The Stand (1994)
This movie is utter crap!
OK, I just saw The Stand last night, and it was absolute crap! For all of you who read the book before you rented the miniseries, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Okey Dokes, just a few small comparisons:
*in the book, Larry meets a woman called Rita in New York, and meets Nadine in some other place (can't quite remember where), and she has Joe with her. Then they meet Lucy in Maine.
*Joe tries to kill Larry when he first meets him. Joe also has Downes Syndrome. Why did this get left out of the movie?!?
*Fran's mother is alive, and we find out that Fran is pregnant in the first page she's on. Fran also has a boy, NOT a girl, who she name Peter after her deceased father.
*Kojak is an Irish Setter, not a Golden Retriever.
*Trashcan Man, one of the only characters who was well cast, was picked up by a psychopath in a monster truck that called himself "The Kid", on the way to Vegas.
*Dayna Jurgens is part of a "travelling Harem", who were captured by some men on their way to Vegas and raped on a regular basis.
*Nick befriends the cop and his wife in Shoyo, and two of the prisoners die of Captain Trips In Jail, and Ray Booth leaves town before he's arrested, but comes back and temporarily half-blinds Nick. The doctor in Shoyo catches Captain Trips and dies.
*Harold is fat and has a really bad acne problem, not weedy with two zits.
*Harold leaves signs everywhere, e.g. barn roofs, telling people where they're going. Larry follows these.
*Fran keeps a diary. Harold reads it, then finds out that Fran loves Stu, not him. Harold then starts a ledger, and it's not until then that he really starts to go bad.
*Joe is actually called Leo, and is quite a good musician.
*Many characters are missing from the movie, or have been combined with others
*Randall Flagg gets reincarnated in some third world country in the end of the book
*Lucy has twins
*Frannie, Stu and Peter move back to Mother Abagails farm, then presumably back to Maine, which is what Fran wanted to do towards the end of the book.
*Tom looked about 20-ish, and it isn't until later on that we find out that he's in his 40s.
*Lloyd eats the rat by the third day in his cell, and half eats his cell mate's left leg.
*There was a chapter in the book where we found out about the "second epidemic", which are the accidents. about 16% of the American population immune to Captain Trips die of this. In said chapter, we read about 7 or so of these accidents. OK, so it's not completely relevant, but it would've been pretty interesting viewing.
Right, now that I've had my little rave, some of my general opinions of the film/miniseries:
*Only three of the characters were well cast- Trashcan Man, Lloyd and Charlie Campion.
*A few of the characters were OK, but not that great: Dayna, Larry, Glen, Gina, the little girl with the broken arm (leg in the book), and the army guy that kills himself about halfway through the film.
All in all, the bad qualities outweighed the good stuff, which has led me to give this 2 stars out of a potent-ail 10. basically, THIS BLOWS! Worse than ripping out your fingernails, except for the scenes with Trashy. Why have we not seen more of this guy?
