Furious 6 (2013)
Just A Bad Film
So much for the old phrase "quit while you're ahead." Quit after you've sucked every golden egg from the tired golden goose until you kill it might be the creators of Fast and The Furious philosophy.
I truly think that some die-hard fans are so fooled by there own limited views that they really think this thing is a good film. The sad thing is that they really believe the nonsense they are peddling. More's the pity. Apparently, they'd rather lie to both you and to themselves. If your thought process is child-like and you're not very intelligent, you may find Fast and Furious 6 to your liking but even then I have my doubts.
Awful at every turn.
Sin City (2005)
Overrated In Every Way
There's some kind of credit at the beginning of the film for "Special Guest Director: Quentin Tarantino." I mean, like it's not enough that every geeky comic book freak in the universe is going to be in line at this film opening night, Rodriguez has to create a bona fide spoogefest by offering up Tarantino's name like he's the "New Sucking Power" on Rodriguez's spiffy vacuum.
I'm all for shameless female nudity in movies, but Rodriguez trots out his actresses sort of like boxing promoters trot out ring girls between rounds. Hey, look, Rodriguez got the mom from "Spy Kids" to be butt-ass naked in a film. Then, the hooker played by Rosario Dawson is wearing a see-through top over a skin-colored piece of spandex and we're left to ponder the wording in her contract. Jaime King is naked. Jessica Alba isn't. It's kind of like breast roulette.
"Sin City" is not just an exercise in style over substance; it's a retread of a film that was itself a retread. Perhaps there's some lingo in postmodernism that would make that sound like an achievement, but I doubt it.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
morbid and depressing... not what I was expecting at all
I was kind of stunned at how morbid and depressing the film ended up being. The trailer makes it seem like something else. Anyone who tells you this is a great movie is just trying to get someone else to drop money on a middle of the road flick at best. Gatsby like a 20's Robin Hood robs from the poor and middle class to give to the rich... the rich movie studios. The true crime occurs at the box office when you hand over your money for admission. It's a great waste of a great cast but NOT a great anything else. What a large scale mess of a film that honestly ends VERY badly. The final act's final message is that hope is for suckers. What a great summer movie message don't you think?
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
This depressing and shallow mess is officially a disappointment of epic proportions
Will this add to TDK's legend? Sure, TDK was good but grew to be THE most overrated film of any genre because of the Ledger and Nolan fanboy InterLove. Now, TDKR delivers one of the most unmemorable and downright disappointing sequels ever put to film. Yes, it ranks right down there with Crystal Skull in terms of huge and head scratching let downs.
TDK was fine entertainment that may have gotten over-inflated and over-praised with the passage of time. Don't get me started about Batman Begins. The fact is that TDKR is another Batman Begins without the intrigue. Frankly, that makes Nolan's Batman trilogy a dull sandwich when you think about it. TDK is the meat and the first and now especially the third films are nothing but gummy Wonder Bread equivalents. I can't believe how shallow TDKR turned out despite them trying to jam everything in to the film. Unlike TDK, word of mouth will hurt TDKR because this mangled and often dumb film is a mess. A genuinely un-fun mess at that.
I know certain Nolan fanboys everywhere are circling the wagons to praise this movie but that in and of itself proves what I'm saying. Fanboys wanted to like it and apparently will look past all of its flaws. Everyone else is saying it's written like a shallow popcorn flick but with dull action sequences. There really is nothing special on display here and it's so much LESS than the second effort. How can a film follow something somewhat good with something this bad? It's not just the high expectations. It really is a bad film all on its own.
Yet, thanks to good trailers and a general fondness for TDK, this thing will take in big money early but leave a majority of the audience disappointed to say the least. If the viewer has at least half a brain, it's guaranteed that the actual movie is going to lead to general disappointment especially if you're not already a fan.
Overcrowded and cheesy fluff usually fizzles at the box office but TDKR is bulletproof at this point. The real judge of this movie will be general reaction and most are going to correctly label it a disappointment of epic proportions.
Man of Steel (2013)
HUGE Disappointment. Just A Bad Film Any Way You Slice It
The concept and character of Superman has been done to death on the silver screen. Yet, here we go again. Like the character, this movie doesn't know what it wants to be. It is advertised and sold as a piece of summer popcorn entertainment, but tries to be a "Gladiator" type film at the same time and ends up being neither. It's overly moody in a bad way. I always like Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner and they did the best he could given the material but that doesn't really equal anything special because their screen time is so brief. Both are gone from the film fast like they were cashing pay checks and their agents promised them they would have to spend more than seven days shooting this awful script. Was I expecting too much given this cast and director? I haven't been this disappointed since Crystal Skull hit like a bad punch to the gut.
It was really disappointing. I find it very hard to believe that any intelligent critic truly liked this film. I chalk the few positives up to blind love for the character itself or the flare of Zach Snyder and not his actual work this time around. Most of the critics hate it for a good reason. It's overtly dramatic and tries to play on sympathies that they just don't set up. Character driven? That is the most overused term, thrown around by those who don't know any better. If a character strings together more then four coherent lines people love to label the movie as "Character driven." The fact is, the characters aren't developed during this film. The movie is presented in such a hammer-handed fashion that you just want to cringe. It's all dumb video game action all the time. So sad.
Bottom line: wait for video. Don't get your hopes up. Some of this is interesting to watch but NONE of it can be classified as high quality in any way. You'll need your fast forward button if you're at all an intelligent movie fan.
