Argento in L.A.
I refused to watch this remake for over a year now because i really love the original by William Lustig. I am far from expecting anything of a remake of a horror/splatter classic nowadays, but Alexandre Aja and Franck Khalfoun did an excellent job.
The new version of Maniac has a strong European touch and that is the best that could happen to this remake. The deserted exteriors combined with the cold and chilling score plus the camera work reminded me of the golden age of Dario Argento's master pieces.
The performance of Elijah Wood is scary and profound. There gore-scenes are state of the art but still have a real sleazy touch to them. The marginal changes in story and setting are creating a fine piece of horror that stands for it's own. Alexandre Ajas Maniac breathe it's own kind of horror.
This is how a horror/splatter remake should be done.
