Shabd (2005)
sexy! visually stunning artwork!
this film epitomizes that you can make a sexy film without being tasteless!, i think that this beautiful movie will do a lot to bring about change in Indian cinema, and i applaud the actors for being courageous enough to tackle it. sanjay dutt, is a very impressive actor as he slowly descent into madness trying to bring his story to life by using his beautfil wife, he was simply brilliant and should have been Oscar nominated! miss rai too is very impressive in her role as the simple school teacher turned puppet by her insane husband, she conveys all the necessary range while tackling her role, you see her noble school teacher discovering that she does in fact have a very romantic side! she also looks fabulous in the movie as well, this film will one day be lauded as groundbreaking, and also a loving valentine to the beauty of aishwarya rai.
Satan Never Sleeps (1962)
France nuyen deserved better
when i first saw this film i wondered why wasn't Nancy kwan cast as the character of siu-lan so that her and bill holden could re-unite in another film, after seeing the movie and France nuyen i realized she would have been in deep water and didn't have the necessary talent to play the complex role of siu-lan, France nuyen was a revelation and made me finally see how vulnerability could pass across the screen .France nuyen and Clifton Webb are the only joys you can expect from this film, i think France should have had a better career, on film she was simply radiant in everyway, her acting was so natural and she had the most beautiful and expressive hands, okay! the film, i think the film could have been more successful had they not included the rape of France nuyen's character, by the time it happens the viewer has developed such caring for her that any violence that happens to her is unforgiven, her character is such a sweet girl who only wants to be loved, i think the writers could have let ho-san make his transformation from bad to good by seeing his parents killed, then at the end they could have let him and France nuyens character fall in love after he helps them all escape, why they felt to end the film on such a disturbing note is anyones guess, it's pretty sad because the film had so much potential, and Clifton Webb really gives his all in the movie, i think he and France really deserved so much more to work with than this .
The Mistress of Spices (2005)
aishwarya rai.....WOW!!
I really do not understand why people say this film wasn't good, i think that aishwarya is a target because her movies don't offer any steamy love scenes, although i must say to her credit, she and Dylan have a love scene that is probably the sexiest i've ever seen without kissing or nudity, she is like a breath of fresh air because she proves that an actress can make it without compromising her beliefs, my biggest wish is that people will take the time and give this woman and her films a chance, the acting in this film is so top-notched, it couldn't have been easy to make a film interesting were all the action takes place in a spice store , but it succeeds, also look out for the the black actors in this film, they were wonderful, the only flaw was padma lakshmi, she is the worst actress i've ever seen, to old for the part, and next to aishwarya she looks like a rusty old lawn chair.
Dorothy Dandridge: An American Beauty (2003)
could have been much better
i don't understand how can someone who has led the life that dorothy dandridge has could inspire such bland tributes, the two bio's written about her were awful and don't get me started on the awful movie about her that starred an inept halle berry giving a bloodless performance, now we have a tribute documentary that is just as boring and dull, it's a curiosity piece that is only important because it contains several of her musical shorts shown in clips of course and also it has footage of the historical night at the Oscars, but other than that i'd say this should be passed over because it offers no new interviews, or any other information that isn't already known, here's hoping that a new documentary, film and book come around to do justice to this beautiful talented star known as miss dorothy dandridge.
Cain's Hundred: Blues for a Junkman: Arthur Troy (1962)
beautiful Dorothy dandridge
Dorothy Dandridge stars as a Norma Sherman , she's a blues singer with a drug problem, i think the character boarders on Billie Holiday whom Dorothy was suppose to portray in a film directed by Orson Welles but it never came to fruition, Dorothy is very effective in the film and should have been awarded an Emmy for her brilliant performance, it's funny Dorothy looked at her career as a failure, but if she stopped to think about it, she pretty much accomplished every role and everything she ever wanted to do in film, sadly she was to die 3 years after this film was completed, a sad end to a beautiful brilliant star.
four stars
Now, Voyager (1942)
my favorite film
this is my all time favorite film, it stars Bette Davis as the emotionally crippled Charlotte vale the daughter of a very mean domineering woman ,who with the help of the kindly Dr Jaquith must find the strength to make her own way in the world, only Charlotte discover that having a life of her own doesn't come with out it;'s share of problems, when she falls in love with a man who cannot be hers, Bette is always brilliant when she plays the bitch but she is equally brilliant here playing the role of Charlotte vale, i also adored the girl who portrayed little Tina. this is a must see, bring two cigarettes, and a box of hankies and enjoy!
Moment of Danger (1960)
Dorothy's last movie
Dorothy finished up her film career with this great film about two drifters trying to find a jewel thief who has wronged them, Dorothy is very effective playing this world weary woman, because she herself was weary in her own life, she plays the part with no make-up and a not so becoming wig, but manages to look breath-taking none the less, i think her character Gianna is the best she ever played, even more than Carmen because the line between fact and fiction blurred in this, the rest of cast is also effective, Dorothy and Trevor worked well together, and should have been paired in another film.this is a hard to find film, but worth it to see Dorothy in her last film role.
