most realistic zombie movie out their. It doesn't have everyone in it be an ex-marine or something. It just has real civilians. The story follows up with a group of people locking themselves in a mall during a zombie outbreak across the globe. The mall scenes are great but the scene with them getting to the mall is so fantastic. The main girl gets home and goes to bed with her boyfriend. Then the next morning her boyfriend is bitten and transforms into a zombie. So for 15 minutes shes dodging zombies in the street and people are trying to get into her car and then she crashes and the opening credits begin. NOw I've never seen a movie with an intro like that. Afterwards the survivors are just picked off one by one until the end the entire population is replaced. This is a definite for zombie fans and action fans. I recommend this movie so much. It beats the living hell out of the original. George Romero has got competition.
Scorsese at his Best
A truly remarkable film. This gangster film has style and really explains how it was done back in the day. Unlike in the Aviator this movie actually explains something.
Sam Rothstein(DeNiro)is a gangster who is an expert sports better. After a few years doing that he gets a chance to run a casino illegally. DeNiro accepts the agreement and meets lovely Sharon Stone, a beautiful women who just happens to be a gold digger. After a few years DeNiro's mafia family starts having trouble and he wants nothing to do with it. Then his wife starts hating him and his best friend Nicky Santoro(Pesci)is having trouble with everyone. DeNiro decides he wants to run the casino legally but everything is just way messed up.
Great performances abound. This movie delivers. I give it an A+. Definitely recommended.
Black Hawk Down (2001)
I happen to be a big war movie buff and this film is high up there with Saving Private Ryan and Platoon. Ridley Scott is great at capturing the action and does not fail in this film.
Josh Hartnett is Matt Eversmann, a soldier stuck in the war of Somalia in 1993. Him and his fellow soldiers are sent in to expose of two top Somalian generals when the mission goes haywire and every soldier is on the run shooting everything they see. The amazing thing about this movie has got to be the death count. After the drop in you could probably count a soldier or Somalian dying every 5 seconds. Some of the deaths can be graphic so those with the faint of heart please step away. After a whole day has gone by the battle still rages on and Josh Hartnett is left with about 15 men after 123 dropped in.
The only downside in this movie is that you don't really get to know these characters. I mean here are some of the top names in Hollywood and some of them die in the first 40 minutes.
This earns a solid A. Definitely recommended for those war buffs out there.
The Aviator (2004)
A Mediocre Telling Of Howard Hughes
Hands down this movie gave as much info on Howard that I could've read in a big worded coloring book. Other then that I absolutely enjoyed it. The acting is all their. Cate Blanchett is absolutely stunning by the way.
Let's start off with the premise. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Howard Hughes. The eccentric millionaire/Director/Airplane Designer. The entire first half of the movie which is about 1 hour and 45 minutes revolves around Howard Hughes going to parties and dating some women. Sounds boring? Well your right. It probably won an award at Bore Fest 2005 this year but if you can sit through this treachery the movie shines. It starts off by using everything that The People Vs. Larry Flynt used. It has Howard traumatized and completely changed from a devastating plane wreck and then he is goes to the downward spiral and lands in court for some naughty deeds. The courtroom scenes are quite pathetic I might add. Little emotion is shown in these scenes. And then it ends quite abruptly and that's about it.
So In the end what do we know? We know if you read a one page summary on Howard Hughes then you know pratically everything they tell you about him in the film. I would recommend for the big move buffs but for the small time movie goer stay away from the 3 hour behemoth.
American Beauty (1999)
A Masterpiece in The Art Of Film
I had serious doubts for this movie which I regret immediately after watching the first ten minutes of this remarkable film. Sam Mendes delivers this Family Portrait Romeo and Juliet esquire film with wonderful results.
Lester Burnham(Spacey)is a Father on the virge of a divorce and has a daughter he never gets a chance to talk to. Right next door lies the Fits family and their young filmmaker son. Both of these families are not fond of each other as they don't really get a chance to know each other. The movie breaks apart into 3 stories. Kevin Spacey and his ways of trying to put his family together, Annette Benning(Spaceys Wife)and her ways of being happy without her family, and Thora Birch and her love for the Fitt's son Ricky(Wes Bentley).
The acting is superb for the entire cast especially Spacey and Cooper. The art direction is superb and the director just did a fantastic job. This is definitely the best movie of 1999 and will go down in history as one of the best films of all time.
Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
Having not seen the original I cannot compare this movie to it's predecessor as others have (With bad results I must say) so I am just going to have to wing it. The movie follows Sgt. Jake Roenick(Hawke) on New Years Eve. It is his last day on the force and the last day in his police precinct as it is about to be torn down. Him and two other employees are spending the rest of the night there when in the middle of a snowstorm they get a call to house a notorious murderer (Fishburne)as his prison bus gets caught in a blizzard. Afterwards an unknown enemy comes to the police precinct to do who knows what to it and after all the terrorist renegades arrive it is all guns blazing.
The action is the standing point in this film. Memorable scenes are abound and special effects are expertly crafted. The acting can be sub par as some of the actors fail to express fear as much as they should. Twists are abound. The movie is very gripping and waiting for the next scene has anticipation. Near the end of the movie some of the scenes may get a little aggravating as the movie tends to repeat scenes in a different way. The ending could be better and I wish their was more realism.(The terrorists tend to die fairly easily from these people which only 3 of them have any real combat experience.) For the conclusion I will give this movie a solid B+. Definitely recommended for those who have not seen the original.
