Mani Ratnam is one of the very few Indian Directors I respect..His Roja, Nayagan, Geetanjali and the less known Anjali are some of my all time favorites...But this time he has disappointed and How!!
Raavan starts off with a bang and you anticipate more from the master..but it keeps getting worse and finally hits rock bottom albeit a few moments of classic Mani like the climax action piece and Raavan's sister tale...but rest of the stuff is so boring that you cannot believe its a Mani Ratnam movie..the cinematography is one of the best ever seen on Indian cinema.but the rest is a damp squib ..Abhishek tries to huff and puff in a role which is extremely complex.and sadly out of Abhi's league..he is sincere but not fit for this role.....Ash is good in some scenes but overall she fails to make a great impact...there is absolutely no chemistry between her and Abhi..hmmm..all real life couples fail to sizzle on screen...(Aish-Abh , Saif - Kareena, Katrina - Salman)....the first is ridiculously boring and non engaging..what was Mani thinking??The problem here being there is no character development..which is a essential part of good movie-making..think Roja and you still remember Arvind Swamy on the ground trying to save the Indian Flag or pankaj kapoor prodding him to go back to his wife in the climax...where is that human element mani?? None of the characters make a connection barring Abhi's sister...this movie looked more like a re- launch pad to lift Abhi's career..you see Ash-Abhi both on screen for 95% of the movie run time..but you never feel anything for them..unlike Roja where your heart went out for Arvind Swamy when he was beaten by the terrorists or for Madhu when she used to plead with the authorities to save her husband...wheres the connection with the characters in this movie?? NONE..thats because we are dealing with 2 glam stars who are pretty much non actors...(i am sure many people would be offended but its time we face the truth).... Vikram does a decent job with a half baked role given to him..govinda is funny in his brief role...Ravi kisan is good...the second half is fast paced but the irreparable damage had already been done in the first half..the ending doesn't move you or make you think..you just want to go home at that point of time..at least thats what most of the people in the theatre felt when i watched the movie...
Mani is a legendary director and he should stop making movies for Abhishek no matter how much ever pressure/money he gets since he is beginning to seriously dent his great status as a pioneer of Indian cinema..I sincerely pray that he doesn't go the Ram Gopal Verma way....
Ganeshana Madhuve (1990)
this is one of the finest comedies to come out of the kannada film industry in a long time. The story is truly hilarious with brilliant performances from Anantnag,Mukhya mantri chandru, ramesh bhat..The dialogues are very funny...the music is good..editing crisp and cinematography adequate. The first half of the movie is excellent with funny dialogues but the second half drags a little bit.I wish there were more of these movies..clean comedy with hardly any double meaning dialogues..hats off to phani ramachandra for directing one of the best kannada comedies...the entire ganseha series is good with ganeshana maduve being the best of the lot
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
i just got to see napolean dynamite yesterday. It was so boring.no humor, everyones looking bored in the movie.napolean is kinda funny but he doesn't do much except open his mouth awkwardly all the time. His friend pedro is lost all the time looking dazed. This is the case with most of the characters.I don't know if this was done on purpose or what, but still it was not funny.really what was the point of this movie.it only shows a bunch of losers who are spineless characters. Finally with a dance napolean wins the respect of all.thats plain stupid.this movie acts and feels dumb on purpose.there's no life in this movie.it goes on aimleesly without any strong storyline.really boring stuff.
