Crop And Save
Over Her Dead Body (2008)
Going to buy this on DVD for two reasons...
1) Paul Rudd - The guy is always funny, even when the script is lacking and this movie is no exception. His dialogue was witty, it's just a shame the story could've been a whole lot better, but on such a poor premise I don't know how much more the writers could've done anyways.
2) Lake Bell - I had never heard of her before this, since she was mostly a TV actress in the US, but her character was extremely likable, attractive and funny. She showed she can make a good romantic comedy love interest, as she is not only good looking but can actually live up to the comedy part of a "rom-com", unlike most female leads who are just there to look good and can't act at all. I will be checking out her prior and future work to see if she has any dramatic merit as well, but it looks as though she could become pretty big in Hollywood if she develops better taste in the movies she picks.
Also, Eva Longoria Parker was pretty horrible in this, but she had a thankless task with the character she was given. I don't think too many actresses could have done much more with the role, it was just badly written and completely unsympathetic.
The acting basically saved what was a terrible script, premise and movie in general. Lake Bell and Paul Rudd had good chemistry and the movie had a good heart and was really funny in plenty of places, but most of those scenes involved Jason Biggs, Paul Rudd and Lake Bell playing off of one another. Longoria was the odd one out and most scenes involving her were the worst ones of the movie.
I gave this movie a 7 for the acting and the strong lead performances of Bell and Rudd who, had this script focused more on instead of the dead girlfriend, could've made it even better. Maybe it should've been made as a comedy/drama and focused on how Rudd gets over Longoria's death and Bell's journey to help him do it, but as it is, it's not bad by any means and should make a good date movie or rental.
Ghost Lake (2004)
Not bad for what it was....
I watched Ghost Lake many, many months ago and the film has a good plot. The acting was not up to Hollywood standard, as expected, but it has a more realistic feel to it. The actors don't over-exaggerate particular scenes like you would get in a Hollywood movie (be that good or bad, you decide), which makes for a refreshing, if not a little odd, change.
The acting may not have been what I was used to, but there is somewhat of a double twist at the end which I didn't see coming that totally threw me off. This film was probably more effective as a thriller than a horror, as I wasn't so much horrified as I was shocked by the end. I haven't read any other reviews mentioning the twists so I might be the only one who found them important, but nonetheless, they were very well done.
I didn't find the sex scene at the start of the movie necessary for the plot, but I can't complain too much I suppose, although it didn't really need to be there. I understand it was added to emphasise how guilty Rebecca was feeling, but I just didn't think it needed to be shown, or if it was, it didn't need any nudity. It just seemed like it was thrown in to attract male viewers, but all it did was cheapen the movie even more than it was already, being low budget.
The special effects were nothing to speak of, but I didn't go into the film expecting Lord of the Rings quality effects (I wouldn't want great special effects with this style of film, the acting and effects wouldn't have matched). They did their job, but weren't too fancy.
Overall, even though it's very obviously a low budget film and it's very unlikely any of the crew involved in this production will make it big in Hollywood, the film is enjoyable and satisfactory. I was probably biased against the film from the start, being that I'm not a huge fan of horror, but it held my attention from start to finish and provided a decent end result. It could be a big film if picked up by a major studio and remade, although that's unlikely. Watch it if only for the end twists. 6/10
