The Maze Runner (2014)
Like a very simple version of Lord of the Flies
The Maze Runner is about trapped, teenage amnesiacs, who decide to run through a dangerous labyrinth to freedom.
There is tension between the lead and another guy, Gally, who both go for the leading role. In the end the good guy's friend is killed by the other boy. Sounds familiar. For an action/survival movie it's amusing enough, and regarding effects etc. it all feels well made. As for the plot, we weren't captivated.
So much could have been done with this scenario (overlooking the fact that it's based on a book). Young people in a lawless place. A great opportunity to explore human nature and make it incredibly interesting and creepy. Disapointingly, the Maze Runner doesn't go very deep. If tweens are the target audience (which I assume) this is understandable. Unless you're tired and in the mood for a simpler film, I wouldn't recommend this for adults though.
It's mostly about the running. Things are left unexplained in the end, so you will have to watch the following films to make sense of it.
