The Squid and the Whale (2005)
saw this one at sundance.
i went and saw this movie at the tower theater in downtown salt lake a few days ago. it won best dramatic direction at sundance so they screened it for people who managed to get tickets to "best of fest 2005." on to the movie, i came into the theater and had no idea what was going to be playing but as soon as the title showed up, "the squid and the whale" i was wondering why i didn't give my ticket to the poor people outside waiting.
but the movie started and was really funny at the beginning. especially "ivan," frank's tennis coach. there's a running gag in the movie with this guy and it cracked me up every time, especially when the little kid picked up on the habit and did it too later in the film.
then as soon as it pulled me in it turned into this crude view of divorce. i am not a critic so i am going to say what this movie impacted on me the most.
Jeff Daniels character in this movie is so intense and i didn't feel for him much until he had a conversation with his ex wife (laura linney) about a conversation he had with his dad.
that moment touched me the most and made this movie one of the best i'd seen in a while (as far as independent films go.) the last reviewer already spoiled a lot from the movie but trust me, if you get a chance to see this film. do it. especially if you like pink floyd..."i feel like i could have written it, the fact that i didn't was a technicality." adiós!
