Waiting for God (1990)
More than just comedy ...
Yes I had to put a spoiler warning on this because I can not talk about this show with out expressing how educational it is on issues pertaining to the senior community. Always with enough humor to take the edge off, but still enough of a spotlight to get their point across. From senior sexual relations to "being dumped" by your family to cancer to diabetes to fraud prevention to death.
It takes a good long look at Europe's treatment of the elderly and offers a subtle warning of "someday this will be you too" ... not just age-wise but also health-care-wise.
This series is more than just being about cranky Diana & her loopy friend Tom, his boring son Jeffery & his drunk/slutty wife Marion, gypsy Harvey and the long-suffering Jane who pines for him.
I will guarantee you that if you get a chance to see this show you won't regret it and the story lines will stay with you years down the road.
Hammer of the Gods (2009)
Bad bad bad
Okay just a few quirks for myself here - if you are making a story of the Norse gods don't you think that at least one of the actors would have had a Nordic accent?? And the acting ... well it was good for the dialog, I suppose it could have been worse although I don't know how. I have to wonder if at any time during the production why no one went to the writers and demanded a rewrite. Now if you are going to make a story about a rich mythology, I would hope that someone at sometime would have done at least a little research about it ... I wouldn't be as upset except they made a point of using the name of every god or goddess they could muster - if it were a random bunch of Nordic names it would be one thing, but it was fairly obvious that these characters were meant to BE the Norse gods-- c'mon, get the attributes correct! Its like someone was playing Quake and wrote down all that happened and made it into a script. This is a movie that every Heathen will regret. Pass it by.
There are better shows out there
First I will acknowledge up front that I have not watched this show and from what I've seen of previews it is a poor mingling of several shows already seen in the market (and is more proof that Hollywood has no original ideas) ... this show is a cross between "Angel"(1999), "Kindred"(1996), and "Highlander:the series"(1992) to name a few. One scene I've seen is almost directly lifted from a scene involving Buffy & Angel ... and very similar to a scene in 'Kindred'.
If you want to see an **original** vampire series try to locate 'Kindred:The Embraced' which was supposed to be the launching of a new television series but the series was canceled when the main star died in an automobile accident - it truly gets into vampire lore, including explaining why there seems to be some disagreement of vampire lore.
If this was an attempt to carry out the original plan to have a 'kindred' TV series - from what I've seen they've failed miserably!
