Way to blow an intro!!
Negan is by far one of the best characters in the comics, so fans of the show were salivating when it was announced that he would be making his introduction in the season 6 finale. The show built the entire second half of the season around his introduction. The episode was a slow build, but viewers I'm sure were ready to cut it some slack because Negan was going to show up and someone was going to die. While Negan walking out of the RV was pretty sweet and his speech was bad ass, that's where it ended. Literally. We were given a lacklustre massage and jipped on the happy ending to boot.
I could look past the fact that Negan and his people somehow knew that Rick would be travelling to the Hilltop that day and that they have enough time, resources and manpower to block every single road but to squander what was billed as "insanely hardcore, scary, action packed and very emotional" episode is just dumb. For me, this episode ruined what I was looking forward to for 6 seasons. How is driving around in an RV for 85 minutes hardcore or action packed? Emotional... yes. Fans were furious but not for the reason they were expecting.
This episode felt like AMC was willing to cut off its nose to spite its face. Cheaping out on an episode to ensure that people will tune in for future ones seems ridiculous.
At this point, I'm sure the person on the end of Negan's bat will be someone the fans have little or no emotional connection to. The producers bill this as a show where no one is safe but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I really liked this show but it looks like producers are starting to write for ratings at the expense of story these days. Too bad.
