American History X (1998)
One of the best movies ever made!
I loved this movie, so well written so beautifully portrayed. This movie made me watch the whole of it in one breath.. it was so powerful. I am not even from the US, never lived there.. but the movie carried a universal message for everyone. I do not intend to really reveal much here about the plot, except to say this story is amongst you, you have heard it, you have seen it around but while watching it through the beautifully artistic eyes of Tony Kaye and through intense, amazing performances of the always amazing Ed Norton, Edward Furlong, and Beverly D'Angelo, you would enjoy it as if you have never had that perspective. This is the beauty of this movie. I could sound overstate its greatness, but i waited 4 months after watching it the first to write a review here, so that I don't really come out & speak out of the immediate after effects. A clean 9/10.
Man's Favorite Sport? (1964)
One of the best comedies ever
This movie is one of the finest comic films in my opinion and not surprisingly made by the super genius, Howard Hawks. The story is about Roger Willoughby who is a famous fishing expert having written a book about it, but ironically never fished in his life. The movie centres around a fishing competition where Roger has to participate thanks to his eccentric boss (the great John McGiver) who got convinced by Abigail Page (Paula Prentiss), PR exec at a rest house where the fishing competition takes place. What happens afterwards are a series of funny incidents, all sure to make you feel cheerful & rolling in laughter. Some comic scenes are very clever and very funny (I can't seem to find such funny movies these days), especially scenes of Roger trying to actually fish and those involving Mr. Phipps (Roger's client who learned fishing from him but never wanted to pay for $1,5 for it).
Totally enjoyed the beautiful story and the lovable characters. I fell in love with Paula Prentiss, she's such a marvellous beauty... and so funny too. Her character exudes naiveté at the same time subtle evil vibes throughout. I can't even begin to compare her with some of the female comic actors in the business today. Rock Hudson is a perfect fit to the 'phoney' Roger and does a neat job till the end. Other characters Hawks builds are equally hilarious... I have a huge, long playlist and little time for movies, but I know for sure I am going to watch this movie again & again when I really want to cheer up. Love it! if you enjoy clever humour, with a light heart of course, this movie will certainly make you happy too. Go for it!
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
One of the most frightening films ever
This movie is serious business, very frightening experience to say the least. Since I am someone who always wanted to make a documentary of my own, I could relate to it more but I am pretty sure, all of us film ourselves during such expeditions these days. The film triumphs in two areas. One in consuming your entire attention span to travel with these three characters, the other in presenting it to you in a more believable, frightening manner (pieced through amateur footage) This movie is an influential work because it then spawned a slew of similarly made movies (although Cannibal Holocaust was made earlier, this seemed more real and entertaining to this day and age). I thoroughly enjoyed the horror aspect of this movie, and I am not someone who finds horror movies very shaking (Except for The Exorcist, of course) but this was quite scary. I felt mind- numbing frustration in situations when the main characters' spirit & tolerance started to decline, and slowly begin to realize how meek, insignificant we are if we are not part of our society or within our comfort zone or left it the dark with an unknown fear factor, with very crazy things happening around you but you can't see or tell what it is. The makers manage to infuse terror in a very natural way too, that's the main success feature of the film. I feel sorry for some viewers in this forum who couldn't enjoy the film because they were trying to make 'sense' out of the characters shooting such frightening situations, calling it unrealistic etc. Probably why IMDb has a low rating for this movie too. It never bothered me, my suggestion is either you don't notice it/disregard it OR you look at film as their passion, or something humans can do in hopeless situations (ie, if I know my fate is sealed in such a terrifying situation, I would consider filming myself so that the world gets to know what happened to me someday, now that I can't save myself anymore). Watch the early interviews with locals carefully (real people) for you to understand the ending very well. Excellent movie. Definitely goes down as one of my all favourites. Cannot think of a major flaw.
Life with Mikey (1993)
A happy, feel-good movie
I love this movie - Michael J Fox and Nathan Lane, you wouldn't expect anything but genuine comedy. The entry of this movie is one of the reasons why I do not want to give much respect to IMDb ratings. Everyone wants to be an arty or an intellect here, when movies like these (though not very intellectual, having brilliant entertainment value sans rubbish) get lost with low ratings.
There are some insanely funny scenes - at the same time there are some wonderfully touching moments as well. I watched this movie 10 yrs ago - I love it now as much as I loved it back then. The atmosphere of the film is simple, entertaining and funny.
This is a must watch, if you enjoy light-hearted, genuinely funny comedies. Very good movie 9/10
My Blueberry Nights (2007)
Great music, beautiful women, seamless storyline - overall, a good watch!
My Blueberry Nights has been lying in my wish list for a while. One reason why I wanted to watch it was because it was listed as a road movie in Wikipedia. I am a sucker for this genre. There are three things that are commendable about this movie. The direction is definitely worth mentioning. Well, there may be some flaws in depicting American life on screen but how much do you expect an all Chinese director to know about it, anyway! I must say, he did wonderful job in pulling the story together till the end. The slow-mo sequences are annoying but they are supposed to do the job showing you the pace of time-line and changing focus. Some scenes meant to surprise are just for style, otherwise dysfunctional and look outrightly corny at times. Two, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman are simply amazing actors who gave the movie the much needed substance that was lacking from the beginning. Norah Jones is lovely. I cannot really comment on her acting as she really didn't have much to do in the movie. Thirdly, the last kiss. It was worth all the boring, corny scenes in the movie. An honorable mention is the soundtrack. Norah Jones has mesmerizing vocals and some tracks gelled so well with the scenes. A few more downsides. Jude Law was disappointing as his character lacked any novelty or touch of reality. Dialogues are too straight forward and clichéd at times. That said, the movie has some charm to keep you glued till the end. If a seamless storyline, great music, fantastic slice of life imageries and beautiful women aren't enough for you to have a good time watching movie, may be you should give this a miss.
