Pro Wrestlers vs Zombies (2014)
It is quite fun
You know, with a title like Pro Wrestlers vs Zombies we already kinda know what this movie is supposed to be about. It's not even the first movie that goes in that direction, since there are at least "Monster Brawl" and "Zombie King and the Legion of Doom". With those two movies in mind, i was a c- to d-quality movie and it pretty much is what i got. But the movie is fun and Roddy Piper is just a blast. Every scene with him is directly ten times better. Besides Roddy there is not too much great stuff in it. Kurt Angle's short appearance was nice and i quite liked the Matthew Rush in it, as they seemed to have a really great time playing there roles. The other actors were fun too, but Shane Douglas really tried to act too much.
All in all, for what it is supposed to be, i think this movie is okay for a watch, but only if you are into that kind of low budget movie.
Death Machine (1994)
Death Machine is just great. It got good effects, a good enough story, some good laughs and the acting is pretty nice. It's about a company that is illegally on working weapons made out of humans by resetting their brain, while their mastermind is working on something very different in the background. First of all. The acting is great on all parts. No matter if it's Ely Pouget, who gives her Hayden some real depth and still shows us, what a real bad-ass of the 80ies and 90ies looked like. With Carpenter and Ridley we have 2 characters that we are supposed to hate and we kinda do. We just also love them for their craziness. But the real star of course is always Brad Dourif. He just needs to enter the room and within seconds, he already got everyone into his role. He is pure over the top crazy, but it is just awesome, as you can see how much fun he had. The most important thing besides that, are the effects. No matter if we are talking about the gore, which is rare but effective, or stuff like the monster. The effects are great and still look great today. With the score, the camera and the fast cuts, this creates are very nice atmosphere that lets you fear for characters and celebrate Dante whenever you see him.
All in all this is a really great movie, that you should already just watch, if you are a fan of Dourif in any way, or if you are into horror at all.
Murder Party (2007)
Sometimes gruesome, but most of the time funny
When i started to watch Murder Party, i was definitely expecting a pretty typical horror movie, since neither the plot, nor the poster would promise anything more. But as soon as Chris follows the invitation and we get to know our "bad guys", you begin to realize that this is really not your typical movie. First i'd like to praise the team behind the movie, because, even though you can see the low budget sometimes (mostly when we are outside), it really looks like a higher budget. The camera-work is fine and it never gets boring. Saulnier always seems to know when there would be a possible moment of boredom and so he levels up the tempo and gives us some action. The effects are pretty good too and never feel cheap. The other part i want to praise are the characters, which don't have too much depth, but never feel like cardboard. They all feel unique and have their own quirks. This also contains the acting, as they all are acted really well and everyone seems to have a great time doing his job. My favorites are the beautiful Lexi and Macon, which are both people that i'd like to be friends with (without the killing though^^).
In short: A great movie for Halloween, which just is fun from the beginning to the end. Kudos to Saulnier for making such a great movie. I will be looking forward to his new movie Green Room.
Found Footage done right
Exists is a good example for found footage done right. It isn't as annoying as i found many of those movies to be, with Evidence and Area 407 being some of the worst i've seen. The characters act understandable most of the time. They mostly try to survive and don't try to be the hero. The most important part for me though, is that there really aren't any obnoxious characters, shouting the whole movie just crap, like in my 2 examples. Another important point for me is the quality of the visuals and the effects. WETA did a good job with the special effects and everything about it looks really good. And the movie looks great. It's no "we do found footage, because we can't buy a good camera" movie. Sánchez used good cameras and he also clearly liked the work with a GoPro on his segment for V/H/S2.
In short: It's a good looking found footage movie about Bigfoot, without super annoying characters. Definitely worth a watch, if you'd ask me.
