Gypsy 83 (2001)
A Beautiful and Captivating film!
To the person that left the comment before me about the love scenes being soft-core porn I think that is ridiculous! The sex scenes were refreshing and tastefully done! Finally! A real woman being viewed as beautiful and enjoying sex. There is a love scene between Gypsy (Sara Rue) and a very a handsome fella named Zachariah(a rebel Amish). Also a gay love scene between Clyde(Gypsy's best friend) and Troy(typical frat guy in denial. They weren't gratuitous or at all out of place unlike so many big budget films that use sex irrelevantly for shock value. In fact, the sex itself portrays the characters vulnerability and desire more so than anything.
But this film was so much more than the love scenes. It's a film that covers these characters journey to self discovery. I'm a sucker for a good coming of age tale that truthfully and poignantly describes: What it's like to face the realization of your own identity and the unfair twists in life.
Sara Rue does her own singing and her voice is splendid! There is a scene where she sings a Stevie Nicks(her inspiration and reason for making the trek from her shitty small middle America town to NYC) song at a middle of nowhere karaoke bar and she totally nails it, after a bit of a nervous start, of course. I've never heard anyone replicate Ms. Nick's voice so well.
