A Dangerous Man (2009)
Seagal's new movie fails to impress
-Ufortunately even though its a relatively good film,it failed to impress after the highs of DTK and TK.The film does start strongly, and in the positives i have to count Steven's performance as it shows a character and not Seagal himself..He is angry, disappointed, sad and violent and he doesn't hide it..The action was pretty good, some explosions and a lot of shootouts, but the latter were almost unwatchable, due to the frantic editing. The editing also affects the fight scenes, most are shot really close to Steven's face(a 'trend' started by the ever popular Burne movies) making it really hard to understand whats going on and to actually SEE the fight..Thus even though the film does have a satisfying amount of fights, only a few are completely watchable..I think the best and most extensive fight was in the beginning with the Chinese man at the rest stop..The supporting cast is pretty good, and while Byron Mann makes a really convincing villain he is terribly underused, appearing in only a handful of scenes and failing to showcase his martial art skills..The film goes for a much darker tone than The Keeper, which surprisingly does not feel out of place since the story is much darker and brutal than Seagal's previous effort.
Negatives
-Dubbing in 30% of the film -Bad editing that ruins most of the fights, the worse since KS -Villain underused -Seagal only in 60-70% of the film -Boring story
Positives
-Plenty of action scenes -Seagal gives a surprisingly good performance -Lots of bloody action -Polished,and on a darker tone and style than TK -Good supporting cast -Effective villain -More fight scenes than TK -Stunt doubles remain "hidden"(no outrageous/blatant use of them like BOTB or Out Of Reach)
Overall my feelings are kind of mixed about this one..On the one hand it's a straightforward action film, and it doesn't take long for the action to start, also Steven is pretty good in it.But it just didn't really click with me,the editing was awful and i think we could have gotten a much better film with a bit more care..Personally I would rate it at 70%. A satisfying Seagal action movie, but keep your expectations lowered.
Driven to Kill (2009)
Steven makes another DTV comeback
After the post-production mess that was Kill Switch, Seagal needed a decent,DTV action movie. And that's what he delivers in this one.A bloody, brutal revenge story and nothing more. Seagal plays Ruslan,ex-Russian mafia who now writes crime novels. When he returns to the US for his daughter's wedding he is treated with a horryfying surprise. His daughter has been attacked and heavily injured while his ex-wife has been brutally murdered. So Ruslan decides to avenge them and
kill whoever is responsible for their suffering. You know the usual plot that Seagal has been up to for the last 10 years, but there is a new cool twist, the Russian mafia..That gives the advantage to Ruslan to operate outside the law and he fully takes the opportunity.Seagal's Russian accent is indeed quite heavy, it disappears in a few scenes but it is fairly steady throughout the film, while dubbing's not that often. The fight scenes are the best since Pistol Whipped, brutal with no stunt doubles, and done amazingly by Seagal(highlight is a long knife fight in a strip joint).Seagal even runs and chases a thug, something we haven't seen in a long time. The ending is another high point featuring explosions, gun fights and the usual hand to hand combat with the lead villain. The direction is average, the editing less frantic but you still get a lot of shots of Seagal's face in the middle of the fight scenes. But thankfully this time you can actually SEE the action. The supporting cast is OK, didn't find a terrible performance not an amazing one either. You get the girl from Watchmen(Laura Mennel) and the heavy from Indiana Jones 4.So it's not that bad..For a DTV action flick, Driven To Kill is quite good and Seagal's best in a long time..
Pistol Whipped (2008)
Steven Seagal is back!
Steven Seagal has arguably been on the dawn of his action-star career with such films as 'Foreighner' and the awful 'Attack Force'. Fortunately his latest action film is ten steps better than those flops. Steven Seagal's character, Mat, is divorced, gambles and owes tones of money. Then he is hired by an old man to kill off some of his enemies. It doesn't sound very good but it's the best Steven Segal film since 'Exit Wounds'. There are 4-5 small fight scenes. and one that spans to a minute and it is a brief return to the Seagal of the 90's. There is also a well-made car chase, not something very special but a good addition, and lots of shootouts. Seagal does all of his fight scenes and there is no voice dubbing. The direction is also a pleasant surprise and slow-mo is kept to a minimum. Seagal tries to act, but again nothing special, overall a decent cast. The best Seagal film in years, recommended. 7/10
Flight of Fury (2007)
review of flight of fury
flight of fury is an overall decent action flick.Even if it isn't in the level of under siege e.t.c it is still satisfying if you are looking for an action movie.it certainly has its flaws but if you skip them you will have a good time
dubbing:some in the beginning and a line in the end. acting:same old whispering from Seagal the rest of the cast is okay
fights:hand to hand are few and the majority of them is in the end but there are lots with knives, guns and even one with a pipe.the 20 minute climax is the best part in the movie with explosions, fights and airplane battles
stock footage:90% the airplane shots are stock footage and are not handled well, and also Seagal does all of his own stunts
