The White Sister (1923)
Excellent. Brilliant performance from Lillian Gish
Exciting story of two lovers of war torn Italy. Lillian Gish plays the daughter of a Prince whose sister hates her. Ronald Colman plays an army officer whose brother is a Professer determined to discover the secret of the volcano the town rests upon. When Lillian's father is killed when he falls off his horse her sister inherits everything, banishing Lillian from the palace. Ronald goes on an expedition to Africa only after Lillian promises to marry him when he return and is supposedly killed. This movie starts off a bit slow but then picks up rapidly. An excellent movie which I'd highly recommend to all silent movie buffs or Lillian Gish and Ronald Colman fans.
The Miser's Heart (1911)
Surprisingly enough entertaining
It is very interesting to see Lionel Barrymore in an early role. This film is one D.W. Griffith's best shorts equipped with good acting, humor, suspense, and crime. It starts off introducing you to a little girl and her sick mother. The Miser is introduced when he gives the little girl some bread. Lionel Barrymore is Jules, the thief who is forced to leave town by the Police. Not being able to resist the temptation Jules steals bread on his way out of town. He hides on a roof, soon accompanied by the little girl. Taking a liking to the girl Jules gives the girl some bread, not realizing the dangerous situation the girl will soon be in. A MUST see for all film buffs or Lionel Barrymore fans.
Grand Hotel (1932)
Joan Crawford is superb as always. GREAT film!
I really enjoyed GRAND HOTEL. I thought everyone did a great job in this movie (except Greta Garbo.) I'm a big fan of Joan Crawford and thought she did a way better job then Greta Garbo. Greta Garbo was dreadful; (as always) I just can't believe she became so famous. I think Joan should have been nominated for an academy because I thought she was great. John Barrymore was really good in this as well. I started to hate his character when he went for Greta instead of Joan. It was a bit corny when John comes into Greta's room attempting to steal her jewels and Greta falls in love with him. I mean come on. Anyway Grand Hotel was an excellent movie and everyone should see it.
The Lady Vanishes (1938)
An absolutely dreadful film
I usually enjoy Alfred Hitchcock's movies but this one was just terrible! Probably Alfred Hitchcock's WORST movie (although Frenzy was pretty awful.) Absolutely no suspense and was difficult to follow. I can't believe so many people like it. The quality of the picture was awful, I could barely make out what they were saying and see on the screen what was going on. I was surprised this movie was made in 1938 because I've seen earlier movies then 1938 and the quality of the picture is way BETTER. GRAND HOTEL was made in 1932 and I absolutely loved it. The quality of the picture was amazing for that year and way better then THE LADY VANISHES. One word of warning to anyone thinking of seeing THE LADY VANISHES. It's complete rubbish.
